Unable to connect the laptop to the printer in a home network

I just installed a HP Pavilion dv4 laptop, running windows 7 (64 k) and a router Linksys E-1000 of wireles in my home network, consisting of an HP pavilion a6150y desktop, running MS Vista Edition home premium (32 K), to which a HP Photosmart C4280 printer is connected via a USB port. All internet and e-mail functions work perfectly across the home network, except that I can't print from the laptop to the printer. I understand that the C4280 should function as a print server through the Desktop, but I can't print from the laptop. Heterogeneous operating systems cause inability to print from the laptop? Any suggestions?  The laptop has no problems printing to the C4280 when connected directly via a USB cable to the printer.
Troubleshooting: I ran across the network installation procedure, but nothing helped. The printer has never worked since installation of network components House (e-100 of Linksys and the HP dv4 laptop) anyone can propose a solution?

First of all, you need to set file/printer sharing and share the printer. If you have already done this and can successfully transfer a file both ways between the two systems, ignore the information of networking at the end of this post. Then you download from the site Web of HP for Windows 7 64-bit print drivers.

http://welcome.HP.com/country/us/en/support_task.html

Install the printer on Windows 7 computer and it should be considered during the installation procedure. If it isn't, then install the printer as a local printer instead. To do this:

Go to the computer to which the printer is connected. Note the name of the computer that you will get to the control panel > system > computer name. Now in the Panel, go to the printers. Find the printer in question, right-click, and then click Properties. Note the name of the share. Of course you must have already set up file sharing / print on all computers involved and share the printer.

Now, go to the remote computer to which you want to add the printer. Control Panel > printers > add printer

Click Add a local printer. Click on create a new port. The default value in the drop-down list box is Local Port. Don't change that. Click Next. A dialog box appears for you request that you enter a port name. Type in the \\FullComputername\SharedPrintername

ex: \\mycomputer\HPDJ (that's why you wrote the names of computer and printer in the first step)

Click Next. In the manufacturers list, select the correct printer manufacturer and the correct printer model in the Printers list. Under "do you want to use this printer as default printer select"Yes"(if you do!). and click Next. When asked to print a test page, select 'Yes', then finish.

If you have not already created your LAN file/printer sharing:

Problems sharing files between computers on a network are usually caused by 1) a misconfigured firewall or a firewall neglected (including a dynamic firewall in a virtual private network); or (2) inadvertently run two firewalls such as the firewall of Windows and a third-party firewall. and/or (3) do not have accounts to the same users and passwords on all computers in the workgroup. (4) tries to create actions where the operating system does not.

The Windows 7 network type must be on "Home" or "work". The type of Windows Vista network must be on "private". "Public" is for when you are connected to an Internet connection 'foreign' as an Internet café, at Starbucks or a hotel, etc. In Windows 7, go to control panel > everything in Control Panel > network and sharing Center. Click on "change the advanced sharing settings. You don't want to use the residential group unless you have all Windows 7 machines. If you do and you want to use the homegroup, see Windows 7 Help & Support. Otherwise, in sharing advanced:

Discovery of plug in the network
Open the files and printers sharing
Turn on the sharing section Public folder sharing
Plug the password protected sharing

In Vista, turn on password protected sharing.

A. configure the firewall on all machines to allow traffic to local area network (LAN) as being approved. With the Windows Firewall, turning on window file sharing and printer as the above will take care of that for you. In XP, you can run the Network Setup Wizard or just enable file sharing / print in the Windows XP firewall exceptions. If you are not running a third-party firewall or you have an antivirus/security with its own firewall component program, then you're fine.  With a third-party firewall, I usually set up the allocation of LAN with an IP address range. E.g. would be 192.168.1.0 - 192.168.1.254. Obviously you would substitute your correct subnet. Refer to the safety of any third party program or the user forums for how to correctly configure its firewall. Do not run more than one firewall. DON'T STOP FIREWALLS; CONFIGURE THEM CORRECTLY.

