UCS 5108 - Placement of the blade

We have now installed two B200 M2 blade side by side (slot 1 and 2) in each of our 5108 chassis. I have been told that they must be placed in the slots in a particular order to use the two links ascending interconnection currently connected. I can't find anything to that effect in the chassis or the UCSM installation guides.

Can someone confirm what two blades of slots should go please?

Scott,

This is not correct.  You can fill any blade in any location, but according to rising how you use between your chassis and FI, some blades will be pinned at the same rising.  There are a few aspects with the blade load balancing when less than 4 uplinks are used, but that's all.

See the attached diagram

  • Configuring the Cisco UCS 5108 ports

    Hi all

I'm new in the world of the Cisco UCS server and am setting up Cisco UCS 5108 blade server. The server has two Cisco UCS 6324 interconnections fabric I did the initial Setup on and I try to configure the ports for the blades. Looking through the various articles and tutorials after setting global policies, I see the whole world establishment of uplink and server ports. What I read the uplink ports are plugged directly into the switches (I work with two cisco nexus switches), and server ports are used to connect to the chassis.

I wonder once the configured ports server what exactly are supposed to connect to? I assumed they would also connect to the switch nexus with the uplink ports. However, every time I set up the server ports and plug them in, the switch doesn't seem to have flooded and we lose all connectivity. If I unplug, the connection is restored almost immediately.

The current configuration, that I work with is two ports uplink on each fabric interconnect (4 2 total in each switch of nexus), two server ports on each (4 2 total, in every nexus switch). The only other element connected to the nexus switches is a SAINT who will be configured as a boot and storage of the UCS 5108.

Looks like you have a Mini UCS (6324), with 4-port 10 GB (each FI/IOM) with port QSFP 40 GB that can provide network connectivity linking rising, or if configured as a server port, could be used to connect to a server in a rack compatible Cisco UCS, or connect to a 5108 additional with IOM 2204XP chassis.  The blades installed in your initial 5108 chassis 6324 FI/IOM of housing have internal connectivity to the FIs / IOM without the need to configure ports 'server'...

Please take a look at some of the visuals in the datasheet below.

    http://www.Cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/servers-unified-computing/UCS-6300-series-fabric-interconnects/datasheet-C78-732207.html

Unified ports can also be configured as a FC ports for connectivity of FC switch upstream or directly related to CF Storage processors.

After having watched the datasheet, let me know if you have any other questions, and I'll try to address them.

You'll not need actually configure ports such as ports 'server' unless you connect servers in a rack.

Please configure any ethernet SFP type connected to your switches nexus upstream as 'network' uplinks.  I guess that you don't plan on a disjoint config layer 2 (where each FI has several sets of uplinks will different devices upstream, or the same device with different VLANS allowed on each link).    If you are, we can have a separate thread about how you need to configure that.

  • vNIC works do not on the blades of the B series

    FI: 6248

    Chassis: 5108

    Blades: B200 M2 x 2

    Uplink: 5548UP

I'll put up a pretty standard UCS deployment and I the uplinks VPC of the 6248 fab 'normal' on the link 5548 s. Uplinks seem to work properly as I can manage UCS without any problem and can KVM to each blade. I set up the pool mgmt ext and each blade receives an address correctly.

Initially, I set up a Xenserver blade and was able to connect on a virtual local network server that I created. However, since then I have rebooted the server and may not have to work again little matter what I try. I also tried to load a Windows 2008 x 64 server and while I am able to load the operating system and configure the network adapters in Windows (after installing the drivers B200), there is no network connectivity... It's as if the VLAN tagged traffic is not sent upstream.

I checked that all our VLAN are passed on to the uplink between FIs them and the 5548 s nexus and I know that it worked at some point, so it intrigued me.

I must have been misconfigured something but I can't for the life of understand me what it was. I've recreated the VLAN, Services, models of Service profiles, etc. Whenever I reload a blade, whether with Xenserver or windows standard, I am able to see and configure network adapters, but I can't get any traffic. I can't do a ping from within the 6248 s since this cmd is not support, nor I see any troubleshooting traffic being passed.

Can someone please pass along some troubleshooting tips and/or the places that I can look for problems where the traffic is dying? I'm pulling my hair out!

    TIA!

    Just to clarify,

Native of VLANS and VLAN by default are two different things.  Native simply refers to the VLAN on a 802. 1 q trunked link which will not be added a tag VLAN.  By default VLAN is the VLAN 'automatically assigned' to all interfaces vNIC.  By default, the "vlan by default ' is vlan 1, but this can be changed.

