Test lab: HP DL 580 G5 128 MB RAM (storage DAS)

Can someone help us here with suggestions on the best way, we set up our storage on our new test laboratory?

We have the following piece of hardware...

HP DL 380 G5

8 x 30 GB SAS 10 k disks

128 MB OF RAM

4 x Quad Core 2.93 mhz

Controller Smart P400

We think of a disk configuration of...

RAID 1 + 0 for o/s and some of the CPS VM

RAID 5 for the remaining drive to welcome all other machines virtual (Mostly w2k3)

I know that a higher technical controller would be nice, but we have not available.

I thought of RAID 6 for the virtual machine, but I am worried about the perfomance.

Its a test lab that will be used for functional testing and will not see a huge amount of charge.

Everyone has views on how we can configure the DAS.

If you consider any useful comment please assign points :)

  • Preparation for VCP5-DV test lab

    Hi all. I took the course "VMware vSphere: install, configure, manage ' back in May and I want to prepare for the exam by creating a test lab." We do not really have ESXi installation from scratch and I understand that the free version has limited functionality.

    I have 3 HP DL380 G5 servers with storage bound locally, that I could use in any laboratory test. I can probably get a loan from a layer 3 switch.

    I'm looking to get advice get it all and in executing, install ESXi, create the cluster, configure the network (VLAN), HA, vMotion test etc.

    Where to start?

    VMware.com eval and binaries for ESXi and vCenter

    If you have access to Windows 2008 R2 installation you can use it to AD, DNS, NTP, NFS and iSCSI for 30 days and to have access to the shared storage

    Then use the CIM laboratory book to build a similar environment to play with and spend in the laboratories.  Search online blog posts that go through the VCP5 action plan and test all components.

    A switch from BestBuy $25 is all you need really - to test VLAN / PVLAN just ensure that virtual machines are on the same host.

    You can run ESX and ESXi in machines virtual VMware Workstation (or VMware Server), as well as a machine virtual Windows running vCenter Server with SQL Express and a virtual machine running a like OpenFiler or FreeNAS for you give a few storage shared virtual.

    Do a Google search for vsphere lab workstation and you will find many articles from the blog of people who did it-I run a laboratory vSphere like this myself on my work laptop.

    128 GB flash storage is sufficient for most computers laptops home

    It is more than enough for me, but I doubt that it is for the most part. One thing you can do is to see how much space you use on your current computer.

    Did you mean 128 GB of storage instead of memory, because it is very little, too little in my opinion.

  • MacBook Pro 128 GB SSD storage

    What can I expect from the 128 GB ssd storage in terms of size of the OS and Microsoft office installed as well as software, very simple that I need for my daily use. will it be enough, or should I go for the 256 GB. On the other hand is the pro storage (model 2015) macbook upgrade possible (future upgrade of storage higher)?

    If you store large amounts of data, it is preferable to use an SSD with a different drive.

    the SSD should contain your OS applications and kernel, but if you are working with smaller text documents, spreadsheets and PowerPoints on the SSD storage do not have a lot to worry about and you can use data optimally with the speed that the SSD offers on HARD drive.

    If you work with raw files of creative cloud, hi-res photography, video, Audio recording, a lot of family photos or a great iTunes collection consider a second disc more to keep these files on your SSD.

    You can install an SSD that fits, but more large size disks are replacements for what you put there so you cannot pass a 128 'largest capacity SSD' than it is currently, you must purchase a 256 or 512 or 1 to and remove your 128 system.

  • How to set an MTU of 1600 for test Lab at home for the NSX on Vmware workstation

    Hello.

    I'll set up a laboratory at home to build a laboratory to the NSX. I am running 3 on VMware Workstation 11 Esxi hosts. All three hosts of esxi run each 4 Ethernet adapters on them.

    To configure installation VXlan for my lab at home, I have modified the virtual machine's .vmx file and changed the vmxnet3 device and it works.

    Ethernet1. ConnectionType = "custom".

    Ethernet1.virtualDev = "e1000".

    Ethernet1.wakeOnPcktRcv = "FALSE".

    Ethernet1. AddressType = 'generated '.

    ethernet2. Present = 'TRUE '.

    ethernet2.VNET = "VMnet1.

    ethernet2. ConnectionType = "custom".

    ethernet2.virtualDev = "vmxnet3" - change to vmxnet3

    Adapter type VMxnet3 only is not supported for VMware workstation and also one of my hosts broke down several times with the low error message in the log file.

    Can someone guide me how to set up a lab NSX on VMware workstation and use 1600 MTU for VXlan traffic. Any help is very appreciated.

    Hi all

    I managed to solve this problem by separating the storage traffic to a different vswitch and the traffic to a different VDS NSX.

  • Build test lab

    Hello

    I currently have a server VMware ESXi 5.1 home with an Intel Core i7 - 3770S (65 watts) CPU with two network adapters.  The server runs at 28 idle watts (2 SSDS) which is very effective (machine 24/7).  I also have access to iSCSi, NFS, etc..