(B) to facilitate the Organization, put all computers in the same workgroup. This is done from the System applet in Control Panel, the computer name tab.

C. create the counterpart of the user accounts and passwords on all machines. You do not need to be logged into the same account on all machines and assigned to each user account passwords can be different; accounts/passwords just need to exist and to match on all machines. DO NOT NEGLECT TO CREATE PASSWORDS, EVEN IF ONLY OF SIMPLE. If you want a machine to boot directly to the desktop (a particular user account) for convenience, you can do this:

Start > Search box > type: netplwiz [Enter]
Click continue (or provide an administrator password) when you are prompted by UAC

Uncheck "users must enter a user name and password to use this computer". Select a user account to connect automatically by clicking on the account you want to highlight and press OK. Enter the password for this user account (when it exists) when you are prompted. Leave blank if there is no password (null).

XP - set up Windows to automatically connect (MVP Ramesh) -http://windowsxp.mvps.org/Autologon.htm

D. Si one or more of the computers on your network are XP Pro or Media Center, turn off Simple file sharing (Folder Options > view tab).

E. create share as you wish. In Windows 7 I usually share the Desktop of the user and the Public directory.

For step 4 you have not need must be connected to the printer. As long as the printer is already connected by cable to the router it will be accessible wirelessly on the two computers during the installation of the software.

  • Unable to connect my laptop XP Prof on printer Officejet J6450 AIO usb (in network)

Due to some problems of scanning, I have reinstalled my AIO on my USB port of office instead of the old Dell (Windows 7-64) ethernet link. However, I'm unable to connect from my laptop with XP Pro. I downloaded and installed the latest version of the software of full J6450 and can do a test print, but cannot access the printer through the center of Solution, that's why the scanner and other features are not available from the laptop. Thanks for responding. The error was 'the scan cannot be performed because another program or computer uses... ". "The w/l installation was successful, after that several unsuccessful attempts. I thought I could do a no-w/l installation, but it is just as well, because I don't often print the laptop anyway, so I can keep the w/l off on the router function until I need to print from the laptop.

    Hi John,

Thanks for the post. I understand that you are unable to connect the WD external drive.

I imagine the inconvenience that you are experiencing. I will definitely help you with this.

To help you suggest several steps to solve the problem, I would appreciate it if you could answer the following questions:

    1. you receive an error code or message?

    2. have you made any recent hardware or exchange of software on your computer before the show?

3 have you tried to connect the external hard drive on another USB port?

Please follow the methods and mark the question below:

    Method 1:

I suggest you to run the Microsoft Fix It from the link below.

Hardware devices do not work or are not detected in Windows:

    http://support.Microsoft.com/mats/hardware_device_problems/en-us

    Method 2:

Uninstall and reinstall the USB drivers.

You can check after uninstalling and reinstalling USB drivers if you are able to connect. You can disconnect all USB devices and then perform the following steps:

    a. Click Start and then click Control Panel.

    b. click System and Maintenance, click System and then click on Device Manager.

Note: If the control panel is in Classic view, double-click System, and then click Device Manager.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password, or click on allow.

    c. in the Device Manager, double-click to expand the "USB Bus controllers", right click on the controller host, click "Uninstall" and click "OK".

Check that if at all, there is an exclamation point on the pilot, it suggests problems with the installed driver.

    d. Repeat step 2 to uninstall all items under 'USB Bus controllers'.

Then, restart your computer and Windows will automatically reinstall all USB controllers.

Note: Connect USB devices to the computer once the drivers of conflict are uninstalled, and once the computer is restarted.

If you are still having the same problem then you can check the device USB drivers updated using windows update.

  • HP Photosmart B109: cannot connect the printer to the wireless network

I have some setting wrong my printer for wireless printing. It has worked well in the past, but with my new macbook air - this isn't.

I can't access the function where to add the printer to the wireless network (my router does not support WPS so his password WPA).

