UCS SAN connectivity

Hi guys,.

I'm working on getting my SAN hung with UCS. Here's my setup.

There are 2 switches of MDS. Each is connected to both SPS. Each HBA will be zoned into the port on each SP.

Two MDS 9500 SAN cheated and cables are cross connected at the END, so that we redendency.

NPIV is enabled on MDS switch. I get an error that says intailizing and when I look at the SAN guys for an indeterminate period of speed says that they are 8.00Gbps.

Do not know what is the problem of port do not come in green. Can someone help me please.

Hi Srinivas,

What kind of interconnect fabric do you use?  Uplinks of CF are connected to the expansion on the fi module?

Can you ssh in the interconnection of fabric and run nxos connect and then show int for this interface?  And do the same thing on the side of mds.

  • A procedure for restart underlying SAN connected to 5 ESXi hosts?

    Hello

We get the warning of the underlying SAN connected to ESXi 5 hosts.  Consultant suggests restarting the SAN and the FC Switch.

We would like to know is there, any measure must be made on the hosts ESXi connected to the San to restart will not affect the ESXi host and VM?  Such as: Stop all VMs,... etc.

    Your opinion is requested.

    Thank you

I would say, put the army in maintenance mode and perform a restart of the SAN and CF.

Once the window over, make sure that the host does not see the paths of the dead and exit the host from maintenance mode.

  • iSCSI SAN Connectivity

I'm kinda new to this Yes, you can be sweet.

We are migrating some of our less critical servers to VSphere. Because the servers are at camp, we'll install eSXI on our server and use hosted camp via iSCSI SAN. The camp provided us with a block of IP addresses that we can use for SAN connectivity.

SAN connectivity is on it's own dedicated NIC (1 for testing purposes) and physical switch.

    Management network
    192.168.72/24

    SAN IP blocked
    172.26.11.0/26
    172.26.11.1 - GW

    The target IPs
    172.31.3.105
    172.31.3.109

I created a virtual switch for iSCSI and tied a physical NETWORK adapter to it. I then added the iSCSI adapter software, responsible for the target in the dynamic, linked discovery the NIC to the iSCSI Software card.

I then added a road 172.31.3.0/24 to go to 172.26.11.1.

When I scan for the storage of the new, I just blank. If I go back into the adapter software, targets are now listed on the static discovery tab. The camp is saying that their HDS does not all applications.

So I built a virtual Windows machine and loaded on this host (using an Openfiler iSCSI on the management network) and installed the Microsoft iSCSI initiator. By using this software, I am able to connect to the SAN CoLo network from inside the virtual machine.

What Miss me? Why can I not connect to the network the host SAN? Any help will be much appreciated.

  • ESX 4 SAN connectivity does not

We are in the process of upgrading ESX ESX 3.5 to 4.

We have Dell 1955 servers and an EMC CX3-40 San.

Previously we connecting the ESX host San where would

    • Install navicli/agent

    • Make the switch zoning

    • Add the host to the CX3-40 storage group

    • Perform a rescan of the hba

    • All data on the San warehouses would seem so

So as part of our upgrade to ESX 4, we decided to rebuild our ESX servers from scratch.

I've read the documentation, and looking for onling the navicli/agent is not necessary in ESX 4.

    So now I do:

    • The zoning of the switch (in fact it's already done so it is not a problem here)

    • Add the host to the CX3-40 storage group

    • Perform a rescan of the hba

    • It's that I get.

The task of rescan on the ESX host will run... I waited about 20 minutes and still nothing.

The first time I did the host is not connected to a vCenter server.

So when you are doing the re-scan, finally I lose connectivity to the host with the vSphere client. I can not re - connect.

I can still ping the ESX host and ssh to it.

The only option I have is cold power off the server.

I then turn it on and it starts it takes forever to the discovery part of storage (do not remember what it says)

I waited 20 minutes yet and I can't always connect to the host using the vSphere client.

I pressed ALT + F12 on the console and I see a lot of things that has a white background with black text. Unfortunately I can't make much sense of it as it goes off at the edge of the screen (he dressed not in the next line).

The only way to get the host to start and be responsive is to unplug cables optical fiber of the ESX host.

I tried this on two different ESX hosts that have been built from scratch and both times the same problems are happening.

