Using the F8 method:

  4. Then press enter on your keyboard to start mode without failure of Vista.

    Saturday night as I was closing my computer a windows automatic update came and installed before I could turn it off.     If so, please do and do a system restore, if no help, run the Microsoft Support tutorial below.

    If you don't have another admin account, go into safe mode.
    Here's how to get safe mode:

    First line of action is to do a system restore, if you remember a 'good' date when you didn't have a problem. Use this good date as your restore point.
    Do and go to safe mode to restore your system:
    Here's how to get safe mode:

    System Restore:
    Start button > Search box, type system restore > press the Enter key > uac prompt > click on choose a different restore point > next > select dates as your restore point, until the click > next > finish

    This error can occur if the group policy setting "do not connect to users with temporary profiles" is configured.

    To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

    1 delete the profile by using the computer properties dialog box. To do this, follow these steps:

    a. Click Start, right-click computer and then click Properties.
    b. click on change settings.
    c. in the System Properties dialog box, click the Advanced tab.
    d. under user profiles, click settings.
    e. in the user profiles dialog box, select the profile you want to delete, click on remove and then click OK.
     
    2. Click Start, type regedit in the start search box and then press ENTER.

    3. Locate, and then expand the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList

    4 right-click the SID that you want to delete and then click on remove.

    5 log on to the computer and create a new profile.

    One of the fastest ways did a system restore to a date prior to the issue. Start in Safe Mode - once in safe mode, start / all programs, accessories, system to System Restore tools. Choose a restore date.

    Try typing F8 at startup and in the list of Boot selections, select Mode safe using ARROW top to go there > and then press ENTER.

    Try a restore of the system once, to choose a Restore Point prior to your problem...

    Difficulty of a corrupted user profile

    You can try the following.

    Shut down the laptop.  Tap away at f8 that you start the laptop to enter the Windows Recovery Console.  Use the arrow keys to select Safe mode and press ENTER.  If windows will load in this mode, on the Start Menu, click principally made programs, click Accessories, click System Tools and run the system restore.  Choose a restore point at least 24 hours prior to the issue of logon and then proceed to the restoration.  When you are finished, Windows will restart as normal in order to check if you can now connect correctly.

    Another option if the above does not help is as follows.

    Shut down the laptop.  Tap away at f8 that you start the laptop to enter the Windows Recovery Console.  Use the arrow keys to select "Start using last good known Configuration" and press ENTER.

    "Hi we seem to have almost exactly the same problem (on portable House my wife running Windows Vista Home Premium) and accessible via a wireless connection at home)." The only difference is that she receives the message 'the Group Policy Client service has no logon' every time she enters her password, to attempt to gain access to his laptop. We are sure that his password has not changed by mistake (or one of our children!), as a message "the user name or password is incorrect" appears if the wrong password.  We can't even get to the start ORB / search bar.
