Update the iMac MID 2011 to work in FCPX with 4K

Hi all

I think to upgrade my iMac like mine is a MID 2011 but research on the Apple site, I don't think OMG that tilt for £2800!  My current system is an i7 3.4 GHz with 12 GB 1333 MHz RAM and AMD R HD6970M 2048 MB.
I also installed an SSD as boot drive a few years so he tried there to justify going to the iMAC for 5K.

Do you think I'll get a decent performance gain in FCPX edition 4K since the new iMAC
4.0 GHz quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 4.2 GHz
32GB 1867 MHz DDR3
2 TB disk Fusion
AMD Radeon R9 M395X with 4 GB of video memory

Thank you very much

Lee

ID to avoid the car of Fusion. Rather get a smaller SSD and use an external RAID Thunderbolt.

  • update the iMac mid-2011 or buy a new one.

    Hi guys,.

I have an iMac 21.5 "mid 2011 with 12 Gb RAM. I was wondering if it was a good idea to override this model (installation of an SSD, etc.) or buying a new iMac.

I am not very happy with RAM soldered to the logic board of the new models 21.5 ". Load path Apple extra RAM too. Most users may not upgrade RAM or change SSDS by themselves, but, I'm a small part of those who like to modify and update my Mac, I like to do and not be restricted by a marketing strategy.

    However, what do you think?

Looking at the price of new iMacs, I would setup an SSD and more RAM if your iMac runs correctly. You will save money, and this computer will last you a few years without glitches.

However, if you feel that your iMac is not powerful enough for the tasks you do, go for a new iMac. As you say, Apple does not allow you to change anything (except installation RAM on iMac 27 inches), so buy the iMac with the amount of RAM and disk that meet your needs.

  • Can I set up a secondary monitor to the HD on my iMac mid 2011

Can I set up a secondary monitor to the HD on my iMac mid-2011 with no problems. I cannot afford to upgrade to the new iMac 27-inch and wanted to update my monitor.

Is this possible on the Mid 2011 iMac?

    Yes.

Your best option is to choose a good monitor that has Display Port or DVI input and shy away from those who only have HDMI and VGA input.

For a display Port monitor you will need a Mini Display Port to Display Port cable if it is not provided with the monitor.

For a DVI monitor you will need to a Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter and a DVI cable.

  • Cable Thunderbolt does not fit into the Thunderbolt ports in my iMac mid-2011

I have a Mac Mini (purchased in early 2015) I want to fix it up to use at work. I need to reformat home using my iMac (mid 2011) as screen and then copy all files and applications from the iMac to the Mac Mini. Both have ports Thunderbolt. So I bought a Thunderbolt cable from a third party (!) and I'm baffled... the cable, both ends, is part of the Mac Mini but does not fit (either end, either the port, there are 2) in the iMac, no matter how hard I jiggle it. It is not the cable... but I'm confused as to how the TWO ports on my iMac could be wasted. Believe it or not, I have never tried to use before. PS., they are certainly the Thunderbolt ports, with the lightning bolt symbol bit.

1A everyone has ever encountered this? All my other ports work fine.

    2. is there another way to target display mode in addition to crush on both machines? I found this article: use your iMac as a display with the target - Apple Support Display Mode and it seems that I can use only Thunderbolt, but I wanted to make sure.

Have you tried to return to the end of the cable? Don't be offended, it's happened.

  • using the iMac 27 inch mid 2011 as an external monitor with a PC via mini DisplayPort

I find conflicting information via web search to be able to use my iMac 27 inches, mid-2011 as an external monitor with a PC. Is it possible to use the iMac as an external display via the Display Mode target between Thunderbolt port of the iMac with a PC equipped with a mini DisplayPort?

Of course, I hear it's possible with the appropriate cable. But if it is not possible, I would like to know for sure.

