Upgrade to ESXi 5.0 to 5.1 - No Hardware 9 option available when creating a new virtual machine

Greetings,

I improved my esxi U1 5.0 to 5.1 and attempted to create a new virtual machine in hopes of using the new version of material 9.

Using the standard and Custom options I been unable to create a Version 9 hardware VM by default.

The only option I had was manually upgrade to version 9 once the virtual machine was created.

Any thought or is - this as planned? I need to reinstall from scratch, my host?

To create virtual machines with HW version 9, you can use the Web Client, rather than the windows based Client vSphere.

  • Blue screen when you create a new virtual machine from an acronis image.  ESXi 5.0

I'm trying to create a virtual machine in my ESXi 5.0, from acronis backup.  The backup is W2003.

The virtual machine is created, but when it tries to start on W2003, he quickly shows a blue screen for a second or two, then try to restart.

I suspect that it is a hard disk driver, but I don't know how to correct it.    I couldn't see anything in the Bios of the virtual machine to select type of HD.

    This fixed my issue.

Glad to hear that it works now. Even if VMware Converter 4.3 works, I would say that you are using the latest version of Converter for future conversions.

  • Change the default options for a NEW virtual machine in ESXI 5.1

    Hello

I am looking for a solution change the 'default' options for a new virtual machine created in ESXI 5.1

I want to have parameters such as 'cpu/memory HOT-add' default to enabled instead of disabled.

There may be more options to change to a new virtual machine.

All those who have an option to change the 'default' options for new virtual machines?

    THX

You can change the/etc/vmware/config of vSphere host file and add the lines mem.hotadd = 'TRUE' and vcpu.hotadd = 'TRUE '.
The settings then apply to any VM on this host when virtual machines are turned on...

I just tried this on a 5.1 ESXi host and it seems to work perfectly...

  • ESXi embedded, cannot start the new virtual machine

We have installed just a Dell PowerEdge 2950 with ESXi embedded.  That part went well.  I am able to connect through the client.  I can create a new virtual machine.  That's where I met problems.  No matter what I tried the machine does not start.  I ' v tried the host device as CDROM, the device as CDROM, and even customer created ISO W2003 CD and downloaded.  I can't understand why he won't start.   Whenever he tried to boot from the network or when he fails he just says "operating system not found" and stays like that.  I started in the bios of the virtual machine and made sure the startup options are correct, etc.  I'm lost.

I read this forum for like a day and while I see some who have had similar problems, I have not seen this precise question or a question with an answer that applies to my question.  It could be the pre holiday drink

    I hope someone can advise.

I have 5 ESXi loaded on my server and I downloaded an ISO file known (I started in a stand alone server and it works) in my store data, but when I start the new virtual machine, that it goes straight to the pxe boot, I checked the box to connect to the power on.

Any ideas on where to look?

That could prove to be entertaining, but I don't know that it will help solve the issue.  Is there the chance I can get a copy of this ISO image?

  • How to upgrade v4.1 when vCenter is a virtual machine?

    Hello

We have ESXi 4.1 on our host (only 1) and want to update to the latest version.  Our vCenter server is a 64-bit VM.  Prior to v4.1, we used the host update utility, but it can not be used today.  Can someone please tell me how we can put our host firmware update and other critical updates when vCenter is on a virtual machine?  It seems that the host must be placed in Maintenance Mode, and all the virtual machines in this regard must be stopped, so I have a problem before the hen's egg.  We do not have another host that we can migrate virtual machines to when the update...

    Thank you for your help,

    Mike

You will have to establish a direct connection to your host with the vSphere client, close the VMs and placing the host in maintenance mode.  You can then use the vihostupdate of the vCLI or InstallVMHostUpdate of PowerCLI for updating your host.  With the vCLI or PowerCLI you can also script the closure of VMs and placing the host in maintenance mode. http://www.VMware.com/support/developer/PowerCLI/PowerCLI41U1/HTML/install-VMHostPatch.html

  • Big problems after upgrade to ESXi U2 U3

So I'm pretty new to ESXi, a few months, this server running.

change I think the problem was the following. When I created VM1 and opened on the old old V of the DIR drive it was only a single file and it opens fine. When I created VM2 and open the old disk from the old DIR it couldn't find the other files because it resembled the new DOH DIR.! and then after that I moved all the files on disc to the new dir then it did not work and gave me the parent changed message. / edit

Thus, all started when I tried to use VMware Infrastructure Update on my workstation to update my ESXi server. After the update, I rebooted and the server never came back to the top. I thought: my installation is basic I'll just re - create a new USB key with the current U3 and start with that and re-setup ESXi.

