Hi jjackbcop,
Thanks for posting in the Microsoft Community.
I understand that you are facing the issue with windows updates offer several times over and over again.
Method 1:
I suggest you perform the clean boot and check.
Place the computer in a clean boot state, then check if it helps. You can start Windows by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This type of boot is known as a "clean boot". A clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts.

http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/310353
Note: After completing the steps in the clean boot troubleshooting, follow these steps to configure Windows to use a Normal startup of the link report section to return the computer to a Normal startup mode.
After the clean boot used to resolve the problem, you can follow these steps to configure Windows XP to start normally.
(a) click Start, run.
(b) type msconfig and click OK.
(c) the System Configuration Utility dialog box appears.
(d) click the general tab, click Normal Startup - load all services and device drivers and then click OK.
(e) when you are prompted, click on restart to restart the computer.

The same updates keep installation again and again.
Every time that the computer shuts down, the same updates keep installation again and again. They also create a new folder on drive C named as numbers only with the 2 files in each directory. These are difficult to remove. Previous updates of the same number succeeded. It is a bit of a pain!

Why do I get the same update is keep coming for updating this kb 2538242 service pack 1 update
Thank you roy
This is because the update has failed.
It is a Ko http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2530477
But you really need to specify the err code in Windows Update > history for the update has failed.
If your PC is a large manufacturer, for example Dell/HP, you must make sure your drivers are updated since the support to the site

Repeatedly offered the same update
Windows Update keeps trying to install the same update (KB981852) again and again. Whenever update is a new update, downloads and installs it. He says that the update has been successfully installed. When the dialog box is closed, a new dialog box appears and wants to download the same update. This is repeated 10 times and I can't seem to stop trying to install this update.
First of all, it's a little strange that answer appears PA bear prior to a post submitted more than 12 hours. before him. Also, it is strange that I never was warned of his assignment until I was informed that it was marked as a response, so I never had the opportunity to react before it has been marked as an answer.
My bad for not specifying not what operating system it has produced, but a quick search on Google for the update number of, whowas in my post, would have revealed that this is a update of security for Windows XP (mine is 32-bit). The machine is the free version of Comcast of Norton Security Suite installed and is therefore always up to date. Norton manages spyware blocking (although the Defender is much less than it is in any case). And of course, Norton provides the firewall (although I had to manually turn off the Windows Firewall three times after installing Norton; it was before installing the update above). It was a totally clean, after being shaped and test of surface, installed Windows XP Home OEM from an installation disc (I am a member of the Microsoft Partner Network). There are three other machines Windows XP here (2 with Pro) and the other with the House, all the 32 bits that had recently reinstalled OS which has not experienced this problem when the same update has been installed on them and all had Comcast of Norton installed before the offered update version. It's news to me that there is a toll free number to get free assistance for the security updates, it seems to be a well-kept secret, that I can find no mention of this inyour research support, on or off the Microsoft Web site.
Yet, none of the foregoing is an answer to my question, as seems to be preferred on the Microsoft Forums, unless it is summarily assumed that the applicant is a fool, then all the possible solutionsobvious are specified, even when the applicant stated that he had tried these thingsbefore asking for help.
In all cases, the problem seems to have been resolved by simply saying to Windows Update to stop advising me of the update.

Windows Update, offering the same updates
Hello
I am running Windows Vista Home premium 64-bitI did a factory of my computer reset today and have been involved in the update of windows for some time now.I am facing two problems with windows update:1 - the first is that Windows update keeps giving me the same important updates 3 over and over-Internet Explorer 8 for Windows Vista for x 64 systems-Update for Windows Vista for x 64-based systems (KB971029)-Windows Search 4.0 for windows Vista x 64-based Systems (KB940157)It has been the installation of the updates successfully and I get the green icon in windows update, but after 'check updates', I always get the same updates.
I tried to pass by the troubleshooting suggested to this page on renaming the folder C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution, but with no result... http://answers.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows/Forum/windows_other-windows_update/Windows-Vista-keeps-wanting-to-install-the-same/4ca85f08-73e3-4A4B-B1FF-f3747fcf945e2. via the properties of my computer, I see that I have Service Pack 1Given that windows update will not provide Service Pack 2, I downloaded manually via the Download Center and tried to install it. but I get a message saying that the Service Pack 1 is installed.
Please help me and thanks in advance. Thanks for your reply,
However, the computer has a hardware problem that required me to reformat the first time is when the issue of the update happened, I had to solve the problem and again the reformat...I have corrected the problem and that's goodThanks again and sorry for the inconvenience.
