Hi mgregurich,

1. open Device Manager by clicking the Start button, click on the Control Panel, clicking system and Maintenance, and then clicking Device Manager.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Step 3:  Unplug the power and USB (universal serial bus), wait for a while and connect the external hard drive to another USB port and check.
Also, connect the external hard drive on another computer and test if it works fine.

If the problem persists,

Step 4: Replace the USB controllers.

First of all, please disconnect all USB devices and then perform the following steps:

1. click on 'Start', type device manager in the search bar and press "Enter." If necessary, click on continue.

Then, restart your computer and windows vista will automatically reinstall all USB controllers.

  • External hard drive USB on Time Capsule

    Hello

I have an external USB hard disk and plug it into the USB port of my Airport Time Capsule makes it accessible wireless (if on the sidebar of the window under the section 'sharing' I click on the Time Capsule to enter airport name next to his record 'data', I also have a folder with the name of my USB HD and I can access).

Now the problem. I have a USB external hard drive, I can access normally connect my iMac or iBook portUSB one, but, if connected to the time Capsule... nothing happens.

So there must be a difference in the two external hard drive. What a difference creates the problem, why and what I can do is my question.

    Can someone help me?

So far, here is what I found to be the similarities and differences:

The two serial ATA, 2 to, partition GUID mapped external USB hard drive.

In disk utility, one that is visible on the Time Capsule is displayed as 'external HARD disk support' physical disk with OS X extended physical volume. One who isn't appears as physical disk 'external media' with logic extended OS X volume.

    Hi Ranmaboy,

I understand you have two external hard drives USB that you want to connect to your airport Time Capsule via USB, but one who is not recognized by the Capsule from the airport. Given that this player connects to your iMac without problem, I would recommend that you backup all data stored on the disk, and then follow the steps here to re - format the drive using disk utility:

Backup disks, you can use with Time Machine - Apple Support

Format a drive connected to an AirPort Extreme 802.11ac or Time Capsule

If you are using an AirPort Extreme 802.11ac or Time Capsule, you can connect an external drive to the USB port on these devices for use with Time Machine. Follow these steps to reformat the hard disk in the first place, it is ready for use.

    1. Connect the hard drive to a USB port on your Mac.
    2. Open disk utility.
    3. On the left side of the disk utility window, select your external drive (or one of its partitions).
    4. Click the delete or delete button on the toolbar.
    5. On the Format menu, choose Mac OS extended (journaled).
    6. Type a name for your drive, and then click clear.
    7. After that the drive is deleted, close the disk utility window.

Once the disk has been reformatted, try to connect this back to the airport Time Capsule to see if it is now recognized.

Have a great rest of your day!

  • How can I copy all the 18 000 pictures on my imac to an external hard drive to give to my daughter and also keep on the imac

How can I copy all the 18 000 pictures on my imac to an external hard drive to give to my daughter and keep them all on my imac

Your daughter have a Mac and use Photos? If so just copy your library of Photos to SMT, it must be formatted OS X Extended (journaled) with the defined property is ignored. Then she can use the SMT library or copy it on his Mac.

If she doesn't have a Mac do the following:

1 - Create a new folder on the external drive.

2 - Select all photos in the library (in the window of Photos).

    3. Select the file ➙ ➙ export export Original unmodified for XXXXX items menu option.

    4. in the format of subfolder select Export window = name of the time

    5. in the next window, select the folder that you created on the external drive as the destination of export and export all your photos to this. Photos at every moment in your photo library will be put in a folder with the date of that moment and this issue will be put on the EHD in the folder that you created.

Primarily for backup purposes, I have connected via USB, a new external hard drive to my Compaq Presario (using Windows 7) but I don't see how to access or use. Removal and replacement of the plug USB produce noise sound from the PC that I expect.  Start/computer shows no signs of the element. Start/devices and printers displays an icon for the item, but clicking on it gives no response.   Where should I go from here?

  • External hard drive USB, not received a drive letter in Vista 64-Bit

I do not use my BeyondMicro 160 G external hard drive a lot just to make occasional backups, well this time was different.  I have powered the drive, plugged the USB cable into my PC and normal tone was heard, but NO drive letter is assigned to the drive.  In fact I couldn't find anywhere in my computer that the unit was even detected.  I Visa Ultimate 64-bit, I tried to uninstall the drivers in the Device Manager and rebooted and still no external drive, any suggestions?

    Konala Hello,

    Thank you for your response.

If the external hard drive not detected below are some steps to solve the problem:

You can check if the device is compatible with Windows Vista by visiting the Windows Vista Compatibility Center, which includes a list of drivers, hardware and applications that are compatible with Windows Vista.

For reference, the link to the Windows Vista Compatibility Center is included below:

Then, if the external hard drive is not detected in Device Manager, please check if the external drive is detected in the management of the computer:

You can check this by going to: start then click on computer
When it is connected and switched on, the drive should appear as a drive letter on the computer (ie: drive E:, F: or another letter.) An Autorun window may also appear if the drive is detected.

If the external drive does not appear, please check the following:

    · Check the power supply and check if it works normally.
    · Check the wiring and check that the USB cable is plugged into a port. You can also try another USB port.
    · Check disk management to see if the drive is detected it:

    2. check the upper and lower windows to find if the drive is detected.

If the external hard drive is not detected, try to connect the external drive to another PC to check if the unit is working normally.

Then please check if Windows Vista Service Pack 1 is installed currently.  If WVSP1 is not installed, you can try to install this service pack and check if the problem still persists.

For reference, the link below contains information. about how to obtain the latest Windows Vista service pack:

Title: Maxtor OneTouch II 300 GB USB/FireWire external hard drive of origin

  • External hard drive USB recognized as a drive in Windows 7

My external drive was not functiononing, so I formatted it recently. I gave him a normal speed format, using windows only. It is an external hard drive, 256 GB, connected via USB 2.0, formatted to NTFS.
After it was over, windows began to recognize the local drive, making it impossible for me to remove it safely (he does not give me the opportunity to do).
My concern is that it can affect some of my files if I just unplug the unit. I googled but didn't find any results that worked for me.
Any ideas for what to do? I'm not really good at these things. but I really need my perfectly functional hard drive.

It is normal for hard drives, they are USB drives physically internal or external, and the "Local Disk".

    • Open the Device Manager (start, type "Device Manager" (without the quotes) in the search box, press enter)
    • Expand the category of "hard drives".
    • Right-click on your external drive and choose 'properties '.
    • Click on the tab 'Strategies '.

The default value for the drives connected by USB is 'Fast moving' which, as the option explains "disables the cache on the device and in the entry window, but you can disconnect the device safely without using the safely remove hardware notification icon."

Or you can choose the "Best Performance" which "allows the cache in Windows for writing, but you must use the remove hardware notification icon to disconnect the device safely."

Make your choice, click OK, and're you good to go.

    Hello

I consider burning this external hard drive (PX1273E - 1 40) and would like to know if the disk inside has a SATA interface or an IDE interface, in the case of the latter in I decide to open, take the drive and connect it to the computer internally.

    Anyone know this information?

    Thank you.

    Hello

Unfortunately, I didn't find all of the information on the interface type of the enclosure.
In my opinion, it could be an IDE interface but I m not100% sure.

But never fear, you can buy a 3rd party SATA to IDE adapter and was able to connect the HARD drive if it will support different interfaces.
