Time Machine can't find my Airport Extreme disk

I have a 3 TB Airport Extreme connected via USB to my iMac.  iMac is El Capitan (10.11.6) running my iMac is a mid-2007.  When I try to set up Time Machine to back up on the AE, it does not offer me EI in option for a backup drive.  In fact, when I look on the Finder, I don't see not EI there either.  What's wrong?

The USB port on an AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule of airport is here to add an additional hard drive for storing data... or... a compatible USB printer.

The USB port can be used to connect a Mac or any other computer.

Instead, your Mac connects to the airport using the wireless or if you want a wired connection, it's via an Ethernet cable.

AirPort Extreme is not an internal hard drive at all, so you could say you have a 3 TB Time Capsule airport, which does not have an internal hard drive.  Please specify if you have additional questions.

That's kind of how count you...

But if your AE running 7.6.4 firmware it is Wireless N...

A look at the base of the number. It is on the first line of molded rubber or paper label. A1408 is Gen5.

Apple does not support the time machine is a model AE before last Gen6. A lot of people use it, but it can be unreliable... people have a different experience. Just to note that it is not taken in charge and reliability might be good bad or anywhere between the two... Ask yourself how useful is a backup that is not reliable.

I use OS x captain and time machine can't see my passport.  It is a new issue as it worked yesterday.  Is it possible to add a link to it?

The WD passport seems to be very reliable. Or with TM.

I see several complaints here with this kind of question. Try connecting to a different USB port. I guess it is plugged directly into your computer?

  • Time Machine can't see NAS to format / partitioned in El Capitan

We have two MacBook Pro and 4 car TB WD MyBook attached to our wireless router. This disk is partitioned and used for Time Machine backups. We did not have problems with this configuration, up to yesterday, that we decided to format the disk and repartition it. We did it with my MacBook Pro which is running El Capitan (10.11.3) and the newer disk utility program. I plugged the drive locally on the laptop and he came back and said that through fine form/partitioning layout. However, I moved to the router as a NAS and went to setup Time Machine... Time Machine could not see the player. I could map the drive and write to her through 'connect to server... ". "without any problem. Even tried the thing to "map the drive on the desktop" to make it appear on the list of drives available in Time Machine. Nothing worked! I thought something may had been bad installation, or gone bad, partitioning and started... always the same results. The third time, I decided to use MacBook Pro my wife who still works Yosemite with the old "Disk Utility" program on this subject. I went through and formatted/partitioned it the same as before. However, when I hooked up like the SIN this time and the mapped drive he appeared right on Time Machine just as it should have the first time.

Is there a problem with Time Machine, find readers NAS to format / partitioned in El Capitan? Is there a setting that needs to be changed in the new "Disk Utility" program to make it work? I'm a bit of a loss here...

The router cannot possibly recognize a drive formatted by OS X. It uses an operating system that is totally foreign.

A device third-party network attached storage (NAS) or a router is unsuitable for use with Time Machine, especially if it's your only backup. I know that's not what you want to hear. I know that Time Machine accepts the device as a backup destination. I know that the manufacturer says the device will work with Time Machine, and I also know that it usually seems to work. Except when you are trying to restore and find that you can't.

Apple has published a specification for network devices that works with Time Machine. No third party provider, AFAIK, does meet this specification. They all use the application of Netatalk incomplete, obsolete Apple Filing Protocol.

Apple does not endorse any device third-party network for use with Time Machine. See this support article.

Network backup, use as destination an Apple Time Capsule or an external storage device connected to another Mac or a 802.11ac AirPort base station. Only 802.11ac base stations support time Machine, not older model.

Otherwise, use Time Machine at all. There are other ways to save, although none of them are nowhere near as effective or as well integrated with OS X. I don't have a specific recommendation.

If you are determined to continue to use the device with Time Machine, your only remedy for any resulting problem is the manufacturer (who will blame Apple, neither you nor anyone else but herself.)

  • Time Capsule will not extend the Airport Extreme network

My airport extreme (do not know what version... can't even find it in the system report) offers a WiFi modem. I have a Time Capsule 4 G which extends the network. This works well for a few years now. Suddenly, the CAP began flashing yellow. Time capsule said Airport utility cannot extend the network and I should make sure the password is correct, that it is in the signal of a network, etc. I went through the settings of the time capsule by ensuring that passwords are correct. It is certainly within the range of the signal of the airport extreme (they are both in the same place as always... Besides, I put my iPhone next to the time capsule and I get a signal strong). I tried a hard reset of the time capsule. Of course, this does not work.

