  Due to the specific design each laptop has the cooling system specific that allows the optimum temperature of material and do not allow any laptop to run on the critical temperature. A more powerful processor means more heat, so I think that's not such a good idea to change. CPU utilization slightly faster not bring you performance much more, I guess.   in my opinion, 78 degrees Celsius is a bit hot for a P4 in a notebook.

  The best way is to put the laptop to your dealer or to a Toshiba Service partner.

  I would ask him if they can do a stress test and check if the P4 is really hot.

  On the motherboard FSB speed is 533 MHz and compatible modules are DDR2-533, but you can use RAMs DDR2-667. 2 GB of RAM has PA3513U-1M2G part number.

  According to this page, the satellite L30 - 11 d can be upgraded to 2 GB of RAM (2 x 1 GB)
  You must use the RAM (533 MHz) DDR2 200pin modules.

  I think that the laptop doesn't recognize the 2 GB of RAM due to compatibility issues you should try the modules of RAM from another manufacturer. Maybe Kingston would be ok.

  The RAM slots are placed under the keyboard. You must remove the keyboard (between the keyboard and the LCD) support, remove the screws that attach the keyboard and then remove the keyboard.

  To be clear. Your Satellite L20 is really not the best laptop and on the scale of 1 to 5 when 5 of the best, I give your laptop 2. This laptop is designed for day-to-day activities like Office, internet, watching movies, listening to music and writing emails. So I think that with the preinstalled operating system and well set to own and 1 GB of RAM, it must have enough power for this.

  I don't know what you want to do with this good old classic, but if you need laptop with more power for games or multimedia activities, I think it's time for the new laptop computer.

It's quite risky upgrade that will void your warranty. What you can try is to contact the nearest Toshiba service provider and seek advice.
