Unable to access Windows Update page

I am running XP Service Pack 3 and were unable to access the Windows Update page for a few weeks now. I get an error message saying that "Internet Explorer can not locate the page". I tried several routes to access the update page, but they all fail. Analysis of virus and malware picked up nothing. I am running Internet Explorer Ver 8.

It turns out that the problem was software malicious. After the last post, more I tried to do at least I could do: Internet Explporer wouldn't start again, I could not copy files from one drive to the other and my backup software has been disabled. I have reinstalled Windows to solve problems. Scans of my files from backup using Quick Heal has revealed the presence of Trojan.Gen, who may have let in some other bad guys. I can now access the update site.

Original title: unable to automatically update important updates.

There is no error message when I open Control Panel > system and security > Windows Update > change settings.

On this page, that I can't even select or choose other important updates options.

In addition, on top of the same page, there is information highlighted: "some settings are managed by your system administrator."

I already tried troubleshooting, but it was useless for this problem.

    Hi Said,

It seems that you use Windows 8. You will not be able to access the Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc) If you use Windows 8. Group Policy Editor can have access on Windows 8 Pro/Enterprise edition of Windows 8.

  • Unable to access Windows Update HP Pavilion dm4 Windows 7 64 bit

My setting for Windows Update has always been - automatic.  When I realized that the update had done nothing since April, I tried an update manually and repeatedly getting the message: ' Windows Update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running. "  You may have to restart your computer", I restarted, tried MS 'FixIt' - no change.   64-bit HP Pavilion dm4 window 7

Paul - the link was not one I wanted to try. I found this fix on the Forum of MS response:

Go to Control Panel > click on Windows Update

    Click change settings (upper-left)

under updates, click on the drop down arrow

    Click never check updates

    Press OK

    Close the Control Panel window

Then the closing session and Re-start Windows fresh.

When you're ready, go back into the Control Panel > click on Windows Update

    Click on change settings (upper-left)

under updates, click on the drop down arrow

Now make the choice you need for automatic updates

    Press OK when done

    Close the Control Panel window

Then make a fresh visit to Windows Update.

If you have already tried the fixes that didn't work, the foregoing can at least get a point better, "but with update errors then you can do a system restore.  I did mine to the last point of "automatic system restore" which was 31/05/12.

It worked for me and I spent 2.5 hours installing all missed updates.  My computer works better when it is new!

  • XP PRO SP3 - cannot access windows updates

Currently, I have restored to the factory setting on a laptop computer windows XP Professional and was able to download and install service pack 3. I also downloaded Explorer 8 - he kept if overwrite then I uninstalled and am on Explorer 7. Now, I can not access windows updates. I get the site and the status says done but I have an empty window. I also have problems with other programs - it seem to not be able to access a file that is on my computer. I was hoping that longer running updates could fix my problem. Help, please

I would recommend from square one again. This time, do exactly as follows:

Personal data backup (which none should be considered 100% reliable at this point) then format the HARD disk and do a clean install of Windows.  Please note that a repair installation (upgrade AKA on-site) will NOT fix it!

HOW to do a clean install of Windows XP: see method 1 and http://michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html#steps in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/978307

Once installed the clean, you will have the equivalent of a "new computer" in order to take care of everything on the next page before connecting the machine to the internet or a local network (i.e. other computers) and before using a USB or SD card that is not brand new, or has not been freshly formattedotherwise:

NB: No matter what Norton or McAfee free trial which is preinstalled on the computer when you bought will be reinstalled (but invalid) when Windows is reinstalled. You MUST uninstall the trial for free and download/run the appropriate removal tool before installing updates, Service Packs Windows or IE upgrades and before installing your new anti-virus application (which will require WinXP SP3 must be installed).
