Time Machine Error - backup failed

Hello

I get "could not complete back, an error occurred when creating the backup folder"-I have an iMac with an Iomega eGo external hard drive. I checked the previous discussions about this and can not solve. What should I do?

Please take each of the following steps that you have not already tried until the problem is resolved.

1. disconnect, then reconnect the drive.

2. in the menu bar, select

▹ System Preferences Energy Saver power adapter ▹ ▹ 

and uncheck the box marked

Put the hard drives to sleep when possible

If it is checked.

3. some external drives ignore setting the energy saver and turn down in any case. The 'KeepDriveSpinning' of the Director Jon Stovell application can help in this matter. (Credit to ASC member dsrtmacusr for this solution).

4. If the drive is connected to a hub, connect it to a port built into the computer. If it is already connected to a built-in port, and there is another such port, use.

5. If the player has more than one deck (for example, FireWire and USB), try another.

6. check the Web site of the provider of the car for an update of the firmware.

7 contact the seller to see if there is a firmware setting, you can change.

8. If you have installed the provider for the reader software, uninstall it.

9. triple - click anywhere in the line below on this page to select this option:

/Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist

Right-click or Ctrl-click on the highlighted line and select

Services ▹ reveal in Finder (or just to reveal)

in the context menu. A Finder window should open with a selected file. Copy the file to the desktop. Then he (the original, not the copy) move to the trash. You will be asked for your administrator password. Restart the computer and re-create your settings in the Time Machine preferences window. It will show you that you have no backups. Don't worry; which is expected. Perform a backup to test. The backup can take much longer than usual. If TM now works as expected, delete the file that you copied to the desktop.

10. If none of the steps above resolves the problem, the drive may be defective. Try another. You may be able to save an external drive mechanism by installing it in a different pen.

N ° you have lost all your backups.

A device third-party network attached storage (NAS) or a router is unsuitable for use with Time Machine, especially if it's your only backup. I know that's not what you want to hear. I know that Time Machine accepts the device as a backup destination. I know that the manufacturer says the device will work with Time Machine, and I also know that it usually seems to work. Except when you are trying to restore and find that you can't.

Apple has published a specification for network devices that works with Time Machine. No third party provider, AFAIK, does meet this specification. They all use the application of "Netatalk" incomplete, obsolete Apple Filing Protocol.

Apple does not endorse any device third-party network for use with Time Machine. See this support article.

Network backup, use as destination an Apple Time Capsule or an external storage device connected to another Mac or a 802.11ac AirPort base station. Only 802.11ac base stations support time Machine, not older model.

Otherwise, use Time Machine at all. There are other ways to save, although none of them are nowhere near as effective or as well integrated with OS X. I don't have a specific recommendation.

If you are determined to continue to use the device with Time Machine, your only remedy for any resulting problem is the manufacturer (who will blame Apple, neither you nor anyone else but herself.)

  • Time Machine or backup from Sierra installed

I backup my MacBook Pro and MacBook Air to Time Machine but show just 'preparation' constantly.  Tried rebooting the Machine and the time of the Macbook, and they are all connected via Airport utility.  Don't know what other troubleshooting I could undertake?  Any help gratefully received.

Sierra is having issues and never use Time machine on top of an existing backup anyway.

    The steps are to.

    1. archiving of current backups.

Plug a USB key that is equal to the size of the disk of the CT (you mix the terms Time Machine... software backup on the computer... and Time Capsule... material target for backups within a router).

Archive is on the airport utility disk tab.

    2. once the backup is complete. It may take a day or two for 2 TB which is full drive.

Erase the disc from TC... a quick erase is fine.

It takes only a few minutes.

3 factory reset the TC and reconfigure airport under Sierra on one of your Mac utility.

Reset Time Machine preferences and it should start and run very well.

But also, you should read some of the other threads here on the problem.

For example... preparation is supposed to spend a lot of time when you try to use the existing backup... more wireless with two computers together... It will take days to complete.

Open the activity monitor and ensure that other processes do not always use CPU. A person discovered photos was chew 90% CPU making a function which is part of the update and not allowing any time for TM backup in progress.

Time Machine is to back up files on a local disk. If your gmail emails are in local hard disk, they are ongoing. But if they are on a Gmail server, this isn't a function of time Machine.

  • time machine/capsule backup lost

    Hello

When wanting to access the saved data of time capsule via the time machine, time machine shows zero backup history while there would be more than a year with a value of more than 900 GB.  I get this in time machine preferences:

When you click on the available data disk, time capsule/machine displays no backup history and appears empty; the above data disk it is not accessible and cannot be removed.  Yet one of these disks is indicated as an accountant 963 GB of data, and I suspect that it is the only inaccessible.  How the hell could this happen?  Anyone has an idea, and advises?  I do not tinker with the application and airport utility shows no connectivity issues.  Please, let me know as soon as possible - thanks!

