Too long file names

I searched this but have not found exactly the same problem

I'm on a laptop with Windows 7.

Recently, we changed our server to be online only.

This means that all of our readers are now thanks to dropbox or something similar.

A disc remained in my reader list.

Initially, I had access to this hard drive, but could not edit the files and folders inside.

Look, but don't touch.

When the car started all the information on this drive was transferred to online readers AND an external hard drive.

Which was not noticed immediately, was that some 150 file names were too long for each transfer.

I still have access to these files.

But when I try to open or to copy the files from the windows Explorer, it blocks.

I tried to copy and paste, line of cmd, and several smart programs and I can't seem to get these files to copy, or even move.

Copy / paste comes up with the error too long file name.

I can however copy about 2 GB for other files without problem.

The name of the file is certainly the question that all other files and folders can be copied to another drive.

On the copy of the disc it comes up with the file name too long for these files.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

This issue is beyond the scope of this site and must be placed on Technet or MSDN

During the installation of the CAD of DraftSight software on a system running Windows 7 Prof I get an error message 1320, too long file name and the software cannot be installed.  A work around DraftSight suggested to rename the data folder C:\ProgramData\Application, DraftSight installation and then restore the original name of the file.  A second workaround was to delete the folder, install the program and then restore the folder.  A third workarounds solution had to drag or copy and paste the Application Data folder on the desktop, install the software and then return the ProgramData folder in the directory.

For Windows 7 teacher the problem with alternatives a & is the shortcut to the application data to other programs is lost when the name or the file is restored, leaving only an Application Data folder and delete the shortcut.  The problem with the three workaround is that the shortcut cannot be dragged or cut and paste on the desktop.

How can I temporarily allow the program to install and create a folder of Application data in the ProgramData directory and then move the program information in the folder the shortcut pointing to?

I would also like to know how to get the same result with Windows Home Premium where the Application data file is not a shortcut, but is actually a locked folder.  I would need to enter the locked folder information on the program.  Some users of DraftSight say the two alternatives have worked for them and I suspect that they may work for Windows 7 Home Premium, but the impact on other programs may not be obvious.

When you try to install the program?

Assuming that you have the ability to choose where to install the program, you can try to shorten the location.
For example, you can try to install to C:\Program Files\Draftsight\ or if necessary C:\Draftsight

If this does not work, there is nothing that we will be able to suggest other than to contact the developer again. Change the ProgramData folder should not affect this type of problem and the only thing that is likely to affect the writing on the application folder data would be the length of your username, but even then I would feel that the application is something wrong in this case.

  • Impossible to copy due to 'too long file name.

When I copy a collection of folders & files from an external USB key from 1 TB to the NTFS format for a 2 TB drive internal SATA also formatted NTFS, I get an error message indicating 32 files cannot be copied because of "too long file name.  As both drives are connected to the same computer (OP system Win 7 Home Premium 32 bit) I do not understand why?

I realize that I could track down files with long names and shorten the but they are among the other 10,596 files in 700 Folders & subfolders, the path to the files would be the same on the drive, i.e. drivename:\music\album\filename, they have copied successfully for another internal drive to the external USB drive but won't copy from the external disk to the internal drive of my PC.

  • Cannot decompress web complete sample application catalog because too long file name.

I have OBIEE 11.1.1.5 installed on a Windows 2003 SP2 environment, which installs SampleAppLite. I wanted to install the sample full application I downloaded Oracle. When I tried to unzip the provided catalog with the complete sample application file, I received errors of WinZip. I have determined that the cause of the errors is a too long file name. The length of the path and file name exceeds the limit of 255 characters in windows.

Anyone else tried the complete sample application on windows?

    Karen,

This can happen for SampleApp as well as for the installation of Oracle BI Apps on Windows due to a setting of configuration and limitation of Windows.

My opinion is that the Oracle BI PM team really built OBIEE 11 g Linux first and then Windows is a minor version.

However, to solve your problem, configure your environment as if it'll be a deployment locally to bracts and create a shared near the root folder. Then the em Console merger change the RPD deployment tab to a location 'sharing' and also to adjust the assignment of web site catalogue.

Thus, for example, on your C:\ drive create the following structure

    C:\
    -OBIEEShare
    -THE RPD
    WebCat-
    -GlobalCache

Then do C:\OBIEEShare a shared folder so that it can be accessed through the following UNC, \\machineName\OBIEEShare\

Place the SampleApp DPR on the course of \\machineName\OBIEEShare\RPD\
Place the SampleApp WebCat folder on the \\machineName\OBIEEShare\WebCat\ course

Now in do it Fusion Console EM the shared location for the RPD is \\machineName\OBIEEShare\RPD\ and the location of the web catalog is \\machineName\OBIEEShare\WebCat\SampleApp

Transfer your file SampleApp.rpd and enter the correct credentials.

Restart the necessary components and you're done.

    See you soon,.

  • Try to copy the corrupted user profile profile settings and I am met with the error message "too long file name!

I tried to connect to my laptop today and instead of recording in the usual way a message that windows creates new office settings. When he finally connects me I get a message of bubble speech saying I was connected to a temporary profile, I reboot several times and the problem persists. After a little google research, I realize my old profile is probably corrupted... I have not downloaded a new software/hardware.

I followed the steps of miscrosoft to copy the files from my old profile to a new user, everything in the file transfer went well until the last few files to copy. Then, I get this error message saying "the file names would be too long for the destination folder", only two options are cancel and skip available. Which are useful.

