  • "NTVDM. EXE has encountered a problem and needs to close"error after installing the update of security KB2707511

After you install the update of security KB2707511 when I try to open a ms - dos 16-bit program, I get the following error: "NTVDM. EXE has encountered a problem and needs to close. " Application does not start. I can run without error command.com. Uninstall KB2707511 in Control Panel, add & delete, the application works. Install KB2707511 error occurs.

I have a lot of customers running a 16-bit MS-DOS - program that receives the same error.  It seems not to be a malware problem, as it is homogeneous across many machines (unless, of course, all have the same problem of malware).  By uninstalling the KB2707511 and the KB2709162 they all work. Something in these updates is in conflict with something in these dos programs causing the "NTVDM. Erorr EXE'.

I recommend to uninstall the application from the--> utility Control Panel programs & features and then put it back. You can use the charm of the search and the type of programs & features. Click on the above icon to call the utility.

You can reinstall from the Recovery Manager.  Invoke the charm of the search and type in recovery and click the icon.

Find the Recovery Manager from the list of drivers and applications and put a checkmark in the box to the left and then click install in the lower right corner.

Support for WinXP (x 86) SP2 ended July 13, 2010. After this date, the computers running Windows XP SP2 (x 86) "will no longer receive software updates from Windows Update" (automatic updates will not work and the Windows Update Web site is not available) until SP3 has been installed.  Extended support for WinXP SP3 will continue through April 8, 2014.
