  Right-click on the taskbar where there is no icons.  Choose Start the Task Manager.  On the Applications tab.  You can selectively close what ever is open in this window.  Select the item, click end task.

  If you cannot start the Task Manager, you may be stuck.  This leads to a bad alternative that risk.  Close the hard way.  To do this, hold IT in until the machine stops.  Of course you will lose everything you have not saved.

  To see if this is a problem with the key "x" compared to a problem with the order close the tab, you could try to close tabs by using these methods to see if one of them works:

  • CTRL + w (close the current tab)
  • Click the tab > close tab

  Preferences for Save & Quit the warning message was put by default to false in current versions of Firefox 4 beta (bug 592822 - Remove exit warning dialog).

  You can set the preferences of warning on the subject: config page to true via the context menu or toggle with a double click of the left.