I do not recognize these folders that are too long (the names are the random letters and numbers), I tried to look for them, nothing is done. And to be honest, I don't understand what that means.

UPDATE: I decided to copy folder a bit at a time and it solved my problem, that all the files were copied successfully. However, now I was struck with a new problem. Whenever I try to access my files, I get a message that says windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not be authorized appropriate. How can I fix it?

It comes to my laptop and I administer it / have access to passwords, etc.

It simply means that your old account was the owner of that file or folder.  You can change the security to access your new account.  Here are the instructions: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-PK/windows-vista/Troubleshoot-access-denied-when-opening-files-or-folders

  • How can I change how long file names & file can be?

How can I change how long my file names & file can be?

The path length limit cited in the article referenced by Abdul R is 260.

It depends on the length of the full path to the file (for example, C:\Program Files\filename.txt). Windows limits a single path to 260 characters. That's why you can sometimes get an error when copying a file with a very long file name to a location that has a longer path than the location of the original file.

    -------------------------------------

However, there are various subtleties that reduce that number in practice to 255 (or less), including all spaces.

We start with the absolute limit imposed by Windows. The API operating system puts a limit (called MAX_PATH) 260 characters for the display name with the included path. This number is often cited. However, the current limits are smaller due to various other restrictions. For example, all names have to have a terminator at the end normally null only the computer see this fine marker, but it is considered as a character if there are really only 259 characters available. (Forget to count the null terminator is a common mistake). A three other characters are used by the designation of the drive or volume (for example, C:\). Thus, the limit to name all the folders and subfolders as well as the file is reduced to 256 characters. However, no files or a folder may have a name more than 255 characters. This includes spaces and some backslashes used as separators. This limit of 255 characters per object is imposed by the way Windows to encode the characters but other considerations usually impose lower limits.

    =====================

And now, the grand fanale, the answer to your question:

You cannot change the limit of the length of the path. It is imposed by various requirements and is coded in the system hard. You can set the 'balance' between the files and folder/sub-folder names. For example, use short directory names in order to use more long filenames.

    ======================

All this can be a nuisance to the user. A file name may be OK when originally created but be too long if the file should be copied or moved to another location whose path is longer.

There may be additional complications if the files are to be burned to CD or DVD.

  • Caused long file name still plant during transcoding

I don't know if anyone else has had this experience, but I had a few extracts audio and video that I had to run through a converter and it added to their file names with their encoding of the parameters, etc.  When I went to burn the clips on a DVD using Encore CS4, it kept crashing on me when he went to transcode the files.

Initially, I assumed that the files have been corrupted or had some kind of problem with the way they had been coded, so I re-exported them on a number of times as the conversion software using different parameters.  Each time still planted when he went to transcode, them.  I even tried to restart the computer in Windows XP mode (rather than Windows 7 64-bit) where I Encore CS3 installed and it broke as well.

Finally, I've shortened the names of files (just a guess on my part) and all worked without problem.

Everyone knows about this problem?  If still had an error message come up to the top to indicate the file name were too long, that would have been useful.

I him have not seen with long file names, but with some characters rarely used (at least in the names of files) and also with spaces. I took to using the line of underscores instead of spaces, as it used to be. So far, no problem. Now, I have generally short file names, so maybe I just never exceeded certain limits.

Good luck and thanks for pointing out,

  • Impossible to rename/delete/file stubborn (long file name)

I have a file (that I could rename 'Test') that contains 2 files. A file 'XXX.html' and his 'XXX_files' file with a long name (about 20 words). No matter how hard I try, I'm not able to delete the folder, or the 'Test' that contain.

In addition, the XXX_files folder is not accessible when I try to open it (error "syntax is incorrect").
The funny part is that I am not able to rename one of them with a shorter name. When I try to do, I get a message saying that the specified file name is too long!

    I tried the following methods:
    1. "Del" key
    2. "Shift" + "Del" key
    3. "File shredder", a 3rd party software
    4. "7 zip", a different 3rd party software
    5. Command: rmdir /s q, DEL command (for the folder that contains these 2 files) after the end of the Explorer
    Please help me!

I fell on the same topic, like bradex:

Had a file in Ubuntu with illegal characters (': 'and' \'): it cannot be renamed, and even from dir /x could not generate its short name. Google brought me here so I later on found this proposal for a solution and this worked for me. :)
I hope this helps someone who comes here and also has the same problem.
  • Cannot delete files with long file names in Windows 7

Unnecessary Windows 7 will not erase a file whose name is too long. I have no name, it is in a temporary folder of IE. I can't get rid of it as options to rename will not be visible.

Thanks, but I have solved the problem. The error message was about 'file path or destination file name is too long. It is the backup to the temporary internet file that was causing a problem: he made the PATH too long as she added additional elements on the path. That was simply solved by the path to 2 bits, (path upper and lower file path) to cut and remove separately.

When I tried to delete the .jpg image with the extremely long filename at the end of the long path he says as the destination folder (ie the TRASH) could not hold the file due to excessive length. It's confusing to say the least.

Anyway that little trash has bit the dust.

  • How can I get Windows Vista to stop the shortening of long file names?

I copy the files with long names in .zip files. Whenever I drag a drag the file to .zip (also with a long name) file, it renames the .zip file in a much shorter name. This only happens on my computer, my wife can perform the same task that I'm with her computer, and it won't rename the file name. We're both under Windows Vista. Is there a way I can get to rename the files? Thank you!
