Hello Atelier42, this usually indicates that you have a hard disk failure.

I would like to back up my data as soon as possible, just in case the hard drive breaks down actually.

You must also make sure that you have the HP Recovery restore set for your system recovery disc in case you do not want to replace the hard drive.

With this restore HP Recovery disk set, you could replace a defective hard drive and use this disk set to your HP system back as it was when shipped. Then, you could put your data saved on your system.

No, if it times out. If you want to check your hard disk, run the diagnostics Dell drivers and Utilities disc.

Hello saltyern, this failure usually reports at the beginning of hard drive failure. I backup my data as soon as possible and consider replacing the hard drive as soon as possible.

You must have either already predict a HP Recovery disk set, restore your system which can be used to restore the software you need to replace the original hard drive.

The above is an excerpt from the article below:

I strongly suggest you to immediately perform a backup of all your personal files, data, and anything else that is important for you to external media (an external IMO is better but you can also use CD/DVD or a USB flash drive) until the hard drive breaks down.

  • SMART short self-test - on the second hard drive

    HP Pavilion Elite e9270t - 3 yrs old, Win7.

Became the error SMART self-test short the original drive so I installed a replacement and transferred files.

I get the same error on the second h/d. I have my doubts that the second disk is having the exact same error and wonder if the s/w test is actually the problem.

It could very well be the connectors that gives you the question instead of the HARD drive itself. I would run the HARD drive test in BIOS instead of the short test.

    Try this:

    1. Plug the AC adapter into the computer if it is not already connected.
    2. Turn off the computer and wait five seconds.
    3. Press the power button to start the computer and repeatedly press the F10 key to enter the BIOS Setup menu.
    4. Use the right arrow or left arrow keys to navigate the menu selection to find the Auto test primary hard drive option. Depending on your BIOS, it is under diagnoses or tools.
    5. Select self-test primary hard drive, and then press the Enter key to start the test.

Figure 1: Example of a primary hard disk self test screen

The hard drive self test performs a Quick Test , followed by a complete Test. During each test, the window displays a status bar and a scheduled for completion

Let me know the results of this test.

I also went in the BIOS BOOT MENU by pressing F12 at startup and ran diagnostics that seemed to have said everything going, however I saw a mistake, faliure in its process that was too fast for me to write the error.

In a nutshell, my thought is that my hard drive has failed / is corrupted or is about to fail.

My simple question is, do I need a new hard drive with the information I've provided?

    Thank you very much!

It is likely that you will need to replace the hard drive.  To confirm, press F12 at startup, enter the Dell diagnostics.  Run an extended hard drive test.

If the system is under warranty, logs the error and contact Dell for a replacement drive.

If the system is out of warranty, any standard 3.5 "SATA drive will work as a replacement.

  • Hard drive failure: targeted read Test failed, SMART short self test FAILED

Suddenly, I get this popup to My Dell saying that my computer has failed two important tests and the hard disk failure is imminent. It scared me so much I almost fell of my computer Chair, so I came here to help... my computer is a Dell Inspiron 15R 2012 5520 and error codes are:

I saw the other topics on this, but just in case, I wanted to do this one. I'm really afraid that all my files will be lost, because I don't have anywhere to store up to. I tried the cloud, but my connection is not good enough and it is really slow and sometimes just will not work. Also, sometimes when I press my ear to the laptop, I hear a soft grinding, which I guess was the failed hard drive. I don't think I've heard that noise before, but he could have been there since I bought the laptop.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

UPDATE: I ran CHKDSK and it only took a few seconds for him to know that my hard drive is fine, although my Dell seems to think otherwise. What should I trust?

You will need to replace the hard drive failed, followed by reinstalling windows.

If there is a warranty from Dell, contact Dell technical support for replacement drive, no guarantee, you will need to purchase a laptop SATA, 9.5 MM x 2.5 "hard drive.

With regard to the recovery of the data files and folders, you can try attaching the failed hard drive to another system that works using a similar to THIS USB adapter and see if you can transfer files and folders.

Applications and programs need to be reinstalled from their records, or downloaded from the website of the Publisher.