    I intend to add a second host to make more tests and to learn before I break things at work.  I'm looking at two options.  To build another host exactly as the current computer, or go with two machines additional NUC for a smaller footprint.

    Are there limits as to have a NETWORK adapter on a host computer?  None of the other things I should be aware of?  I read online before you post :).

    Thank you

    TT

    If used only for a lab environment there is no problems with the use of a single NETWORK card - I think the challenges you will face is if ESXi 5 will have the drivers to support hardware in the NECK - I'd build a machine identical to what you already have - this way you will be able to test with all features of vSphere including vMotion and DRS.

  • Using WS VMware ESXi test Lab

    I try to use VMware WS 8.0.4 as the basis for a laboratory test of ESXi.  I have a card mother MSI A75MA-G55 with 16 GB of RAM and processor Quad-Core AMD A8-3850.  I installed VMware WS 8.0.4 on 64-bit OS Windows 8 and then installed ESXi as a guest called Host1.  I could then install Windows 8 x 64 on the top of the Host1.  I then installed a second ESXi host called Host2 and then tried to install a client Windows 8 x 64 above it.  When I tried to start the client, I got the error "this virtual machine is configured for 64-bit operating systems.  However, the 64-bit mode is not possible.  translation of binary 64 bit is not supported in a VM. "He then referred me to 152 KB.  I then tried to install the same Windows on Host1 guest (I have shared iSCSI storage) and installed OK.  I allocated 5 GB of RAM for each ESXi host.

    I have nothing different betweent the installation of the first and the second ESXi host.  I don't see why the second ESXi host will not support 64-bit operation.  What Miss me?

    Also is there setting for WS 8 or ESXi hosts advice when running in this configuration?

    Thank you

Is the checkbox, you're referring to something new for Workstation 8.0.4?

    It was introduced with Workstation 8.0.  It is only available for hardware virtual 8 VMs.  By default, all virtual machines created in Workstation 8 are material virtual version 8.  If you have an older VM, you can move the VM by VM-> manage-> change Hardware Compatibility.  If you select compatibility with Workstation 8.0, the box should appear on the processor tab.

It has a quad core processor, but can only handle a single hard drive. I wanted to use this machine as shared storage. I seem to keep problems when installing FreeNAS. I want to use Openfiler because it can act as an iSCSI SAN, but it does not have USB start I guess removes the possibility of using the internal hard drive as the space.

    All virtualized host ESX to ESX host and used the iSCSI SAN that ESX accommodation guests use in the host ESX VM test? I really don't have any money to spend on equipment. Any help will be appreciated.

  • Upgrade test lab to U4 - lost access to the premises of SATA storage

    Wonder if anyone has seen this when upgrading ESX of U3 to U4.  My laboratory ESX servers are based on the motherboards desktop, the ASUS P5E-VMDO (processors quad core, 8 GB RAM).  All the way up to and including the 3 update, installing ESX recognized the SATA controllers on board and I was able to use the local VMFS partitions.  In fact, this is where I had installed my Lefthand Networks VSA SRM test and demo-ing.  The upgrade to U4 has apparently updated drivers SATA for ESX and server does not see the SATA controllers on board.  The laboratory is still quite functional due to the Openfiler SAN I, but I can choose to downgrade to U3 ESX hosts, unless I can find a solution, so I can always access the local storage.

    Anyone got tips?

    Assuming that you do not use a RAID function on board with your SATA, see if your system BIOS has an option to portray the ICH9 controller as something else - achi if it is avaiable or portray SATA in IDE, if it's available and see if ESX 3.5 Update 4 it resumes after a reboot. You'll want to write to its original position first before making changes if you can put if none of this works.

  • Need help with network Test lab configuration

    I have the Setup VLANS on Cisco switch (4506) and I put aside in ESX (3.5) in its own switch port, but I'm not able to get the systems on this switch to connect.  They seem not to see each other even if they are on the same subnet and the same vlan.  Ideas?

    Looks like it's maybe a configuration problem of VLAN.  On the Cisco switch is the port connected to the network test card NETWORK set up as a trunk port?  If you want to make sure it has 400 VLAN assigned to the trunk.  If it is not defined as a trunk port, you must remove the tag VLAN from your virtual switch.  If the port of Cisco is not defined as a trunk, then the Cisco switch sends tags VLAN to the vSwitch and the vSwitch is looking for packets marked as 400 and not something else by the way to the virtual machine.  Either the trunk or the vSwitch VLAN parameter will be changed to solve the communication.

    If the end goal is to have several VIRTUAL networks appear on network vSwitch test then I'd go the route set port of Cisco to the trunk.  If you just want a VLAN to appear on the vSwitch test then I would keep the port Cisco defined how it is assigned to 400 VLANS and delete reference VLAN of the vSwitch.

    Hope this helps, please give points if it was useful.
