  • Update Manager fails to analyze host to upgrade.

I just recently updated Virtual Server 4.0 Update 1. My next step is to update my servers ESX 3.5 to 4.0 Update 1. After going through the steps and the creation of a reference database that I was unable to analyze the host in order to get it updated. I received the following error message.

VMware Vcenter Update Manager had an unknown faliure. Responsible for check and tab events and logs for more details.

    Got this error?

    Thank you

Now, I have the solution. You can find it in http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsp_vum_40u1_admin_guide.pdf on page 45:

-vCenter Server and Server Update Manager are installed on the same host and their database instances are on

    two different hosts.

If you separate the VirtualCenter 2 databases and the UpdateManger to different SQL servers.

Without having to disassemble, I get the following error message:

Setup has found that several schemes exist in the database, please remove the additional schemas before you continue.

If you can not ignore this message, you should really separate the VirtualCenter DB of the UpdateManager-DB.

    What's new with 1 updated in ESX V4.0, it wasn't a problem.

  • Update Manager Does'nt Get Host updates

OK, so pretty much what the title says.  I have Update Manager running on VC 2.5 and when I run an update so he can get the new patches it downloads no patches of the host.  I don't know why, because some of the guests are still Build 110268 so its not like any of my guests are the most recent updates.

    Thanks in advance!

There is a problem with your base line... There should be a default base lines.  Are all absent VMware?

  • Update Manager upgrade of the ESXi host that he is running in a virtual machine does

That is the question.  Here is some information.  We were a completely virtualized environment for several years.  2 guests ESXi collocated 5.5 to different data centers connected of course by a VPN site-to site.  The VPN itself is provided by VMs and vCenter runs in a VM to one of the sites as Update Manager is to proceed with installing it. If the vCenter and/or VPN VMs are down, we have a very cool backup method to gain access to and manage ESXi and its console.   Some of you who read the rest of the present will be tempted to suggest to architecting our environment differently, but we are very pleased with the way it is thank you very much :-)  Appreciate all the answers but really just responded to this specific question.

The reason why we want to Update Manager is really just to be able to upgrade easily ESXi in the future without enter in the console and the execution of orders, etc.  I realize the documentation and blogs on this topic that ESXi may need to go into maintenance mode and stop the virtual machines running on it (not a cluster if no migration) how ESXi is lose connection to the Update Manager (if the remote host) or a stop Update Manager (if the local host).  So the question is, is that the process of updating managed by Update Manager an atomic operation at that crucial moment or a sequence of operations depend on continuous connectivity and control of Update Manager.  Ddoes ESXi, then perform the upgrade and restart regardless - that would be great - or he'll just stand there in maintenance mode to learn more about disconnected now / stop Manager update pending.

    Your answers are greatly appreciated.

Please, tell me if I understand you:

Ask yourself if you can upgrade the host running Update Manager VM? And you cannot migrate the virtual to another host machine because there is no cluster in place and no shared storage?

If your answer is YES to both questions, I can tell you that you cannot use Update Manager, since you must put your host in Maintenance Mode and therefore you will need to stop all virtual machines running, including the VM Manager Update.

  • How to use the Update Manager

I'm going to update ESXi 5.5 hosts my cluster but I know Update Manager component, so I ask if it is possible to host unique patch so that I can test VM on it and then to extend the update to the other guests.

  • Update Manager - never to host reboots

We use the Update Manager (on vcenter 5.1). We have a host with a new esxi installation 5.1 (799733). Using the Update Manager and applying critical patches of host base line tells me there are 111 available patches. If I look at the individual patches contained, most say that the Impact is "Reboot, Maintenance Mode. However when I run the restore, the process only takes around 5 minutes and never restart the host. If I run a scan, it tells me that no update is necessary. It seems that the patches have been applied. However, I fear that it happened so quickly and never required a reboot. Is this a normal behavior. Y at - it another way to confirm that the patches have been applied?

Sounds like the base line does not include the old plates. Choose the option change the base line and:

If you use a fixed baseline, remove patches no ESXi5 from the list.

If a dynamic reference database is used to change the product only to ESXi5.

  • How do you update a host unique vm with Update Manager

I have a single vmware esxi 4.1 host on a remote site and vcenter is a virtual machine, as well as 2 other virtual machines.  It is the target of SRM as well.

In any case, I tried to address updates in the Update Manager and it expires just waiting to the power off vm.  There is no other host VM in this cluster is not as if something can vmotion off.  So I'm wondering because the Update Manager vcenter server running running on THIS host, if it were to close then maybe Update Manager could not perform?

How can I update this host, currently on 4.1.0 260247.

I have an another ESXi 4.0.0 171294 clocked at that site and it can also access the shared storage that can the 4.1 server.  I can't handle this in vCenter and vMotion things to him because I don't have a license to do.  But could I import vcenter to do this and it turns on and then try to restore the other host?