When you create a profile Service (or a model by the way), you can use the Simple, or Assistant Expert.  The Simple Wizard assumes that each vNIC will work as an "access port" by being assigned to only one vlan.  In expert mode, you can select either the port to operate as a Port of access (VLAN unique) or trunk (multiple VLANs).  It is only with the vNIC trunk configuration where you can select the option button VLAN "native".

So let's say you have a Windows host to be assigned to VLAN 10.

You could create a simple vNIC than acccess VLAN 10 only, or you can create a trunk Interface, but set as the native VLAN 10.  Each method returns the same result.

To as ESX & Hyper-V operating systems you can indeed Trunking and therefore allowing several VLANS.

On top of that, although we present what seems to be 'Access' and 'Trunk' ports, now there actually no access port.  That means UCS, when you select a vNIC to be an access port is just make a trunk with the only interface VLAN as the native.

You can see this NXOS if you look at 'int trunk.

With the above configuration, what fabric or IOM is used, A or B?

    Static pinning

Server Blade/link 1 Slot 1,3,5,7---qui IOM will be used for these blades?

Server Blade/link 2 Slot 2,4,6,8---qui IOM will be used for these blades?

    Q2.

How to calculate the bandwidth of 20G in the Cisco documentation?

    Q3.

If blade 1 o/s performs an i/o write request, said deterministically by the IOM (left of the chassis), if there is another reading of e/s issued by blade 1 once again, the I/O path passes by the IOM B(Right of Chassis) or by IOM to happen again? Here, no matter what algorithm to determine this?

    Q4.

How to design a solution that will be to balance the load between the IOM 2? Or we can leave to Cisco UCSM decide automatically?

I undertsand that I can verify failover allow the use of UCSManager to manually select fabric or fabric B as the main way and the other as secondary in A - B (A is the Pri) or B - A B as the Pri.

Getting better understanding now. Excellent help from you.

Assuming I create 1 service profile with the following:

Adapter 1 as seen within UCSM

vHBA-A- Fabric A - Is this 4GB as of now or can we treat it as 10G Port too likes vNIC?

Depends on the Mezz card.  M71/M81 have 4GB FC chipsets.  M72KR uses an 8GB FC chip.

    vHBA-B- Fabric B - Same as above

vNIC-A-Fabric A-This is 10G port, for sure, right.

    Yes

    vNIC-B-Fabric B-Same as above

For VMware vDS setup, say for vMotion/Service Console to have Active and Failover/Redundant vmnic, should I team the 2 vNIC-A and vNIC-B or

I should CREATE another Adapter and team the 2 ports or 1 port here with Adapter 1?

Depending on which adapter you're using, you can create max to 2 NICs (M71KR/M72KR) or up to 56 NICs (M81KR).  If you can only create a max of 2 NICs you'll need to use both NICs as uplinks to your vDS - both will be active. With Palo (M81KR)

It is creating a lot of confusion for non-Cisco Blade folks even from VMware and me too here as "physically" it is still only 1 M81KR with Dual-Ports for vHBA and vNIC alike???

The value add for the M81 (Palo) is you're able to create multiple virtual NICs/HBAs which can all be treated individually (VLANs, QoS, Security, Stat Counters etc).  You are correct that you're still limited to two phsyical underlying NICs on each blade - where your design questions come into play is how you want to manage the behavior & performance of each NIC.

Can you please throw some light into it as I think it is all in your head?

You have done a great job in enlightening me and the rest.

  • UCS Auto-deploiement of the configuration using PXE and double vNIC

We are trying to set up Auto deploy blades UCS B200 M3.  Our facility has the chassis connected to double 6248 fabric interconnects.  We managed to get this to work when the blades have been identified by the MAC configured on the DHCP (Infoblox) server address.  However, in trying to solve the scenario of the tempting PXE server start using either NIC, thus having two MAC addresses, this scenario could not be supported on the DHCP server (mapping two MAC addresses to a single IP address).  Then we had the idea of using the GUID/UUID of the blade as a unique identifier, as it is the same regardless of the NETWORK card is used.

We tried to put in place, but were unsuccessful.  Blade sends its ' GUID by using the option DHCP 97, but the DHCP server is only looking for the customer ID via DHCP Option 61.  We have not been able to determine how, otherwise, the blade server can send its ' GUID via DHCP Option 61 and Infoblox tells us that their server may not be configured to accept the Option DHCP 97 as a customer identifier.

Someone has encountered this situation and it is resolved?  It is certainly not a unique situation, having a server blade with two network adapters.

Thanks in advance for your answer.

That's why you need to select the 'hardware failover flag' in the definition of a vnic. If your vnic is attached to A fabric and a fails, you will automatically turn on to the B-fabric.

  • Half of the blades fell when creating a new channel of uplink port?