So I did and was able to create a new virtual machine for server 1 and use my old virtual drive of Server1 and booted up and works perfectly.

Then I created a new virtual machine to Server 2 and used my old virtual server disk 2 and when it started it was not the right server... but it was the virtual hard disk only I could take in this DIR. After I looked again using the browser of data store, I noticed the snapshot files. If I had started in an old cliché, or I guess as the snapshot of base. But all my data are in the latest instant 2 capture files. I can't mount it as a virtual hard drive.

I got the error "... reason: the virtual disk parent has changed since the child was created."

Where I am now is so I have started more than once as the basis of snapshots without the current clichés and they do not seem to hang on after that a basis has been started and changed.

Is there anyway for me to get data from this mess?

Any help and input is greatly apprciated!

  • Migration of virtual machines to vCD and again in a standard ESXi cluster itself?

We currently have a relatively small cluster of ESXi (5.0.0 1489271) which uses a dedicated installation vCenter (5.0.0 1300600) and an instance of vCD (vCD 5.1.2.1068441).  Our goal is to move the virtual machines running in this configuration to our standard ESXi clusters (5.5.0 1892794) supported by installation of different vCenter (5.5.0 1891313).

The instance of vCD seems to add additional parameters to the level of the virtual machine that prevents the VM of to be easily transferred out of the instance of vCD.  What we are looking for is a way to easily migrate these servers on and completely remove the vCD of the equation.  The only details around that we found cause downtime for exports out of vCD can be extended to reason the total amount of drive to the VM and VM level, which we really do not think it is an option to open a window of time to stop long enough to work through this process.

Did someone went down this road before?  We have approximately 120 virtual machines in the cluster vCD using about 52 TB of disk.

Maybe we're wrong understand something fundamental about the nature of migration of VMs on the vCD instance, but we have not been able to find many details on what options exist to make this move.  We have spoken several times with VMware support in this regard.  They mentioned a potential tool in the work within engineering migrate vCD to vCAC (which isn't really fall under our goal unless vCAC would then provide a clear path to return the virtual machines to a standard ESXi cluster).

Any suggestions or ideas are appreciated.

I am a colleague of GTC and wanted to just sent to our discussion of this topic with the help of VMware.  Basically, we should be able to Setup VMs in vCenter, outside of vCloud Director, pointing them to the same files VMDK and MAC then power off VM vCD and power on VM vCenter.

Severity of the request for assistance: 4 - low

Description of the request for assistance: we are looking for ways simple and less disruptive migrate VMS off vCloud Director and vCenter management.

We have the advantage of a single principle in vCloud, managed by a vCenter and the network configuration is simple with no VXLAN.

What are the problems with the realization of the following?

vCD 5.1 is managed by vCenter 5.0, the final result will move VMs in vCenter even

-Create a new virtual machine in vCenter that points to the same vmdk files as virtual machine in vCD you want to migrate, allocate same configurations of processor, memory, and network (we do not use the vCD with advanced networking)

-Turning off the virtual computer in vCD

-Once the vCD WHAT VM is off, power on VM in vCenter

We must ensure that the VM vCD never gets turned on again and then when we are completely finished with all migrations of VMS in vCenter we abandon vCD.

Of course there are details to help users migrate to how they use the vCD to vSphere vCenter client web interface or web interface.

    Entry date: 04/09/2014

Since the opening of the case, I had interviews with several members of VMware support staff and these additional points were added.

-Configure vCenter VM with the same vNIC driver MAC and like vCD VM vNIC

-Rename VMDK files to make for easier management, or if not renamed then detach from the propelled out of vCD VM

  • Advice on the upgrade to ESXI 4.1.0 to 6

I have ESXI 4.1.0 260247 that worked for about 5 years now as a champion.  My hard drives are becoming old and I need to upgrade my storage (currently raid 2 x 1 TB 1, need 2 TB of usable space) so I am looking to update my ESXI at the same time.  I'm a show making, software development, my needs are quite simple.  I have machines virtual linux for Jenkins, LAMP, nginx, svn, mysql and I have Windows VMs for Jenkins, MSSQL, versions of office to install testing.  The most great thing miss me with ESXI 4 is I would go an automatic weekly backups of my VM to my QNAP NAS.

Essentials would be worth the money? I'm Canadian, so please consider I paid 32% more after the exchange of currencies.