    Thanks for the help.

    patches are cumulative.

you don't need a vma, its good for multiple hosts.

just ssh into your box directly if you have only one box

  • DMZ Canals to allow the VM Update Manager 4.0 Update 1 for work FRO ESX 4.0 Hosts?

    Hi all.

I'm trying to get two ESX 4.0 servers in the DMZ to be allow to get patched by our internal server VMupdate Manager... Having a few problems to work through our firewall and was hoping that someone who post the ports required to make this work? When I scan the host I get this error:

Host cannot download Vmware Update Manager patch store files. Check your network connectivity and configuration of firewall and esxupdate logs for more details.

ESX host connects to the Manager to update through port 80. The reverse proxy forwards the request to 9084.

For host ESX sweeping and sanitation, Update Manager requires that port 80 be open on the ESX host.

  • VMWare Update Manager Server does not work after changing name of host/IP

I have Virtual Center 2.5 update 4 and Manager Update on two separate servers.

I had to rename and change the IP of the Server Manager to update, and now the Server Update Manager does not work.

Here are two mistakes that I get, when you try to activate the plugin Update Manager:

"The server took too long to respond" or "VMWare Update manager cannot accept applications because VirtualCenter.

Server is not reachable, or it's the database is not reachable

    by train to stop'

That's what I did to change the host name:

-J' uninstalled virtual UpdateManager 1.0 Clients Center customer.

-I stopped the Service VMware Update Manager on the update server

-J' I renamed the update server changed its IP address and the host name and then rebooted the server (without starting the VMware Update Manager Service)

-J' changed the value of the fields

    dbo. VPX_EXT_CLIENT. URL

    dbo. VPX_EXT_SERVER.UR

-in the vCenter (on the vCenter server) database reflecting the new name of the server (the new hostnameis to pings to the vCenter server)

    -J' restarted the vCenter Server

-J' started the Service VMware Update Manager on the update server

-J' installed the client plugin update manager Virtual Infrastructure client

-J' have TRIED to activate the plugin, but I got a warning about an untrusted certificate (I guess it happened also when I installed the client for the first time, and everything worked) and then I got two errors:

sometimes "the server has taken too much time to react" and a few other times "the VMWare Update manager cannot accept applications because VirtualCenter.

Server is not reachable, or it's the database is not reachable

    by train to stop'

I think that there are a few other references to the host name of the Update Manager, which I have not changed, on the vCenter server or Manager Update server...

Does anyone have an idea what do I do?

    Thank you in advance.

I would try just reinstalling the update on existing installation manager.  Do not overwrite the database in the process so that you shouldn't really lose anything.  Not the plugin, but since the Update Manager vCenter installation media.

Give that a try and let us know how it goes.

  • Update Manager - host updates does not download

    Hello

I'm having a problem with the Manager to update to download updates to the host. For all lines created for guests basic IE host critical updates, critical host no updates etc. the number of updates = 0.

On the other hand, the virtual machine updates seem fine download. Please see the attachment.

Can anyone think of a reason why this is? Anyone had this problem before.

    Thanks in advance.

    Any help is really appreciated.

    PM

Depending on whether you have any custom schedules defined, I am tempted to uninstall the Update Manager, remove from its database and the repository, then put back in place. The update log manager files are in

    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\VMware\VMware update Manager\Logs

but I'm not sure that you will find all the answers. Saying that, you should be able to see something in vmware-vci - log4cpp.log.

  • Import repository patch Update Manager manually

Hi guys.  I read all the directions for this shoot.  Specifically, I used vmware-UMD to download it on another system and then exported to a directory on the vCenter server.

The next step was to use vmware - updatedownloadcli.exe to import it on the server.  However VUM 4.0 are not only supports the command more.  Y at - it a utility replacement or another way to on 4?  I looked around, and I can't find other ways to achieve this.  Thanks in advance.

    Hi Jeff,

I could finally do it.  Once you've done the downloaded and exported in a file, which is what I did, you then transport this file no matter how you want to / can in your isolated as a directory system.  In other words... you have on your machine UMDS, after export, a directory named "whatever" with a folder named "Hostupdate"(il contient toutes les mises à jour), a file named "version1.txt" and another named "version.txt". "."  Now, you will need to take the folder named "whatever" and copy the disk system on the computer of vm/physics that your update manager is on.  Then go to the Update Manager, and then click the Configuration tab.  Choose "Patch download settings", unclik 'Direct connection to the Internet' and clik "use a shared repository.  Put in the path to the folder that you have just moved the system disk.  In my case it was c:\patchesx4.  Last step, object of clik 'Download' to the right of the path statement.  I must say 'connected' later.

My export file was very large, so I found that you can remove updates in the folder "Hostupdate" you know that you don't need and it still works fine.  I tried to download only the updates that I wanted, but it will only have those... must do every update for the past thirty-six years, unfortunately, but at least you can remove the unwanted.

Now that I understand, I'm going to try to understand the use of baselines etc.

Hope this is what you need to do.