I have a pair of 6248UP fiber interconnection (A and B) with blade servers connected. The switch upstream is Nexus7k. Fabric A and B each right has now a channel of uplink port to the Nexus switch upstream. I add a new Nexus switch to connect to the interconnection of fiber. The plan is to have uplink some VIRTUAL networks for Nexus one pass and uplink some VIRTUAL to the second Nexus switch networks.

After that I configured the new Nexus switch with a channel port (only allowing some VIRTUAL networks) and corresponding port created on fabric channel A and B, new ports-channels have increased. However, half of the blade servers were down after that. What could be the reasons for this problem? Is it because half of the blades have been pinned dynamically on the new channel port, but the new port-channel side Nexus allow only some VIRTUAL networks?

Is there a way to configure the Channel ports on fiber to interconnect with only the trunk through some VIRTUAL networks? for traffic from the server would not be sent to the port-channel where VLAN server is not allowed?

    Thank you

In general, all NICs for/vhba of a fabric are declining, if all uplinks of this fabric are declining.

It's not clear to me, what you're trying to achieve?

If you create a global VLAN (for the two fabrics), this vlan is automatically inserted in all dependent North trunk links, unless you configure a leaking installation

Create a new vlan on UCS requires of course also this vlan is created on the switch connection and vpc by default allows all the VLANS. Could it be, that the vlan not appeared on the switch and was therefore not upward on the trunk?

  • Update of the blade and the vhba vnic OS driver update firmware

    Hi all

Political host Firmware package within SPs allows us to update the Firmware of the blade.
    It works very well.

Usually we do things in the following order:
1 change the host of firmware in an SP, "user Ack' reboot to trigger the update of the firmware on blade.
    2. when the blade firmware update is completed, booting into the operating system (Windows or ESXi) and upgrade the vnic and vhba drivers, then reboot again.

Because the steps above involve 2 reboots, we thought if it's ok to save 1 reset the first update the vnic vhba OS drivers, then 'user Ack' a reboot so that both the drviers and firmware must appear in a single reboot?

    For example:
    1. upgrade the vnic and vhba drivers in the operating system (Windows or ESXi). Does not accept the prompt to restart within the OS.
    2. in the SP of the UCS, change firmware, "User Ack" restarting host to trigger the update of the firmware on blade.
Result: A single reboot instead of two reboots.

Is this ok to do it in that order, and it is supported?

    Thank you

    RR

  • 'Switch' - what is the meaning of an active State or ensure the blades?

    Hello

If I want to turn off a UCS B Series chassis, I put the blades in mode standby via the button "power"?

I noticed there is a power button on each blades and it is orange/orange when there is no association of service profile.

However, by pressing this button, it turns green but when I press it again, it will not turn back orange/amber.

I've seen documents mentioning Green is active and amber standby.

What the different terms of use between assets and mode standby if there is no associated service profile? I get out the blade even if the light is green?

    Thank you very much.

The impact will be that you will have to "re - ack" Blade.  I mean, is there an option to UCSM allowing you to re - recognize the blade that you shot, because if you think about it, the service profile has virtual componments attached to the profile so if you pull it, you will have problems.  Make sense?

  • Shorten the length of the blade according to the State of an inserted SWF file

My question may be advanced.  I am using Captivate 4 for this project.

I am trying to create a manual online that describes a technical system.

I created multiple SWF files for the various components and inserted them into a master project of Captivate.  I use the table of contents in the main project to provide navigation components.

My problem is that the SWF file to show the various components have a visible bar of 'control'.  Since it is an event (without audio) we slowed down (some say too slow) for slow readers.  But given the control bar allows readers 'faster' the ability to speed upward and etc.

My question, so if a user it accelerates and reaches the end of the file SWF slide continues until the 'period' is over.  For example, I have an embedded SWF which is 66 seconds long, the blade must be 66 seconds long to allow it to play fully.  I tried to adjust various settings and the settings of the imported video, but no matter what the video should be 66 seconds before I can do anything with the slide that hosts it.

Any ideas?  I do not control the imported SWF file (which is actually a published Captivate project) and I do not master the file SWF Captivate "accommodation".

Main reason for which is "broken apart", is can I outsource the various resources so I individual file charges "on-demand" and does not have a massive SWF file.

Before asking, I thought using the Aggregater, but it does not work in Internet Explorer (HTM file) and will not cross the Preloader and my audience does not flash drives as I do.

Hi Ziqiel, hope I will find the solution.

I use the same technique as you Captivate 3. I insert the SWF on a main project. So, I insert a clickable area with options to "Stop the project until user click ' and 'no action '. You place this box anywhere on your slide where the swf file. It shut down the main project, but your swf will continue to play until the user clicks a button to continue.

It is clear to you? And is it useful?