    Frank M.

Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for Time Machine discovered a corruption of backup... it will then proceed to delete the backup and start over. The sparsebundle is not deleted... He still occupies the space that it used to before deleting the content took place.

The only way to know if that is really what happened is to open the sparsebundle in the finder. See if it's contained in there... If there is... the question is different. TM has lost its connection to its own protection is also not rare. Any change in the network, you have done for this cause. It is possible to reconnect to the existing backups.

    My recommendations...

    1. read some of Pondini howto in order to understand what is happening.

    http://pondini.org/TM/troubleshooting.html

A4 and A5 are the most useful... TM to reset and verify backups.

    2. open the sparsebundle in the Finder and see if there is indeed always glad... If so, check in the TC. To do this through the disk tab in the airport utility. Plug in a USB key in the TC...

Once you check the disk...... delete it and start a new backup.

You can still access the old backup by plugging the USB directly to the computer... Right-click on the icon of TM in the dock. And select Browse... According to the screenshot below.

The TM and TC combo turns out to be less reliable over time (pun intended).

  • Time Machine: deleted backups of the status "pending".

    Hello world

I manually deleted some old backups Time Machine interface, by clicking on the gear button in the backup Finder and selecting Remove backup.

Now deleted backups are no more hard disk or in the trash, but they are always present in the Time Machine interface in a "pending" status and it is not possible any action on them.

How can I remove them completely from Time Machine?

Thanks in advance for any suggestion,

    Good bye

    Gabriele

Manual removal of the old backups is not a good thing to do. Let Time Machine take care of itself.

I suggest you use Spotlight to reindex your hard disk and backup disk, then run a backup Time Machine and see what clears the problem. If this isn't the case, you might be better off erase your backup disk and start a new Time Machine backup.

  • adding the 2nd Time Machine disk backup capability

I have a Mac pro OS X 10.11.5 with two discs devoted to the backup. When I wanted the first filled to the top, then add the second to continue archiving backup files.

I don't want to lose my older archived data in backups on disk 1.

What happens when I add a second drive to add capacity to the Time Machine backups?  Once the first drive is hard full TM then will use the second drive until it is full?

When you add the second drive, I get a warning that the TM will take turns using the disc 1 and disc 2. But 1 disk is full. TM will not delete old information on Drive 1 to make room? If Yes is not good because I want to keep the old data. I just want to keep incremental backups to Drive 2.

    Please specify the feature.

Yes, TM will continue to save on disk 1 and delete older backups and take turns with disk 2. If you want to keep 1 as it is by car, then you must remove it from the list of backup. Start a new backup on disk 2, and continue. In both cases, the disc 2 will make a new full backup of your computer.

  • Time Machine - keep backups on a disk-without having a full backup?

After that I moved all my old backup data on a new player and liked that I expected Time Machine (TM) just continue where we left it when the smaller drive has been marked as complete. On the contrary, it seems that TM took a full backup take a lot of space for backups that already existed between the data leave the smaller drive?

This kind of destroyed the concept of TM "incremental forever" which I assumed could survive a movement of backup of data from a smaller to a larger drive?

    iMac 2009, 21.5 inch, OSX Yosemite 10.10.5

I replace my computer soon, after many years of good, and one thing that always gives me peace of mind is my Time Machine backups to an external drive (Seagate Free Agent 1 TB). My computer had about 800 GB on it, and I was getting messages that the disc was full and could not make a full backup. So I removed 200 GB + computer, deleted several backups that I didn't need and changed my settings to not save another external drive like Dropbox, and more. Close to 650 GB, I had the size of backups down.

But now, he is still not back up the full thing AND most disturbing, my latest backup is 28 January. So, after years of backup with diligence to my computer, I don't see any earlier versions. As I know, nothing of the past that I have now, but what I can do to see what existing backups? 'Get info' said 760GB is used, and yet when I open the app, it shows that two backups. Any ideas?

    Thank you.

I have a huge hard drive I want to backup via Time Machine to my big time hard drive of the Machine, but not for the little one (lack of space).

Apple has not yet implemented a way to do this with different hard drives backup?  Each hard drive would just need to have its own exclusions settings.

I had rather not use a third-party solution.

    ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

It is stored in the file package VM, with everything else. So I think you're wondering if you can save the snapshot itself, without having to save the rest of the files for this virtual machine. The answer is probably not "easily", although I'm sure that others with more experience can give you a more detailed answer.

The long and short if this is probably: If all you want to do, on a regular basis, save the files that are inside the virtual machine that have been changed (for example Money files), you must store them outside of the virtual machine (usually on a shared folder). But make sure you back up the virtual machine itself at least once, and probably whenever you install something again. But of course it depends on how paranoid, you will lose your hard drive (and paranoia is not always a bad thing, aty least in this case).
