Thunderbird attempts to use Java to open attachments in pdf.

I have the add-on for Adobe Reader in Thunderbird. I also checked to use the file extension to open the attachment. But whenever I try to open a .pdf attachment, TBird tries to open it as a Java file. The only way I can open a pdf attachment is to use Internet Explorer.

I am not ware of any player from adobe for Thunderbird addon. There is a plugin for Adobe Reader for use with the Firefox browser.

Adobe Reader is a free software to view and print PDF documents.
It includes a plugin for browser Adobe Acrobat to view PDF documents in Firefox and other Web browsers.

Tools > Options > Annexes > Incoming tab

Under 'Content Type' you see:

  • «Adobe Acrobat document (application/pdf: .pdf)»

is what action set?

  • Click the set Action to see a drop down menu and select Adobe Reader
  • Click Ok to save the changes.

If it does not appear:

  • In Thunderbird,.
  • Select the e-mail with attachment pdf
  • Right-click on the attachment and choose open.
  • A small window will open asking what to do with the file.
  • Choose "Open with" and select "Adobe Reader"
  • Select this option to "do this automatically for files like this in the future"
  • Click OK

  • I can't see/open attachments unless I use the option 'display in classic player '. It's very awkward. Any ideas on how to fix? Version 31.3.0

I use Thunderbird (ver. 31.3.0) for multiple accounts on my main account and e-mail only, he rarely shows the attachments in the mail. There was a button to click an 'overview', 'open' or 'save' (option "Preview" is only for attachments in pdf). This bar menus all disappeared. But only on my main account, other accounts work fine. The only way I found to be able to get to the attachment is to use the "view" using the classic player Then I have to click on the attachment and it downloads and it opens. I would get the options without having to do all the extra clicks to get to the attachments.

    Thank you!

Go to: all programs, then select Microsoft Mail.

Then the attachments will be opened.

It worked for me, it's worth a try.

  • Do not open attachments MATLAB in TextEdit

I understand how to set type on a Mac applications. However, there is a problem.

When I receive an email with a ".m" (MATLAB) file, it should open in TextEdit (on a Mac) because this is the app that I put on my machine. I also put types strangers and plain text to open with TextEdit. But Thunderbird opens a copy of the message in another window and includes the ".m" as an attachment file. He seems unaware that the default is set to TextEdit.

If you open Preferences(or AppMenu/Options/Options)/room detached/Incoming, there's an entry for ".m" content type files for this? If so, delete it by clicking on the drop-down Action, OK, restart TB, double click on (open) a ".m" attachment and set up the application by default for files ".m"; If TextEdit does not appear, click on the dropdown menu 'Open with', other... and locate the TextEdit program.

On my Windows 7 system, the default text editor is already available as a default program to open attachments ".m", and the attachment is "inline" displayed in plain text.

  • cannot open attachments with my firefox. My wife can with IE

with firefox I can't open attachments in my email. I was send these emails to the email of my wife. She's with internet explore by yahoo by AT & t and then I did no harm to open on his email.

Hello jrhjmh, you are a user of yahoo mail and it works when you go to yahoo mail via this link? : https://mail.yahoo.com/

    Reference: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/971042

I don't know as to what exactly is happening, but it seems that yahoo has changed something on their side makes some old dysfunctional urls/servers (you can now use those because you have them bookmarked before or through your story)-at a number of other users have reported that...

so using the generic address https://mail.yahoo.com/ as a bookmark must lead you to the current url & work.

  • I can't open attachments Yahoo mail, but can in Internet Explorer. Tried all of the suggested fixes and nothing works.

I tried all that on the previous thread for the same problem and I can not open attachments. I have no problem with attachments in Internet Explorer. It looks like a problem of FireFox for me.

Whuch suggestions did you try? Here are two recent threads, I found:

    • / issues/978924 Cannot open the pdf attachment in Yahoo Mail. Worked in 25.0 not 25.0.1. Still works with IE.

Have you tried /questions/977835? page = 2 #answer-506091 (change the parameters of 'Complete' to 'Basic')?

Are you accessing Yahoo Mail directly from https://mail.yahoo.com/ instead of via a bookmark? Edit: I see already suggested this and linked to another thread, philipp/issues/971042

  • Cannot open attachments in firefox. OK in IE and iPhone and outlook

When using firefox for the email, I'm now unable to open attachments. Happened over the last week, before that, it was fine and I have not changed any settings (that I know).

I tried all the usual stuff of restart and looked at the settings as much as possible, but nothing jumps.

Email attachments even open fine in outlook, since my iphone and in IE, but I prefer the firefox because I used to use it for so long now. In addition, old attachments that I opened in the past won't open.

Never had any problems before with opening of attachments. All programs are affected - word, excel, pdf, etc.

    Thanks - Jacki

  • Cannot open attachments in my Inbox

Why I can't open attachments in my inbox, accept unknown senders, use the up or down arrows to read emails. I continue to have returned to the home page?

The forum is to post your comments on the web site of Microsoft Answers, only not to ask questions e-mail.

Since you don't mention which e-mail service you use, or you mention what application you use to access this service (although I suspect it is a web browser based on your mention of 'home page'), I am at a loss to suggest the ideal forum for your post.

If you are using Hotmail as your e-mail service, then ask in the center of Windows Live Hotmail Portalsolutions.  If, however, you think that the problem is related to your web browser and you are using Internet Explorer, these forums can be found starting here: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/ie.  Be sure to choose the forum specific to your version of Internet Explorer.  If you see error messages when you do whatever it is you do, please include the full text of this error in your new post.

  • Windows Vista Home Edition suddenly not open attachments. How can this be corrected?

I can't open attachments in the email in the "MAIL" program in Vista Home Premium

    Hello, tubifex

Please use the Forum for answers!

I'm moving your post on the forum of programs.

What kind of attachments you are trying to open?
What is the exact error message you get?
Have you installed any programs or updates before this has stopped working?

Are you able to open the offending file type in Windows directly?

If this started recently, you can try to do a system restore. This will restore the filesystem to a previous point in time. Go to start, all programs, accessories, System Tools, open system restore and choose a date before the problem started.

We can't wait to hear back on your part.
