Reset the text tool to see if that solves it. In older versions of the program, look for a small arrow at the top left, on the tool options bar. Click on & reset. On the newer versions, look for a box with lines inside on the right on the options bar. Click on & reset.

If that fixed it, reset the default preferences. In more recent versions, go to Edition > Preferences > General and looking for this:
