2 cisco Nexus 1000v of which cluster only 1 use.

I know that the procedure of upgrading to 5.1

1. create DB SSO, SSO of installation

2 upgrading VC to 5.1

3. install WEB CLient set up AD authentication

I have problems with the Nexus 1000? I hope the upgrade will treat them as he would a distributed switch and I should have no problem.

He wj, treat the Nexus as a dVS.

    Hi all
I read an article by Cisco entitled "Best practices in Deploying Cisco Nexus 1000V Switches Cisco UCS B and C Series series Cisco UCS Manager servers" http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/switches/ps9441/ps9902/white_paper_c11-558242.html

A lot of excellent information, but the section that intrigues me, has to do with the implementation of module of the VSM in the UCS. The article lists 4 options in order of preference, but does not provide details or the reasons underlying the recommendations. The options are the following:

    ============================================================================================================================================================
Option 1: VSM external to the Cisco Unified Computing System on the Cisco Nexus 1010

In this scenario, the virtual environment management operations is accomplished in a method identical to existing environments not virtualized. With multiple instances on the Nexus 1010 VSM, multiple vCenter data centers can be supported.
    ============================================================================================================================================================

Option 2: VSM outside the Cisco Unified Computing System on the Cisco Nexus 1000V series MEC

This model allows to centralize the management of virtual infrastructure, and proved to be very stable...
    ============================================================================================================================================================

Option 3: VSM Outside the Cisco Unified Computing System on the VMware vSwitch

This model allows to isolate managed devices, and it migrates to the model of the device of the unit of Services virtual Cisco Nexus 1010. A possible concern here is the management and the operational model of the network between the MSM and VEM devices links.
    ============================================================================================================================================================

Option 4: VSM Inside the Cisco Unified Computing System on the VMware vSwitch

This model was also stable in test deployments. A possible concern here is the management and the operational model of the network links between the MSM and VEM devices and switching infrastructure have doubles in your Cisco Unified Computing System.
    ============================================================================================================================================================

As a beginner for both 100V Nexus and UCS, I hope someone can help me understand the configuration of these options and equally important to provide a more detailed explanation of each of the options and the resoning behind preferences (pro advantages and disadvantages).

    Thank you

No, they are different products. vASA will be a virtual version of our ASA device.

ASA is a complete recommended firewall.

  • Update Virtual Center to U1

I need to upgrade my Virtual Center to match my ESX4 U1 servers.  It seem not to be many complaints about bad server updates to Virtual Center.  Is it really as simple as performing the installation and reboot?  Our envorionemnt is entirely HA.

I remember there is even no need to reboot the server vCenter. Just a little down on service vCenter.

HA will continue to work without vCenter.

  • Update Manager: it updates Virtual Center or just the ESX servers?

Hi all.  After months of inactive Update Manager, I finally got it going again and so I need to install approximately 6 months of updates on my ESX servers.  This is the easy bit.  But how can I update my virtual server to the center of update 1-2.5 2.5 update 4?   Update Manager at level Virtual Center for you or is it a manual process?  That is to say.  Do I need to download the ISO and do an inplace upgrade?   Thanks in advance for any help

    see you soon

The process of upgrading to vCenter is separated from the Update Manager. Download vCenter media - save your vCenter database and then run the installation program - it will do an upgrade on the spot.

  • Update Virtual Center of using SSO 5.1 5.0

I currently have 5 VC installed on a virtual machine. 1 data center, 4-pole, 40 guests in total. I want to upgrade to VC 5.1 and then of course the upgrade of my hosts.

I wonder if I should use simple installation or install the SSO, the inventory and VC separately.

questions: what are the limits of the Simple installation? In the documentation it says for small deployments, but no precise figures.

    Thank you

Simple installation gives you the opportunity to provide the size of your inventory during the installation, so it could support your environment. The bundled SQL database supports 50 VMS of memory. But if the database is elsewhere is not a problem.

Theres no reason not to use the regular install, especially with the limitations of install install/basic simple SSO.

    Hello

    I get the following error when applies the 6.0.0 - Sourcefire_3D_Defense_Center_S3_Upgrade - 1005.sh

Update Installation Failed: [% 1] Fatal error: error running script 000_start/003_check_DC_memory.pl

    Thank you.

    Hello

This script verifies the memory available to the centre of defence to use, and 6.0.0 requires a minimum of 6 GB of memory, an increase from 5.x versions.

-Stop of the DC gracefully from the CLI or WebUI

-In vSphere, right-click on the domain controller, select change settings.

-Adjust the Configuration to allow a minimum of 6 GB to the device and save the memory settings

-Turn on the DC back and resume the update.

    Thank you

  • Problems of Virtual Center update

    Hello

I'm trying to update my 2.5 Update virtual Center 2-day 6 and downloaded the zip on the VMWARE site.  When I run through the upgrade, everything seems fine and I click on install, but shortly after, I get:

Windows Installer - another version of this product is already installed.  The installation of this version cannot continue.  To configure or remove the existing version of this product, use Add/Remove programs from the control panel.

Is it not possible to upgrade on top?  You really have to uninstall the old version of VCenter to update to the current iteration?  This is my first Virtual Center upgrade.  Or is that what I downloaded the wrong package?  And is there a smaller package to use for update?

    Kind regards

    Darren

Another version of this product is already installed. The installation of this version cannot continue. To configure or remove the existing version of this product, use Add/Remove programs from the control panel.

