Hi Darlahood,

Welcome to the Microsoft Answers site!

You can run (Checksur.exe) system update readiness tool

Download and run (Checksur.exe) system update readiness tool. After downloading this tool, it runs an ad hoc analysis of inconsistencies that might prevent future maintenance operations.

For more information about how to download and run the system update readiness tool, click on the number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: 947821 Description of the system update tool for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821

In article 947821, scroll down to the "Microsoft Download Center" section, and then click the link to download the update for your operating system preparation tool.

Once you run the tool check how many errors you get. If you get errors of 10 or more, you will need to perform an in Place Upgrade. You can post the result once you run the tool.

Hope this information is useful.

    Hi DMO523,

I suggest you to download a Service Pack 2 standalone package and install it in Mode without failure.

See the links below for more information about the Service Pack.

How to obtain the latest Windows Vista service pack

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/935791/

Depending on whether you are running 32-bit or the 64 bit version of Windows Vista, you can download the Pack from the links below.

To determine if you have 32-bit or the 64 bit version of Windows Vista, click the Start button, right-click computer, and then click on Properties.

If you use a Vista 32-bit edition, you can download it from

    http://www.Microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=891ab806-2431-4D00-afa3-99ff6f22448d

If the 64-bit operating system, download the pack of

    http://www.Microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=8ad69826-03d4-488C-8f26-074800c55bc3

Also, follow the link below for more information on the installation of SP2.

Learn how to install Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2)

    http://windowshelp.Microsoft.com/Windows/en-us/help/105f7420-6f7f-4FE8-8698-2f40ca5f53711033.mspx

Now, start the computer on which you plan to install the service pack in safe mode.

Note: Installing Service Pack 2 in safe mode, will erase all restore points.

For more information on starting the computer in Mode safe, click on the link below:

Start your computer in safe mode

     http://windowshelp.Microsoft.com/Windows/en-us/help/323ef48f-7b93-4079-a48a-5c58eec904a11033.mspx

Once the computer in safe mode, double-click on the file from the service pack and install it. Once the service pack installation is complete, you will be asked to reboot. Do. Your computer will now reboot in normal mode. The reboot takes longer time usually, there are a few extra steps for the installation of the service pack to be now carried out.

I hope it should work now.

To resolve this problem, replace the GlobalInstallOrder.xml file damaged on the system with the same file from the Windows Vista installation media. To do this, follow these steps:

    1. Get the Windows Automated Installation Kit (Windows AIK) WIM filter driver. To download and install the Windows AIK, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

      http://www.Microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=c7d4bc6d-15f3-4284-9123-679830d629f2&displaylang=en (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=c7d4bc6d-15f3-4284-9123-679830d629f2&DisplayLang=en)
    2. Click Start, point to programs, click Microsoft Windows AIK, right-click Windows PE tools command prompt and then click Run as administrator.

If you are prompted for an administrator password, type the password. If you are prompted to continue, click on continue.

    3. At the command prompt, type the following command and press ENTER.
      MD c:\Mount

This command creates a folder named mount.

    4. Put the Windows Vista installation media into the CD or DVD drive.
    5. At the command prompt, type the following command and press ENTER:
      ImageX/mount DVDDriveLetter\sources\install.wim 1 \mount
    6. At the command prompt, type the following command and press ENTER:
      CD\mount\Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft-Windows-servicingstack_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6000.16386_none_07289f4cca5f6990

This command moves to the source folder

    7. At the command prompt, type the following command and press ENTER:
      xcopy %windir%\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-servicingstack_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6000.16386_none_07289f4cca5f6990 GlobalInstallOrder.xml

This command copies the GlobalInstallOrder.xml file in the destination folder.

my windows vista does not accept updates or tried any download error code 800700CB can someone help pls?

    Hello

    (1) what is the exact full error message?

    (2) is the specific question of an update?

    (3) remember you to make changes to the computer before the show?

You can try the following methods and check the status of the issue.

    Method 1:

    Troubleshoot problems with installing updates.

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows-Vista/troubleshoot-problems-with-installing-updates

    Method 2:

Disable your security software installed on the computer and try to install the updates.

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows-Vista/disable-antivirus-software

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows-Vista/turn-Windows-Firewall-on-or-off

NOTE: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you should not disable your antivirus software. If you need to disable temporarily to install other software, you must reactivate as soon as you are finished. If you are connected to the Internet or a network, while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

    Hello

Looks like the files in the folder "Software Distribution" are damaged, try to rename the folder.

step 1: open the 'Services '.
    > Click Start > type "Services.msc" > hit ENTER > search for "Windows Update" service > right-click on it and click on 'Stop' (if it is not already stopped).

Step 2: rename the Catroot2 folder.
    > Open computer > folder "C:\windows" goto > search for "Software Distribution" folder > right click on it and click "Rename" (add ".old" to the end)

Step 3: restart the "Windows Update" Service.

    Step 4: restart the computer.

Step 5: check the Windows updates.

Let me know if it worked. :-)
