  What happens when it stops it is have a Sata driver. It is on the drivers cd you received with your computer. You can also start the computer and press F2 to enter the bios. From there down to Configuration system - SATA Operation and change this to ATA. It is located to AHCI. Save the changes and restart the installation. Once you have loaded Windows and drivers installed, you will need to go back to AHCI.

  If I read this correctly, you have a portable computer that do not have an operating system on it.  You try to install Vista and get the error.
  You've restarted the Vista installation?  So then you get the same error? If you have tried to install more than once and continue to receive this error, check that the laptop is capable of Vista?  You may need to check with the manufacturer of the laptop to see if it is able to support Vista.   I had a problem with my laptop Acer Extensa 5230th. It was not started and so I took for Matech computers.  They diagnosed as having a mechanical drive problem.  So they replaced the drive and installed a more recent version of windows vista on.  Note: I haven't bought a new copy of vista family premium, he said he was going to reinstall vista.  It had windows Vista Home Basic, it has installed vista Home premium and said that he had validated by call from windows, but I'm suspicious because I don't think you can use a base of windows key to validate Home premium!  It means that he has put on an illegal version on windows or used the genuine key that came with the laptop.

  Select Properties

  To open system properties:

  (b) click on properties