Is it not possible to upgrade on top?

Apparently not... It does not give an error, he specifically told you TO remove it all first.  vCenter 4.0 performs the removal of previous versions for you.

And just info there is NOT such a thing as an 'upgrade' EVERY install, Windows, programs, EVERYTHING a re - INSTALLS the product, some may simply automate the removal of the software if you don't have to do, but NO Windows "updates" package the existing installation, they ALWAYS remove the oldest elements, then replaced with the most recent.

Does anyone know if this causes problems. This has been the case since before I started and there seems to be no negative effect I see.

  • Virtual Center upgrade to 5.0 U1 4.1 on the new machine

    Hello

I don't see that this scenario in the upgrade documentation so wanted to clarify.

Have currently Windows 2008 R2 server running Virtual Center 4.1 U1 and database resides on separate SQL 2008 Server.  Virtual Center Server has been improved 3 times now so eager to make a new update for Virtual Center 5.0 on a new server by keeping the existing database.  The data migration tool cannot be used because it is only for the migration of versions prior to version 4.1 U1.

    I'll do the following:

Install a new server with new name/ip.

Install Virtual Center 5.0 and create the DNS pointing to the existing SQL 4.1 database.

-At this point is it ask me to upgrade the database?

I have problems in doing this?  Will all of my existing hosts show as offline and must be reconnected and updated Virtual Center new server SSL certificates?

    Thanks in advance.

Yes, there will be an upgrade of the DB schema, so make sure you have a good backup. Make sure that you set up the system DSN from 64 bits to the correct address and test your connection to the DB before upgrading.  Also, make sure you have dbo on the VCDB and MSDB

I have problems in doing this?  Will all of my existing hosts show as offline and must be reconnected and updated Virtual Center new server SSL certificates?

If you change the host name and IP, your hosts may be in offline / not responding.  If you do a right click on it and "connect", they should return to the inventory very well.  (you may be prompted for credentials to the root)

  • How to check what database is used by VMware Virtual Center?

    Hello

I recently inherited a small environment and I was asked to upgrade ESX 3.5 to ESX 4.0. I'm not a person from the database, but how can I check what database is used by VMware Virtual Center? According to the guide to upgrade the MSDE database is not supported in ESX 4.0.

I want to just make sure that we did not use this database. I looked in the ODBC Data Source Administrator. Thanks to the system DSN, I saw that the drivers for Vmware Update Manager and Vmware Virtual Center are "SQL Native Client". Also registry editor, I watched HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE-> SOFTWARE-> VMWARE, INC.-> VMware Virtual Center-> DB. Data on 'Vmware VirtualCenter' next to '1' and '4' is set to "SQL Native Client".

So, how can I determine if the database used is not MSDE?

Sorry for the stupid question, but I'm not so much with the databases...

    Thank you.

    Den...

    > So, how can I determine if the database used is not MSDE?

MSDE does not remote databases.  ODBC Open, click System DSN, click Configure.  The listed database is that it uses, and if that is the name used for virtual center, this is the database in use.

  • Update ESXi with a Virtual Center Server

    Hello

I've updated a Standalone ESXi server using this guide

    http://www.vmadmin.co.UK/VMware/35-esxserver/262-esxvihostupdate

It works the same way during the updating of the ESXi servers that are under a virtual Center Server?

    Thank you

as part of the upgrade, using Crossover, a new vCenter agent is pushed. So, no, you don't break anything.

  • Virtual Center 2.5 update to Update5

I did some searching on Google but could not find a guide to update step by step.

Recently asked me to update our U5 virtual Center 2.5.

    How can any reference?

    Thank you.

    It's pretty simple.

Just run 2.5u5 installer - it would detect the existing facility and offer to upgrade.

But of course take db backup first.

  • Update of ESX4 without virtual center or Update Manager

    Hello

I use a 1 host configuration, where Virtual Center is installed as a virtual machine. I understand that this is not "best practice". Our host in a data center and rack space is limited for us. Anyway, how we would update ESX in this environment? Virtual Center being a virtual machine, it will have to be stopped to host clean up the updates. We cannot provide a physical box at present to perform Virtual Center. Is there therefore a non Virtual Center / Update Manager ESX update mode?

    Thanks as always...

Unfortunately, it will not work with ESX - because updates are done differently. Each update in ESXi update the firmware to the previous version, while in ESX each patch is added to the ESX operating system.

The download link of the last update is here - https://hostupdate.vmware.com/software/VUM/OFFLINE/release-166-20091202-254879/ESX-4.0.0-update01a.zip

You will have to powerdown your VMS put your host in maintenance mode - install the patch

  • vCenter 4, Virtual Center 2.5 update 5

    Hello

I am eager to test vSphere and plan on the modernisation of one of my ESX hosts at vSpehre(ESX 4). At the moment all my ESX hosts running ESX 3.5 Update 4 and they plug into my virtual center which is Virtual Center 2.5 update 5. I'm wondering - is it possible for me to update one of my hosts vsphere and power continue to administer fully in VC 2.5. Or do I have to put my server VC to vCenter 4 to allow me to fully administer.

Hoping someone can put me straight on this one, can't find anything official.

    Thanks in advance.

To test that fully, you will need to have vCenter 4 - since you only test I resist a new vCenter Server 4 and use this leaving your existing environment intact
