Task Manager shows a setup.exe called running unexpected process in XP

My computer has been acting strange and when I opened the Task Manager, I noticed (setup.exe) was running. What is (setup.exe)? Is spyware or something that someone can use to hack into computers?

Setup.exe could be for any software installation file. Task Mgr allows to interrupt the process, then search for the file. Make sure that you enable the advanced search feature. Right-click on the file and choose Properties. Click on the Version tab, click on the company in the left pane. That should tell you the original file.

You can also use the search utility for Windows files.

It's a little more complicated that you might have a few running services that you can do without.

Also some programs add services that might not really need to start automatically.

To see these compare these in Start - type in the search box-> find Services at top right click on RUN AS ADMIN as the default Vista as shown here by BlackViper. Ignore and who are disabled (which do not run) or manual (which work only on request) - for any automatic or automatic delayed start you can post them here if you need help to decide if you should run. Some of these can be assigned to the stop and
Manual if the program calling can run them as needed.

BlackViper made also some improvements to default windows services but I wouldn't do those unless you
really understand the full meaning of change a default service. Then use it as a tool to compare.

  • On 64 - bit suddenly systems Task Manager shows several exe * 32 process. Weird. Why?

I have a laptop running Windows 7 64 - bit OS 8 month old HP. I had problems with the backup program, so I contacted the HP support. They have dirtied remote for a few hours (does not solve the problem). A day later I see that almost all of the entries in the window of the Task Manager process ends by * 32. I have never seen that before and I'm afraid that this expression may refer to 32-bit.

The people of HP CS for IE 32 bits allows you to download a program that they need to try to solve the problem, and I fear that they messed up and have screwed something.

Currently, IE9 will open to a blank screen and freeze so I can't uninstall it.

    Help me.  Thank you.  -Laura

The * 32 process mean that you run the 32-bit process on a 64-bit Windows 7. Windows 7 64 bit can run 32 and 64 transparently bit applications. The denotation also helps differentiate 32 64-bit process.

It is also one of the best confirmation that 64-bit Windows is installed.

You can check it out below:

Click Start, right click on computer

    Click on properties

Look under System Type, it will be 32 or 64-bit operating system.

  • Task manager shows use ram go down 2-4 GB at a time

Even when I started just the pc to the top when I go into task manager, the use of the ram will be about 2 GB after about 2 to 5 minutes using the ram will go straight up to about 4 to 6 GB when I don't have to start all programs then later fall up to 2 GB. This happens all of the time I use the computer (ram use jumps up and down without reason everything I do), I MSE running all the time and the pilots is on that I scanned with Malwarebytes/MSE/TDSSKiller and windows is up-to-date (windows 7 Edition home premium x 64).

    Any reason, what would happen?
If you go in the Manager of tasks, and then select process, you can click the memory tab, do the sort Ascending or descending, and that should give you your answer on what is the use of the RAM.

    I hope this helps.

It's not at all because with 4 GB of physical memory used the process using the most memory is dwm.exe with 34 956 K.
Finally fixed that was a service called wmpnetwk.exe which would eat up to 2 + GB RAM all the minutes, I turned off since then.

    Hey Malki,

He run a background process and they need the CPU usage that of normal. Antivirus is running in the background like other tools as well. As far as I know after the installation of recovery the defragmentation tool runs also in the background.

Interesting to know is what problem you have. I mean usually the CPU usage is not important if you can do everything and computer works correctly.

    1. open the Control Panel
    2. click on change or other input methods keyboard
3 click the Formats tab on top
    4. click on Customize Formats settings / extra
    5. click on reset
    6. click apply then OK
    7. restart the computer
Now after restarting try to open the Task Manager and see if helped. This reset solved the same problem for me.

  • Use of the Task Manager physical memory is not not to use processes

I have seen this topic discussed it before, but I did not understand what is happening here.

-J' have one windows server 2008 with 8 GB or ram configured, with the limit set to unlimited and booking made 8 GB.

-When you look in the Task Manager, I see the physical memory to 88% and the bar bed to 7.10 GB.

-Adding all process memory usage, it is only about 2 GB.

-In another thread, that I read that it was because he had a deadline, and hot air balloon began.

-J' I monitor the server via SNMP and have alerted all the time that this server joined more than 90% ram usage.

-The Guest server is correct use of the physical memory Task Manager?

-If it is not, and is caused by the ESX host, how can I fix it to properly monitor the comment server.

    ESX.png

    Windows.png

The question here is how windows works,

You reserve memory and don't have no limits, so there is no balloon showing VMs to appear that they have high memory use when they are not actually in some cases.

Processes that Task Manager displays is not all that is running or being eaten, I know when working with SQL, you have FEAR that can use a ton on memory, but there is no process to show.

Best thing to do is to run RAMMAP a sys internals tool that will show you exactly what is using the memory in windows.
