  I have Vista Ultimate. Automatic update was held last night (the kind that you can't refuse). When I logged in today, all my configurations have disappeared. Background, sidebar and Windows Explorer now points to the users/TEMP instead of the id under which I am connected.

  Is there a solution for this or should I it out?

  There was a free version of Norton with the computer - it's been uninstalled AFAIK

  Applications, (Norton and McAfee) are notorious for not to uninstall (or upgraded) themselves.

  1. download the Norton Removal Tool, save it to your desktop: ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe

  2. close all open applications (that is, anything with an icon on the taskbar).

  3. right click on the file that you saved in #1 above and select run as administrator to run the utility. DO TAP not your keyboard until the race ends, then restart.

  Ideally, you would have done the above before installing Symantec Endpoint. Doing now can prevent similar problems in the future.

  If still no joy (as I suppose), open a free Windows Update support incident or contact Symantec technical support.

  Latest security update will not install WIN Vista Home premium 32-bit. Had no problems until that uninstall IOLO System Mechanic.
  Have tried to change the config wuauserv, bits, cryptsvc & dcomlaunch; and cleaning of distribution of catroot2 to catroot3 and software files.

• A security update cumulative for Internet Explorer 8 in Windows Vista (KB978207) not installed correctly

  My PC vista Home Premium

  Hi guys, sorry for the long post, but I'll give as much detail that good I hope to get a positive result.

  I can not install the security update (KB978207) and get this message "some updates have not been installed security for Windows (KB978207) "

  I did the following

  1A tried to update manually with my disabled antivirus avast
  2 tried to uninstall manually after a clean boot
  3. downloaded and run microsoft Mr. Fix it
  4. I ran a few newspapers and displayed in a PC Tech Forum, I uninstalled a few unwanted files via Avenger that may have caused this error... no luck
  5. I used malwarebytes and nothing found
  6. I used HostsXpert and restored MS Hosts File.
  7. after sending a Windows Update of my recent activity log, it looks like a 3rd driver could be the cause of the problem, but I don't have a clue that one was the answer.

  I have no idea what to do at this point, I feel a little out of my depth now and have never had an update fails before.

  Any help would be welcome

• IE8 failed to update April 2010

  Failure of the cumulative update for IE8 for Vista. Update is KB980182 (had exactly the same problem, a month or two back with Cum.update KB978207). Error message 800719E4.

  NB: No matter what Norton or McAfee free trial which is preinstalled on the computer when you bought will be reinstalled (but invalid) when Windows is reinstalled. Even if the trial version is not enabled, you MUST uninstall it and download/run the appropriate removal tool before you install updates, Windows Service Packs or IE updates and before installing your new anti-virus application.

  1. If you use Norton (Etc), disable it before using System Restore. info at the link above.

  2. try SR in safe mode:

  Try typing F8 at startup and in the list of Boot selections, select Mode safe using ARROW top to go there > and then press ENTER.

  Try a restore of the system once, to choose a Restore Point prior to your problem...

  Click Start > programs > Accessories > system tools > system restore > choose another time > next > etc.

  3 Malware will stop at the system restore:

  If necessary, do all the work Safe Mode with network.

   

  To get into Safe Mode with network, press F8 at the Power On / boot and use key arrow upward to get into SafeMode with networking from the list of options, and then press ENTER.

  Remove the Vista updates; two ways to do this:

  1. a System Restore to before the updates:

  Click Start > programs > Accessories > system tools > System Restore > restore time/choose your own date > next

  If you use Norton, disable it before using the system restore.

  If it is impossible to enter the Normal Mode, do a Safe Mode system restore:

  Press F8 at the startup/power and the list of startup options, use THE ARROW key to select Safe mode > and then press ENTER.

  System restore steps according to the info above.

  Also:

  2. click on start > right click on computer > properties > Windows updates down the lower left corner > updates installed in the lower left corner in the next window

  > then click the one that you don't want > uninstall will appear at the top > uninstall it.

• Update IE KB978207 - Bootmgr is missing error

  One of our machines KB978207 update IE was installed causing a problem at the start to the top: "Bootmgr is missing". Tried using the Vista CD to repair the installation, but the DVD player could no longer be read clearly visible in the bios. After some time, we finally got it to work.