    Help, please.

I'm not sure how to diagnose this problem, where I should start looking for etc.

  • UCS - san-port-channel on vpc

    Hello

I hope someone can help with this,

I have a Setup with 2 Nexus of 5548 connected via a link of vpc peers and a keepalive, these two nexus switch have a link of standard VPC to a 6500 upstream. It works fine,

Then, there are several native FC connections of the 5548 to of 6248. I know that there is the possibility to configure the channel port of CF on the UCS 2.0 but it is possible to link 5548 CF interfaces in a port channel san through a vpc between the nexus of 5548.

so, for example, I can port-channel which follows through a vpc or is a channel of port san, limited to the same nexus only switch ports.

    Fc1/31 & fc1/32 fabric sent to-> NX5K - 1 Port fc1/31 & NX5K - 2 Port fc1/32 (san port-channel 10 on a VPC)

    Fabric B fc1/31 & fc1/32 passed to-> NX5K - 1 Port fc1/32 & NXFK - 2 Port fc1/31 (san port-channel 11 on a VPC)

    Thank you

    Ray.

It is not possible. VPC is the only Layer 2 ethernet port channel. Port channel San cannot be built through vpc

  • Is it possible for HA / VMotion to migrate a virtual computer when the fiber of SAN connectivity is lost / Cup?

    Use: Version ESX 4 / vCenter4

I have a cluster with ESX 4 nodes running HA. I want to know if it is possible for vmotion to migrate a virtual computer if the host on which it lives has a loss of fiber optic connectivity to SAN/back-end storage. I can get VMotion to work when I go unplug the Ethernet cable to the back of the esx host, but when I unplug the fiber connections that will freeze the virtual machine and no migration will happen. Is it possible to do this with VMotion HA? I also tried to use aggressive DRS to see if when I unplug the fiber it lose connectivity and a loss of memory or cpu and migrate... so not happened... the vm always reports to vCenter that memory and cpu have not changed... then DRS don't not kick to migrate the virtual machine.

    Thank you.

There is no such thing for HA. HA only fires when there is a host or a network isolation fails. DRS also does not realize this. However, there are a lot of events that can trigger an action such as "maintenance mode". don't know if there is a for the failures of way, just check it out. It is described in the following pdf document: http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/r40_u1/vsp_40_u1_admin_guide.pdf

  • How to reconnect safely iSCSI SAN connection after new ESXi4u1 reinstall on USB?

    Hi all

Can anyone here guide me how to add the connection to the current host of ESXi 4 iSCSI SAN?

I think not as export the ESXi existing profile using vMA can do much because the version number is different so ESXi profile export is useless.

Note: during the installation of 4u1 ESXi I unplug the host LAN cable.

    Thank you.

  • How to get iSCSI SAN connected to ESX when the SAN is on a different subnet?

    Hi all

I have two machines ESX which are directly connected to a San that are on a different subnet other network cards.  Other network cards are 10.x.x.x and the SAN is on 172.16.x.x, however whenever I try to add the iSCSI storage, the system will never find the LUN.  I put the vmkernel 172.16.x.x but it does not always find them.  I know that the LUNS are configured correctly if its ESX just having problems with the other subnet.

You need to activate the Service Console to see the iSCSI SAN, too. This is because you use the initiator software. For example, you can add a second SC in the vSwitch that your VMKernel Port is connected and align on the same subnet.

    Kind regards

  • ESX 3.5 SAN connectivity

    Hello

Have 2 new servers with u2 esx 3.5 installed. Connected to a San but I can't not to see the LUNS in VC. Is there anything you want to activate on the servers to see SAN LUNS?

Have you checked the zoning, and it seems to be OK.

    Am I missing something here?

What King of environment SAN yo have?

for example, with EMC clariion you would do the following.

Install HBA in host, connect the cables between the host and the switch zone each HBA to each SP port, go to Navisphere and verify the status of the connection to verify that zoning works, either perform a manual HBA registration or install the NaviAgent EMC on the host, create LUNS, create a storage group, add LUNS and host to the storage group perform a rescan of the ESX host or other adapters of VI Client-configuration-storage, or, from the service console # esxcfg - rescan vmhba? (? = each HBA on the esx host), then add storage via "add storage - storage.

covering clariion, but most of the paintings are basically the same.

