Updated repeatedly offered KB2686509 for Windows XP but it fails to install without any error/message code. Ideas?
The analysis of windows update says that no critical updates are available. However, Secunia scan says my Windows is vulernable because the security KB2686509 patch is not installed. My tool bar constantly shows the yellow shield indicating that an update is available. When I click it, it initializes successfully but gives a message that KB2686509 has failed to install. There is no other error code of the message on the nature of the problem.
See the RESPONSE messages in this thread-online http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_xp-windows_update/kb2686509-repeatedly-fails-with-error-code/0deeacb6-115c-419d-ac37-03ff8927b79c

My computer is set to the automatic update in Windows 7 Home Premium and Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010. I am also running Norton 360. There was a major update for the office on 10-12-14, which seems to be at the start of my problems. This month, whenever my updates caused a restart, Mozilla has failed to open. I uninstalled and reinstalled several times, and it lasted only a day or two before it crashes again. This last time it is still not open. All instructions to solve problems appear to be based on the idea that the program is open and just questions. I can't even open it in Mode without failure.
I tried to reinstall, and it says it will launch automatically when the installation is complete, but it does not work. As Norton scan every download before it works, I am not sure if this is the problem since I never get the window that indicates the setup step by step for Firefox.
What should I do?
Some Firefox problems can be solved by performing a clean reinstall. This means that you remove Firefox program files, and then reinstall Firefox. A clean reinstall is not the same as a regular resettlement performed using built-in installer. Please follow these steps:
Note: You can print these steps or consult them in another browser.
- Download the latest version of Firefox from mozilla.org office (or choose the download for your operating system and language on this page) and save the file to install it on your computer.
- Once the download is complete, close all Firefox Windows (or open the Firefox menu
Click the close button
).
- Remove the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
- Windows:
- C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
- C:\Program Files (x 86) \Mozilla Firefox
- Windows:
- Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
- Double-click on the downloaded Setup file and go through the steps in the installation wizard.
- Once the wizard is completed, click to open Firefox directly after clicking the Finish button.
More information on the resettlement of Firefox can be found here.
WARNING: Do not use an uninstaller to third parties as part of this process. This could permanently delete your Firefox profile data, including but not limited to, extensions, cache, cookies, bookmarks, personal settings and passwords saved. They can be retrieved easily unless they have been backed up on an external device! See back up and restore the information contained in the profiles of Firefox.
Please report to say if this helped you!
Thank you.

«Computer laptop gateway - 2005.» Windows XP Media Ctr Edition
Hello
If you have security software (antivirus, firewall etc.) you can try to disable temporarily for a few minutes, visit a secure site (for example https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird), download and check. See also this.
If it works you can then try to remove any existing Firefox instances and its process/associated files in all modules/areas of different configuration of the software security as a process of monitoring, sup/led process control, virtualization, HIPS etc., in addition to the main security software control panel. Instead create new rules entirely authorized/reliable for Firefox + its associated processes in all the different modules/panels - one installer of Firefox as well as all real/original exe (Application) installed and DLLs (Application extension) is digitally signed by Mozilla Corporation (right click > properties > Digital Signatures). Even otherwise, some security software may also ask again when Firefox and/or its sup processes are started, and you can be able to allow/trust at this time. Please see this.

Do I need to install the System Update Readiness Tool KB 947821?
Probably not: I had a lot of doubt that SP2 is installed if KB947821 has not already been installed.
Given that this problem is after a fairly recent install of SP2...
Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for Windows Vista, but only for Service Pack 2 (SP2). This support, initially planned to end on November 26, 2009, has been postponed until February 26, 2010, so move on! Availability of support chat or messaging differs depending on your location. In the case opposite & whereas KB971644 is NOT a security update, you can simply hide the "thing":
1. stop the automatic updates service:
Start > Right click on run , and then select run as administrator > services.msc (type) > [OK]
Double-click automatic updates > click stop
(Stopping the service will take a moment)2 remove the contents of the download folder:
Start > Right click on run , and then select run as administrator >
(type or copy/paste) %windir%\SoftwareDistribution > [OK]
Open the download folder and delete its content
Close the window.3 start | Control Panel | System maintenance and (if you use Classic view, skip this step). Windows Update | View the updates available (or Select the updates installed): right click on the (platform) update for Windows Vista (KB971644) | Click hide update | Confirm the prompt UAC (User Account Control), if any, & OK your way out.
4. start the automatic updates service:
Start > Right click on run , and then select run as administrator > services.msc (type) > [OK]
Double-click automatic updates > click Start
(Stopping the service will take a moment)=====================================
To restore/show updates for Vista: Start | Control Panel | System maintenance and (if you use Classic view, skip this step) | Windows Update | Restore hidden updates: Find and select the update you want to install. Click restore. You can now select once again it and install through the normal process.NB: If KB971644 were available for download/installation manual (and is not), I would have you try it.

When you disable Antivirus:
Important note: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you should not disable your antivirus software. If you need to disable temporarily to install other software, you must reactivate as soon as you are finished. If you are connected to the Internet or a network, while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.