Time Capsule seems to be communicating with the computer very well. I can access it via the Airport utility and reboot. I can access the data on its disk backup. Airport Extreme is to give a signal of good wi - fi connection. I'm still able to pick it up with my computer (even if my computer is far more than the time capsule).

Someone has an idea of what's going on?

Given that the Capsule does not correctly connect unless everything is OK with the AirPort Extreme... I suggest that you turn off the time Capsule for now and check that everything works correctly on the AirPort Extreme.

My airport extreme (do not know what version... can't even find it in the system report)

You say that the AirPort Extreme does not appear when you open AirPort Utility?

If so, press and hold the option on your Mac key while you double-click on the image of the AirPort Extreme.

Model of the AirPort Extreme, you will appear at the top of the summary page. What is it?

Near the bottom of the summary page, check to see if there is a parameter that is displayed for the State.  If there is, what is the message next to status?

  • How can I configure my Airport Extreme in Bridge mode (use the 3rd party router)?

    Data sheet:

    Airport Extreme - v 7.7.7

    Luma Surround Wifi 8

I recently bought a wifi (luminance) surround system.  It comes with 3 routers that you place around your home.  Unfortunately I still have stains died in my house I'm looking to add my Airport Extreme (AE) to Luma network.  Is it as simple as plug the AE to the network (via Ethernet) and the bridge mode selection in the configuration of EI?

I can see the AE of my iMac, and it is green.  How do you know that actually extend the wifi of my router Luma range?

I searched the forum and all messages dealing with this are several years old.

    Thanks for your time...

Basically, you want to create a mobile network with your Luma and AirPort Extreme routers. As you said, the extreme would need to be connected to the luminance by Ethernet and reconfigured as a bridge.

In addition, the following are also required on the extreme:

    • Wireless mode: create a wireless network
    • The network name must be the same as that used by the Luma.
    • The type of wireless security and the password must match that of the luminance as well.

To 'know' that the extreme extends the network of Luma, simply consult the BSSID value in the drop-down of OS X Wi - Fi. It must match the ID of the airport on your base station. Note: You must hold down the option key before clicking on the icon of the free Wi - Fi connection.

  • Time Machine can't see the 2nd Logical Volume

    I have a RN104, there 4x3TB disks in there, configured in 2xRAID 1 volumes.

The 2nd Volume has recently added so that I can activate and use Time Machine for backups of my Mac.

That's the problem, when I start to set up Time Machine, it cannot see the remaining space in the 1st volume, I can't find a way to set up Time Machine to see or use the available space of the volume, I have installed specifically for Time Machine backups.

    All the thoughts/views/answers?

    Kind regards

    Glenn.

    Hello Thresherinc,

The /data/home/USER/.timemachine is where Time Machine stores data, this folder is always the default value / 1 volume of the NAS and can never be moved.

    Kind regards

  • Can I use an AirPort Extreme to add wifi to wired devices?

Essentially, I would use an AirPort Extreme as a wifi adapter WITHOUT using it as wireless access point. I really just want to access my wireless internet and distribute the connection via Ethernet.

For more context, I have a time capsule airport connected to my modem fiber. Time capsule does a great job of the town house with wifi coverage. However, I have a couple of components in my home theater, who are not able WiFi (DVD player, older game system, etc.). I got to have an AirPort Extreme, so my hope is to use an Internet for these components. I would have preferred that she not also "extend" the wireless network and contract my all along (I know this isn't the end of the world, I just useless expansion of the range so there is no reason for me to enter the equation or more wifi signals bouncing around the House).

I searched a bit and encoder table extend network via wifi or the creation of a network of travelling, but I have not found a way to have the extreme put in place to receive the rebroadcasting wifi without her signal. It's something I can do?  In the circumstances, any other suggestions for setting this up that doesn't involve running one cable Ethernet or the purchase of additional equipment?

    Thanks in advance!

I would use an AirPort Extreme as a wifi adapter WITHOUT using it as wireless access point. I really just want to access my wireless internet and distribute the connection via Ethernet.

This would work... IF... the AirPort Extreme has been implemented to extend wireless network provided another router from Apple. Which would mean that the AirPort Extreme also would act as a point of access Wi - Fi.