  • esxi 3.5 to IBM SAN connection

    Hi guys

    It's my current setup.

    At the hs21 blade

    1. 2 connectors internal SAS HDD

    2 Qlogic FC card

and all the other bits and piece.

I installed esxi on it. Went perfectly without any problems. I now want to connect of the logical drives on the esxi (IBM DS3000) SAN so he can use it for storage.

    I took action: -.

    1. from the virtual client, I found the HBA 2 / mac addresses fot the Qlogic of Config map > storage

    2. I pointed out a logical drive to both... Yes LD1 pointing to esxi host with 2 HBAS

3 restart esxi and it shows the cards, but when I go to don't add storage no chance... doesn't find the LD

This configuration is a proof of concept and we are almost all sold to buy the full product for our environment.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Aben

When you control-Q at the start of the qlogic card can you then see lun in there ID 0?  Everything looks ok from the screenshots.  Maybe the loop id is not located on the qlogic card. (try a loop of 125 id)

  • UCS kvm - connection failed

    Hello

    I encountered problem with kvm.

When I try to run the kvm console, I get "connection failed", but I managed to connect only once in 10 times.

I have "Management Pool of IP" and I can see the ip address assigned to my blade server.

Is that someone has the same problem?

    Thank you!

To fix this problem with CICM (KVM) access, make sure that the Pool(ext-mgmt) IP management is part of the same VLAN as the FIC IP subnet. CICM access is provided on the MGMT 0 and interface 1 on the FIC and not 10GB uplinks.

  • HA with the loss of SAN connectivity

    Hi all

We organize three identical hosts of the ESX 4.0 U1 configured in a Cluster like HA and DRS using CF to shared storage.

Each host has 4 network adapters and HBAs FC 2. We have run some tests to see if the VMotion moves VMs when there is a hardware failure.

VMotion works very well when manually move us the machines among hosts, when we disconnect a host on the network, and when we power down.

The problem is that when we remove both cables CF of a host which is running VMs these VMs even if they seem to be running, they are not available in the network, or through the Console and VMotion does not occur to move the State of the virtual machines to another host.

Is it possible to configure a host to move running VMs when losing connectivity to shared storage?

you do this will alarms a little, but I do not believe, you can trigger an event of vMotion, but you can initiate maintenance mode.  Here's a good example

  • Procedure for P to V'ing a HP Server which is already SAN connected?

Yes, SAN issues. Morphology, longevity, would apply to bands (a small action of Bladerunner go...)

Anyway, we'll be P to V'ing a physical server that is SAN attached.

I thought we need to disconnect the cable adapter hba and right p to v, HDD space, then re - attach, but won't be not ESX seek only vmfs and not on the normal windows partition / drive?

There is also the question of the new WWN. Appreciated by any direction.

    Hello.

It is, of course, a generalization, but you could perform the P2V and just exclude the SAN disks.  Then re-zone LUN to present them to the ESX host.  Finally, add the readers as RDM to your virtual machine.

    Good luck!

  • UCS iSCSI SAN Configuration

    All,

I can't find good documentation on the connection of a UCS SAN iSCSI storage system.  We run an Equallogic SAN iSCSI and I need to connect our UCS system.  I find a lot of documentation on Fibre Channel, but of course who does not help me.  Does anyone know if any documentation configuration iSCSI they can point me to?  I intend to just use it for storage and will NOT try to boot from SAN.

    Thank you

    Ken

    Ken,

There is no "formal" for iSCSI access guide, but it's pretty simple.  It's just like the implementation of ethernet access to something else. The only consideration you may want to make your MTU size is.  Most of the people set up MTU/frames extended on their iSCSI VLANS.

This requires the following to accomplish.

    1. create a class system UCS QoS with a MTU of 9000 & apply to the vNIC (s) Service profile-> vNIC iSCSI->

    2. enable extended frames (9000 MTU) on all switches between (UCS) initiator and iSCSI Target (Equalloqic).

    3. turn on the frames on OS adapter (Vmkernel port for ESX, the Windows network adapter advanced properties)

As you can see the only task-specific UCS is the QoS policy that allows an MTU of 9000 bytes size - assuming you use frames in your environment - very recommneded especially with 10 G.
