  This morning my laptop was running slowly and I executed a forced shutdown. When you turn on the computer, I kept getting a blue screen with the error message "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME". All the options I tried met the same fate. I have the recovery disk and tried to use it to fix the system. However, after stopping race/spinning drive, only a black screen remained and remained it up to with no progress for more than 3 minutes more. I don't remember what is the code, but I'll take a look later, when I try again with the recovery disc to attempt to repair the system. I have looked through all the answers to previous questions to the BSoD Unmountable Boot Volume error and see if it is of help.

  Are there suggestions more with this issue? I try to keep spending as cheap as possible. Thank you.

  Hi all

  New user, first post - after problem, of course.

  I have a Thinkpad R61 with Windows XP on it.  (SP2 or SP3, not sure).  Worked without problem for years, and then the other day I got the dreaded "unmountable boot volume" error and it would not start.

  No problem - I have reboot, hit the ThinkVantage button, then press F11 to use the R & R hidden on a separate hard disk partition... I get the black screen with progress bar big, okay, then a blue screen... then nothing.  Hang up and sits there.  I've told about 5 times now.

  No problem! -J' was smart enough to make a CD R & R defined earlier.  The main R & R disc in the CD drive, turn on the machine, the ThinkPad, F12 button this time choose to boot from the CD... much activity follows and once more, I get the black screen with progress bar big.  It takes a lot more time then I get the blue screen - BUT - he took the extra step to display the "ThinkVantage Rescue & Recovery 4" with the image of lifejacket.

  Excellent, I thing - but it crashes then it.  He's here.  No disk activity.  No key won't do anything.

  I can't find any thread here or on any other forum with this particular issue.

  Am I fubar?  Or is there something else I can do?

  Is the drive recognized in the BIOS, there was an entry in the startup list against HDD0?

  No matter what it projected in BIOS / boot list or not, the first thing I would do is to reinstall the hard drive and see if that helps, maybe with the time he lost contact to the Jack from the motherboard. If you are unsure how to do this you can find on the R61 movie site.

  The next thing I would do is run a check on a cd bootable hard drive Diagnostics, these can be downloaded from websites of all manufacturers drive HARD for example Hitachi Drive Fitness Test.  Maybe it's that the reader simply went bad after all these years of work.

  You can contact the manufacturer of your computer to set the boot sequence so that you can boot from the installation disc. Follow this link and check if the problem persists.

  I read in some sites 'recover using xp disk', my laptop was bought with xp was preinstalled and I don't have a recovery disk.

  I agree with Guybrush. The error seems to be related to the boot file system is defective and new resettlement could help.

  As we have already mentioned, the Toshiba Recovery CD could be controlled using the adresse_web above.
  If you are owner of an old series of laptop then the recovery CD could be ordered in the local ASP.

  But generally, you can use a Microsoft operating system CD too.
  You could install windows using this CD and all Toshiba drivers can be downloaded from the Toshiba driver page.

  Hmm, the volume not mountable startup error message appears especially if the HARD drive may not be recognized during initialization. Why? Well, maybe the HARD drive failures or the master boot record is defective!

  If you don t want to recover the laptop, you can try to boot from the XP CD (C press immediately after switching on the laptop) and to start the repair console.

  In the repair console, you can use the command chkdsk/p and after that, you could fix the disk main boot using the fixboot command or / and fixmbr.

  If this does not help, the new installation of the OS is that you as a last resort.

  PS: If you want to save the data you can try to remove the HARD drive and try to connect it via external USB HDD controller to another computer.

  If you are still under warranty, contact your retailer or HP local store and get a replacement hard drive that you can change yourself or have it sent service.

  If you have a competent friend IT, you may be able to recover some data on the computer.

  I have a Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop and while I turned on my laptop yesterday, I received this error went to blue screen during the loading of the Windows logo screen.   My G20 starts, I get the standard screen of Windows XP, then a vile blue screen of death, then a message "unmountable boot volume" still more hideous. The systems recovery disc is not an option because he wants to clean up the entire disk.

  Is there a software I can burn it to a cd, which will allow me to start and run a type scandisk/chkdsk program to try to repair the drive? I have fond memories of the Norton Utilities programs type which unfortunately seems to have disappeared.
