  If you reinstall Windows until the end of cycle, you will get the benefit as shown in the link. The best way is to download and save Service packs for XP that will cover more updates, or you can make a note of the update currently installed in the computer and manually download as backup.

  The windows 7 ultimate key reported as checked and I was receiving all the Microsoft updates on this computer for the last 3 years.

  Try to upgrade to windows 8 pro to windows 7.  Have you tried the troubleshooting and still nothing.  Spent 2.5 hours on the phone with tier 2 support last night and they did everything that I had already tried and nothing.  I tried the following

  This problem is usually caused if you plug in external devices other than the mouse and keyboard, or if there is no program third party or apps that blocks the update settings. I would like to know some information about this problem so that we can help you further.

  1. have you connected external devices other than the mouse or keyboard?

  2 have you tried to install/check updates after a reboot?

  3. what security software is installed on your computer?

  I would suggest trying the following methods and check if it works for you.

  Method 1:

  If you connect the external devices other than the keyboard and mouse, then try to disconnect if and check if you are able to install/check updates.

  Method 2:

  Put the computer in a clean boot state, and check if the problem persists. Clean boot helps you disable all non-Microsoft services, so that we can check which third party/app program is causing this problem.

  How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7 or Windows 8 / 8.1:

  I show no update Windows since July 2013.  Whenever I have check I get a download of update, but during the installation I get 'impossible '. Code: 80070BC9 and others. No updates installed after KB2864629. This time, it's KB2871777 and KB2871690.   KB2871690 download and install 'Successful' but after reboot back to the previous setting.  The version is Windows 8 Pro 64 Bit. I can't upgrade to windows Pro 8.1 until the windows updates are installed.