I remember setting this up on a PC - easy with the driver provided by HP, but on the Mac, the configuration tool does not appear to be a function where I add the printer to the wireless network - and HP did not provide a driver, because it is supposed to work with the mac built-in software.

The manual says only: "follow the instructions on the screen", but the printer does not have instructions on how to connect - on-screen tests, only that it is connected...

Anyone who knows how to add the printer to a wireless network?

    Hello @Joahkim!

    Welcome to the HP community!

I understand that you have a problem to set up all-in-one printer wireless HP Photosmart (B109n) with your new MacBook Air OS x 10.10. I want to help you with this.

Have you changed your router or your password since the MacBook Air? If this is not the case, your printer can still be connected to the network and the trickiest part of that place will be done for us already.

We will print a Network Configuration report to see if it is connected:

    • On the Control Panel, press the button next to Scan. The Scan/Wireless menu.
  • OfficeJet Pro 8500 - no USB or Ethernet cable to connect the printer to the computer?

I'm just trying to set up my new printer Officejet Pro 8500 Wireless.  I got to the step of installing the software, but there seems to be no cable supplied to connect the printer to my computer.

I can't currently connect via radio that I expect a new wireless router be delivered.  Is this the way onlt connection other than buying a separate USB or Ethernet cable?

    Help, please.

Ethernet and USB cables are not usually provided with most of the printers that you need to choose a cable with a length of favourabel to you. You can go to a hardware/computer store and buy a USB A-to-B cable. I'll post a picture of the end of cable just to clear any confusion.

    any ideas? Thank you

    Hi BoleczekNieduzy,

    Welcome to the HP Forums.

I see that you have any questions, set up the printer on the network cable and even the wireless network.
I will do my best to help you with this problem.

    Cycle power to the router.

First, we must restore the defaults on the printer.

Press the OK button on the printer, go to the service, and then select restore default settings.

Print a printer configuration page to make sure that the IP address and SSID are erased.

    Print a Configuration report.

    Select the method.

    Uninstall the printer software.
Insert the software CD into the CD drive.
    Follow the on-screen instructions.

When you are prompted, select the connection through the wireless network.

If you're still having problems, restore the default values and follow this method:

Connect the printer to the router with an Ethernet cable.
Wait about 1 minute and the printer must have a valid IP address.
Print the configuration page to get the IP address of the printer.
Type the IP address in the address bar of Internet Explorer which should open the printer's built-in web services page.
    Installing wireless over here now.
Click the networking, wireless on the left, fill in information about the network and apply the settings.
After the confirmation, then disconnect the Ethernet cable.
Now you should have a flashing light on the printer in 1 minute wireless about.

    Run the installation again.

I have provided a document to configure the wireless connection, or you can follow my different methods provided.

Installation of the software of the printer on a wireless network or network (Ethernet) cable.

If the Wireless does not always connect, to view these settings on the router.

You have a double router broadband?
If it is set to 5 GHZ network, you may need to change to 2.4 GHZ. (rename the 5 GHz or turn it off)
The WPA key setting must be on AES to work properly not TKIP.
If it is set to the 64-bit encryption, then change it to 128-bit.
    Multi flow must be enabled.
Router firewall must be open for printer ports.
If you have Mac filtering give you printer hardware to meet the needs of the configuration page.

Please let me know if this is not the problem.

    Have a great day.
    Thank you.

The code you enter is likely to set up ePrint for the printer address.  Once this has been done it is not necessary to do it again.

An alternative is that the laptop is connected directly to the printer with direct wireless wireless.  In this case, you will need to disconnect the laptop computer from the printer to use the other laptop.

A better configuration would be to connect the printer to your router wither wireless or cable LAN cable.  It would give the IP address which you can find by pressing the front panel of the printer to the printer (if the printer is in mode "sleep"), then tap the wireless at the bottom of the screen.  This will bring up the LAN wireless status, where you can find the IP address of the printer.

You should be able to set up the printer with the driver available at http://www.hp.com/go/toolsinstallation wizard.