It does NOT at all if you try to connect to a third-party router wireless AirPort Extreme wirelessly.

Ironically, an AirPort Express can be configured to do exactly what you want using either a router from Apple or a third-party router as the "primary" router If two ports Ethernet on the Express are too few in number, you can add an Ethernet switch to create more connections.

  • Time machine can not read my previous record

I have reinstalled mac system and erase hard drive 3 weeks ago, but I didn't completely copy all of the files of music, so when I use time machine to restore it save only sometime after I reinstalled my mac.

I wonder how I will get my previous record? What is the problem of the authority, if time machine won't let me read the previous record?

someone knows how to fix this?

Should have immediately restored the files... It will now make a mess.

I assume that all the music files means your iTunes library... If not, what do you mean?

Did you use the same name for Mac as it did on the old installation?

You did backup on top of the existing backup or did you start a new backup.

If you started a new backup, you can migrate files... open the utility Directory migration wizard and select the previous backup...

However, there are questions if you used the same user name that you currently have... Tell me if you use the same computer name or the same username.

  • I get my internet through a Repeater.  There is a POE carrier then online, then a router adapter yet.   Can I use an Airport Extreme with POE to improve my WiFi range?

I live in Baja California Surinamese no cable.  You want to improve WiFi.  Not sure how to interact with a POE.  Tried to set up the airport without a bit of luck.  Appreciate some feedback.

If the connection between the POE (Power over Ethernet) device and the AirPort Extreme is a wireless, then you will not be able to extend the network Wi - Fi of the OCB in the extreme. This is possible with an another AirPort base station.

In addition, only a particular model of the base station AirPort Extreme POE supported wired connections. It was discontinued in 2007 and is model # A1034.

  • Can I connect my Airport Extreme base station via an ethernet cable to a counter of locus?

Can I use my Airport Express (802.11n Wi - Fi) to connect with an ethernet cable, a locus counter that is used with a solar panel inverter?  Currently I use the hotspot to connect two different Mac computers and an Ipad.  Sungevity, Setup, told me that the signal must go in a direction of my locus meter satellite modem.  Sungevity also told me that if I can hard wire any device (such as a computer) directly from my Airport, I should also be able to do the same with the meter of locus.  Has anyone tried this before?

    Thank you.

    North Country Boy

What is the AirPort Express you have?

As you test, turn off the WiFi on a computer and then connect the computer to the local network <-->port on the AirPort Express using an Ethernet cable to see if the computer can get a good connection Internet in this way?

If he CAN... and if the people of support for your solar panels have provided the correct information... then the meter will work.

  • Time Machine Mens on the size of my disk :(

I have an external hard drive connected to a MacMini running OSX server, the most recent version. This drive has a directory which is Time Machine turned on. My MacBook Pro has been save to that drive for-like-ever. A couple of years.

A month ago, I needed a USB3 cable for something then I yanked. Today, I plugged it back to start back up again. In the meantime, however, I got a new MacBook Pro. No biggie. I thought that I have would inherit just backups. Then...

    (1) connected to the backup and asked if I wanted to inherit. I said yes. He said: "the backup disk should 371,58 GB for backup, but only 239,55 GB are available."

    (2) so, I figure there is a config conflicted, so why not not start all over again. I deleted the old backup. Reconnected. "The backup disk should 371,58 GB for backup, but only 239,55 GB are available." It seemed odd that the number is the same since I had deleted a huge thing. In addition, drive a 1.42 T space to this topic. What?

    (3) I deleted new dmg on the backup drive, deleted my local time machine preferences and restarted my computer. He run. "The backup disk should 371,58 GB for backup, but only 239,55 GB are available."

    (4) in the server software, I created a whole new directory on the drive and it helped for TM backups. I deleted my local TM preferences again and restarted. Reconnects, pulled up and? "The backup disk should 371,58 GB for backup, but only 239,55 GB are available."

To be clear, once again, we are talking about a drive externally with 1.42 2 t T available. There is also no limit set in the server for how large backups can be.

So... What is hidden from the folder, what setting, that * thing * here is stuck. How to knock it loose?

Would rather not reformat this drive because he holds other backups (which work fine). Shouldn't I have to. It seems something is wrong between the client and server pieces.

Any help is appreciated. See you soon!

I tried a few things and still nothing. All that * thing * is due to old or false information is not getting updated or deleted when I try one of the things I know.
