Upgrade windows 7 32 bit to 64 bit

Hello

The elitebook 8540p, that I bought at my University did not provide with a disc of windows 7 installation.  When I started my laptop BIOS installed itself with a 32-bit version of windows 7. I recently became interested in upgrading my laptop and noticed that my elitebook can coop with a 64-bit version of windows 7.

I was wondering;

  • Why a 32-bit version was installed instead of a 64-bit version. Y at - it a reasonable explanation to this?
  • Can I upgrade my windows 64-bit?
  • If I can, how can I get Diskless windows 7 installation?
  • If I upgrade my 64-bit system, what should I take into account? What I lose every program and file on my hard drive? I need to reinstall the drivers or this will be done automatically?
  • How to really move my system? What steps should I take exactly?

I hope someone can help me and give me a good explanation!

Thanks in advance

Jesse

I think you have the wrong with this "BIOS installed itself with a 32-bit version of windows 7" installing windows 7 has had to come back from another source, because the BIOS does not only.  Since the University has provided the unit, they may have a special arrangement with the supplier who made the installation and it is everything the University bought from the supplier.

"Can I upgrade my windows 64-bit?" N ° if you want a 64 bit OS, it must be installed from a 64-bit Windows installation source, there is no option to upgrade from 32 bit to 64 bit.  You can use the same key 32-bit installation is currently using but an installation media containing the 64-bit Windows 7 operating system should be used.

"If I upgrade my 64-bit system, what should I take into account? What I lose every program and file on my hard drive? I need to reinstall the drivers or this will be done automatically? "Backup all data needed to maintain and fix the drivers for all devices before clamping 32 bit install to make sure that you can find.  Install Windows 7 may be able to find, but there still maybe not, then do your homework on this.

  • Is it possible to upgrade Windows XP 32 bit to Windows 7 64 bit?

    Original title: Windows 7

    No. two points:

    1. you can't do an update from XP to 7. You must either make a
Clean first installation or an upgrade to double - Vista, then 7. I have
recommend to do a double upgrade, because it doubles
    the risk of problems.

    2. you can't do any kind of update that changes the number of 'bits' of
Windows from 32 bit to 64 bit or vice versa.
So for these two reasons, a new facility would be necessary.

However, even if a new facility is possible, I recommend
against it since your time material XP is almost certainly elsewhere
underpowered to run Windows 7 without problem. And the purchase and upgrading of all
the necessary equipment is likely to cost more than simply buy a new
a computer that comes with Windows 7.

And another point. Switching from XP to Windows 7 will three
old versions to an old version. In my opinion, it would be much better to
Go to Windows 8, the current version.

  • Can I upgrade Windows Vista 32-bit to Windows Vista 64 - Bit and preserve everything?

I have a computer with Windows Vista 32 - Bit OS.  I have also 4 GB of RAM, but as the OS is 32-bit, he acknowledges that 3 out of 4 GB.  So, my question is, can I upgrade to a version 64 bit Vista and preserve files and programs, or what I have to buy a copy of Windows Vista 64-bit?

    Thank you

    Hello.

No.; You cannot switch from 32-bit to 64-bit.

It must be done with a new installation of the 64-bit operating system.

There has never been a way to upgrade.

You should backup your data, copy it into the 64 bit OS and reinstall all your programs

    Microsoft sells more than Vista.

And before you buy Windows 7:

  • Can I use a key to upgrade Windows 7 32 - bit for the upgrade to Vista 64 - bit, 7 64-bit, with a 64-bit upgrade disc?

It's a bit complicated, but I appreciate all help.

    I have the following:
    1. access to a genuine copy of Windows Vista 64-bit (regardless of the version I want) through IEEE Computer Society.
    2. a Windows 7 Professional 64-bit upgrade disc purchased through a program of student software in 2010. Shortly after using the disk and the key, the laptop I was using died due to hardware problems.
    3. a drive to upgrade Windows 7 Professional 32 - bit bought via the same pattern of student software, including an unused key.
Student software system only allows users to buy a copy of each version, so I can't buy it simply another copy of the 64-bit version.
I wonder if it is possible to use the key of the 32-bit version with the version 64-bit upgrade disk to upgrade a 64 bit Windows Vista installation to Windows 7? If this is not the case, unfortunately, I'll be stuck with Vista.

I recently bought Portge R700 and am disappointed by the memory. I have a license of Windows 7 64-bit edition: what problems can arise if I update? Once installed, I can then use 8 MB of RAM.

Moreover, I found the reagrding misleading Web site the option of using the 8 MB of RAM with the32-bit OS. I have 4Mb installed, years to see that only 2.86 MB is usable.

I get "out of memory" messages and would like to know how to allocate more memory to live for video.

Tom's right. If you want to use the 64-bit operating system, you must do clean install operating system. All drivers and tools specific to Toshiba and utilities must be installed Additionally one by one.
If you need assistance with installing Win7 let us know.

I put t know for what purposes do you use your laptop and what applications are important for your daily work, but, in general, I don t think you will have problems using 64 bit OS. Please keep in mind that all additional software is 64-bit capable and everything will be OK.

As far as I know laptop user doesn't have the influence of the use of video memory and it runs automatically. It is unclear to me that you can change these settings and set how much RAM can be used for video operations.

Anyway, Portege R700 is nice for laptop with sufficient power for daily use and also for use with standard applications. I don t think you ve bought this laptop for games.