Thanks in advance for your help with this. _henry

  • Clone HD on SSD (Imac mid-2011)

Hi, I have an iMac mid-2011 with 1 TB of hard drive and I'll install a SSD 1 TB as a second drive. I think I will clone the HD on the SSD with Carbon Copy Cloner. My question is: can do the clone operation after installing the SSD inside the iMac to speed up the process or I clone the HD before the opening of the iMac with the SSD connected via USB? I have only USB 2.0, I think is going to be very slow in this way... Thank you, Francesco

Install the internal SSD if that's your plan. Start the computer from the HARD disk, and then use disk utility to partition and format the SSD drive as follows:

Clone El Capitan on a new disc

    1. Restart the computer. Immediately after the chime, press Command - R until the Apple logo and progress bar appear.
    2. When the Utility Menu appears, select disk utility and click on the continue button.
    3. When disk utility loads select the SSD (generally, the entry Out-bumpy) in the list aside.
    4. Click the Partition tab in the main window of disk utility. A panel will fall.
    5. Set the GUID partition scheme.
    6. Define the type of Format Mac OS extended (journaled).
    7. Click on the apply button, then click the fact when it is active.
    8. Select the new SSD, then select restore in the menu editing of disk utility.
    9. In the drop-down menu select the volume that you want to clone - your HARD drive.
    10. Click the apply button to start the process.

This can take some time depending on the amount of data is transferred. Disk utility also automatically clones Recovery HD from the HDD to the SSD.

  • Bootcamp errors during the installation of the USB on iMac mid-2011

I tried to install Windows 8.1 on my iMac for mid-2011. The problem is that my optical drive is not working properly.

I created a USB bootable via Bootcamp Assistant on my MBPr and have tried my iMac HARD drive partitioning, using OSX disk utility and disk in recovery mode utility. I tried to leave the space as free and formatted as ExFat and fat.

At the start of the usb drive and try to install on the bootcamp partition, I get the error that it is a MBR and not on a GPT partition.

In addition, do not know if it's important, but it is a secondary internal drive. My main drive of OSX is an SSD. I have no problem accessing the drive in question under OSX.

    Help please!

Mac 2011 (and more) have challenges with no DVD installs due to optical drive problems. Changes to the file info.plist Bootcamp to allow creating install USB works only partially because of start-up problems. Only two solutions that work with a high degree of success are

    1. replace the optical drive, or,

  • Update the iMac 21.5 mid 2010 "with SSD

Hi - I am interested in upgrading my iMac 21.5 mid 2010 "with an internal SSD. Have been reading the posts on the subject and I wanted to clarify a few points. As I understand it, there is not a spare drive Bay, so my options are to replace the existing drive, or replace the optical drive.

    My questions are:

    (1) is there a difference in meaning in performance in both options?

    (2) the location of the optical drive is a stable position (physically) to put a SSD?

    (3) if it is placed in the location of the optical drive, I'll be able to boot from the SSD drive?

    (4) I read that if you replace the hard drive, there is also a problem with a heat sensor that fans end up running a full speed, and you must download a software workaround solution, or get a special thermal sensor OWC. This applies also to put it in the optical Bay? Why or why not, and if not, is the drive always properly cooled? Not sure I quite understand that part.

    Thanks for any help,

    David

I added an SSD for my iMac 2011. It has an extra SATA port, so I could leave the optical drive in place and put the SSD in behind it, while keeping the original HARD disk too.

I think that 2010 models do not have this port, but the other World Computing would be able to confirm this on their site based on the available kits.

    1. you won't see any difference in performance in both positions. Note, the 2010 iMac uses ports SATA 3 G, so if you use a 6G SSD, it will only run at 3G speeds. Willl you always get a huge performance on the old HDD even gain at this slower speed.

    2. Yes, to use the available kits

    3. Yes the installer once you define which drive you want to boot from in system preferences > startup

    4. I think it's only valid for 2011 models, but still OWC kits will show if you need the adaptor cable. It does not apply in the optical drive. Cooling still works correctly if you use the kits to correct or additional software.

Edit: just check out OWC, it seems that the thermal cable adapter is required for this model

Edit 2: If you have never worked on electronics, I strongly suggest that you do not open the iMac yourself. If it is not particularly difficult if you are experienced, it is very easy to break something if you do not have this experience.
