Uninstalling iTunes took my DVD/CD drive - seeks advice

Hello. It is on an Acer Aspire 5520-5912 laptop running Vista SP1. Last week, I uninstalled iTunes because I do not use it and I wanted to reclaim the disk space. Since then, my built-in DVD/CD player is not recognized by Windows. It does not appear in computer or iTunes. I tried to / uninstall iTunes 8 several times as well as the latest drivers of gear. I tried the registry changes on the "UpperFilters" key You can see an overview of the current register here:

http://www.mikeseyes.com/computers

Is there anything else I can try? Reformat my PC and install a fresh copy of Windows seem unimaginable today. The drive is an integrated DVD-Super Multi drive. Please help if you can.

Thank you.

    Hello AF6AY,

Have you tried to uninstall the dvd via the Device Manager drive then restart PC to see if Windows reinstalls? You can do it. If the problem is still there, can give a try? It is a quick easy fix from Microsoft, here is the link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060. You need to uninstall all third-party software (example: Roxio, Nero, or iTunes) from your computer before you make this correction. After you restart, you can reinstall your software and try again to see if that solves your problem. Otherwise, it could be a bad optical drive. Hope this helps you. Let us know anyway. Make it a great day!

  • Windows 7 Home premium without recognizing the LG DVD RAM drive

Hello. My computer suddenly stopped recognizing my LG DVD RAM (LG GH22NS50) drive and so I can't play or download anything on the disc! The only thing I did recently was (against-heart/foolishly?) to update iTunes! I did the driver check etc, but nothing seems to happen - Windows 7 tells me the drive has the current driver etc. I tried to uninstall the driver and the drive, then only reinstall - go!
Various forums I've seen seem to indicate that a registry problem can be the problem - after a software change? Advice please the reader went to works perfectly to be "Persona Non Grata" on my system!

    Hi Bren,

This issue would have occurred after you installed, uninstalled or updated a program.

Try the steps in the following article and check:

Your CD or DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows or other programs

Registry warning: the following steps include changing the system registry. However, serious problems can occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you proceed with caution. For added protection, back up the registry before you edit it. Then you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. • Satellite A210-12U - DVD RW drive will recognize the DVD but no CD

I have a laptop Toshiba Satellite of 4 years (model: A210-12U) that I recently restored using the recovery CD - it running Vista SP2.

Please bear with me as this may be an ish story, but it helps to explain my problem.
Around a year ago, a virus has made its way onto my laptop and almost destroyed the BONE - I consider myself to be fairly knowledgeable software-wise after studying at the College and began the long process of trying to resolve my laptop without using the recovery CD.

It was a patch job, but after a month or two, I had it works again and it was fine for a period of a few months or so, before, I noticed that my DVD RW drive would no longer read or burn CDs. I spent hours trawling internet forums to help without a bit of luck and was eventually convinced that it was a hardware problem.

As I needed to use a CD burner, my cousin gave me his DVD - RW USB drive and it did not work, which means that the logic suggested that it wasn't a physical problem with the drive, rather that it was most likely a problem with the registry/OS. It was not surprising given that I had done a basic work patch following the infection by the virus a few months earlier.

After becoming more and more frustrated with my laptop in general, I backed up my data on a portable hard drive and used the recovery CD that came with my laptop. The laptop started the CD when he was outside of the OS (according to the instructions that came with it) and restored all of the computer to its original state (and solve many of the problems that have been caused by the virus in the process).

I have spent the last week re - install programs, the copy of backdata etc. and was trying to install a software on a CD today, when I noticed that the laptop had difficulties to access the disk. Explorer Windows knows that the drive is there; It is listed in 'My Computer' and will also be the small CD icon alongside the pointer when it tries to load the CD - suggesting that he knows that there is a CD in there.

However, the drive will still read DVD that suggests, it could be a physical problem with the drive itself (I read somewhere on the laser need to change its angle accordingly during playback of CDs and DVDs). I have a question though, what the computer was able to read the recovery CD when I was being a complete restoration (and that she felt the same difficulties of CD playback in Windows before restoration).

I tried all the suggested methods in similar posts on this forum - Microsoft Fix It, uninstall the drivers etc nothing helps... So yes, I am a little confused and wonder if anyone can help?

The DVD RW drive is listed in Device Manager as HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T20N ATA Device.

    Thank you
    Ben

    Hi Ben

In my opinion, this is material junk. You're right about the position of the objective. It needs to be calibrated for CDs and DVDs. If the optical disc drive cannot read one of these media in general, it can be problem of lens calibration.

To be honest sides for this old A210 are cheap and more. I advise you to buy a new or used one on eBay. Exchange and test functionality.
To be honest I don't believe there is a trick that can help you get it working again.

I had this problem before, but I didn't the first time, it's the webcam that has caused the problem. It s webcam trust wb - 1400T. .. .Please help me... I think it is the driver, but I don't know how to fix it.

    Hi mate

    > I installed a webcam, and it made my DVD - rom drive does not not with all drives
To be honest I have never seen that the webcam may have a negative influence on the internal CD/DVD drive.
I see really no connection between the webcam and ODD... very strange
Do you get any error messages?

    Anyway, in my opinion, you should try these solution ideas;

    (1) remove the drive from the Device Manager CD/DVD and restart the laptop. After restarting again the operating system should recognize the STRANGE and should re-install the drivers.

    2) access the registry and delete the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters completely from the following registry key values:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\ {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
    .. then restart the laptop.

    (3) download and install the tool freeware "CCleaner". This tool repairs registry and solves several problems in System.

If this does not work, then the new installation of the OS would be wise to check if the problem could be related to a software problem.

    Hi James,

First, try the automated Microsoft fixit at the link below.

    http://support.Microsoft.com/mats/cd_dvd_drive_problems/en-us

Check if the drive works now.

If it still does not work, click on the Menu start, open the all programs, open accessories, right-click on command prompt and select "run as Administrator".  In at the prompt, type the following command and press ENTER.

sfc/scannow                (Note that there is a space between sfc and /)

Let the entire process, then the output type and press ENTER.

Then, click on the Start Menu, open Control Panel and click Device Manager.  Click to open the CD/DVD-ROM drives.  Right-click on the drive and choose uninstall.  Do not delete if requested drivers.  When the device has been uninstalled click the icon 'Search for hardware changes' (usually just below help in the toolbar).  Let windows reinstall the disc and see if it works now.
