The sticker on my laptop product key is worn, but I can still do a number above the code bar. Can I still get my product key?

I have an old laptop that took Vista Home Basic (32 bit) and I need to reinstall Vista but the sticker on the laptop is slightly worn I can't see the product key. There are other numbers, I can make out on the sticker, however. What I need to know, is if it's possible for me to get the product key? Also, I might also want to install XP SP3 instead, because it uses less resources, and I heard that you can use the Vista key to activate XP, I'd be able to do?
