Windows Update - Code 646 error?
Everytime I turn on my laptop, I have a little message that says: I have an update - so I click to install it and it gives me the same error code every time. Error code 646. This update is for security for Microsoft Works 9. The funny thing is, when I turn my laptop libere‑moi said it is necessary to install the update, but how can this be if it does not first place? Does anyone else have this problem?... and if so, how I eliminate it?
Try this:

23 Dec received automatic update message. I waited until I was ready to disconnect so that my system would automatically install before disconnecting completely. Overnight updates updated where still there. So I tried to install them one at a time. Could not get one of them to install. After each failed attempt I kept getting the same result... 646 ERROR CODE...

update of security K97621 code 646 error
My computer keeps trying to install the update of security K97621. The status of the failed instalation & details of the error are code 646
Sorry, you have problems getting your patches installed. I have a number of things for you to look at. First of all, your Background Intelligent Transfer Services set to Automaticand started and Windows Update ? They both should be started. You can check these settings by typing services.msc in the search box of the start menu.
Sometimes in order to get patches to install correctly, you must perform these tasks manually.
(1) Download Center to visit Microsoft: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/default.aspx.
(2) missing a number search for the update code that begins with the letters "KB" and followed by a set of numbers (i.e. KB979309) - number you give above.
3) click on the link for the download and then click on download and run. You must accept the agreement, and then click continue.
(4) run the update from Microsoft, click find updates. If all goes well, it will show that you are completely patched. If this does not work, try to run the Microsoft OneCare safety scanner. Sometimes it will solve problems of hidden registry, or can clear the virus that can prevent the installation of the patches: http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/whatsnew.htm. Click full service scan, and then Quick scan (full scan takes a long time to complete). Try the patches.

Code 646 error when updated Vista Home for my Office Home and Student 2007 for KB976321.
I have Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 2. System type 32-bit operating system. KB976321 will not update. I have Office home and Student 2007. Any suggestions?
Once from time to time, you must manually install the patches. Have you tried to download and run the patch manually (without using Windows Update)?
If not, you can download the patch here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=160ad53e-6475-4550-90c2-444e4abea730. Clickk download and then run. You must accept the agreement, then click on continue. After installing, restart Microsoft Update and click find updates.