I'm not an experienced administrator, ESXI 4 was free for me problem since day 1.  If I replace all readers at the same time, would be a good upgrade path:

1 export all as OVF of ESXI4 VMS

2 replace the discs in Server

    3. installation of 6

4 import OVF VM in ESXI 6

Thanks in advance for the entry.

I would backup all virtual machines to external storage, possible using https://www.veeam.com/virtual-machine-backup-solution-free.html

Update as needed. You will not be able to skip from 4.1 to 6.0. so a reinstall would be my preferred option.

Restore VMs return. Note that if you use free ESXi then you probably need to restore files on networked storage and copy them back to the store to host data because free ESXI does not include an API for veeam to restore. https://forums.Veeam.com/VMware-vSphere-F24/question-about-free-ESXi-5-and-restore-job-failed-error-t13345.html

Essentials is really cheap for what you get. You will be able to use the above correctly, because you then will licenses for the API. You probably want 2-3 hosts so that the benefits of vCenter you get with the license are worth. It is not really worth it for a single host unless you need these API etc.

  • Upgrade to ESXi 4.1 to 5.1

    Hi all

    In our Organization, we have single-server environment, everything is IBM 3650 M 3. These server contains 8 HARD drive configured as 2 * 146 = Raid 1, 3 * 500 = Raid 5.

On this server we have installed ESXi 4.1 two years ago now, our management had asked to move all these servers to 5.1 last.

In our setup we have vCenter server, which is the virtual machine on the same host, as well as 3 different virtual machines.

Can please guide us, how you to run upgrade for single server?

    Our initial Plan is

    1. to create a new machine virtual for vCenter 5.1 and installed

    2. Mount the ISO file and install the 5.1 on the host.

Not sure if this is the safe approach, because we need to minimize downtime.

    Thank you

Posted the upgrade than weinstein5 review Guide.

Must first of all a good backup.
    Check the hardware compatibility

If the production has a customized image of ESXi for these servers I would use that.
Stop all virtual machines on a host and perform an upgrade installation (you can also use this as an opportunity to update the firmware)

    Check all return as normal

    Updated VM HW

Optional: vCenter on new virtual machine
Optional: Implementation of the VSA if you have licenses for HA or vMotion

  • migrate virtual machines to esxi 3.5 free vsphere 4.1 without vcenter

    Hi all

I have vms on 2 hosts esxi 3.5 with direct (without san)-attached storage that I want to migrate to a new server esxi under license of 4.1 vsphere essentials. I intend using the stand-alone converter to migrate virtual machines from 3.5 to 4.1 and then upgrade the other two hosts to 4.1 and then moving some virtual machines using the converter.

I have Web servers that I don't want to bring down more than 10 to 20 minutes (not the 1 to 2 hours that should be a cold conversion with converter) so I try to use the feature p2v on the virtual machine running Web servers.

Has anyone done this with no san and no vcenter? If so how did you do?

is it possible to migrate without losing configurations of network adapter in the virtual machine?

I can just do something like taking a snapshot of the system of runnying, then copy files to new host, then add to the inventory, upgrade tools, hardware upgrade?

    Thank you!

is it possible to migrate without losing configurations of network adapter in the virtual machine?

After you copy the files and re - add to inventory new virtual machine, you must take care on the issue of handgun that you see in the market.

Choose I_moved the files to keep the VM UUID and the same virtual MAC address.

  • ESXi installation before vCenter Server?  How can I get vCenter Server on a virtual machine on ESXi servers?

My plan for a new vSphere Essentials Plus 5.5 U2a installation is to have the vCenter Server on a virtual machine on the servers of the host on which is installed ESXi.  However, all the installation instructions I found indicate the user to first install the vCenter Server.  How can I get vCenter Server on a virtual machine on ESXi servers?

    Thank you for your help.

    Hi munkyman welcome to communities.

After you have installed your first ESXi host, open a browser and go to https://your-ESXi-ip-or-FQDN

You can download the vSphere Client here. It is a windows application that you can install on your desktop. It is often referred to as the "c# Client vSphere" in communities and blog posts, because it is a new implemented in the vCenter Server Web client.

But for the beginning, install the vSphere Windows Client. You can then launch it and connect directly to your ESXi host. Here you can create your first virtual machine, which can be the VM vCenter (installation of Windows or device, that is you).

You can use the web client or connect to the Server with the client c# vSphere vCenter VCenter runs.
