UPGRADESSSSS

Hello.

I was wondering if I could spend my 2 years, Alienware M17x R3, so it can run games next gen a higher FPS.

My current features are: I7 2670qm

GTX 560 m

8 GB RAM

I was thinking about upgrading my CPU card or graphics because they play more important roles in the game.

Thank you

James.

It is difficult to purchase video cards for the updates directly from Dell/Alienware, but other components (heat sinks and plates) are available in regular service parts. Many sales reps will not available to purchase graphics cards if they are not associated with your service tag. They will tell you the video card is not available, or say that the video card is not compatible with your machine. While the availability of stocks can sometimes be a problem, the statement about the compatibility is simply not accurate. (The declaration of incompatibility is probably a reflection of the absence of the individual technical knowledge rather than intentional misrepresentation.) You will find now and then someone who is willing to sell you everything you ask for as long as it's in stock. If you find a sales like this, keep their contact information handy for future reference.

The support of the heat sink plate (spreader GPU as some call it) can be purchased from the sources of the same spare video cards. However, some of the aftermarket support plates use a different screw size. To simplify the upgrade, try to buy directly from Dell support plate in order to use the existing screws. Unlike the updates of video cards, support plate is usually very easy to buy at Dell, as heat sinks. You buy the same parts for the 580 M, that is associated with your serial number and use to 680 M video card. Dell Reference number for the NVIDIA plate is 3MHHT. The video card for a 580 M cooler works perfectly for the 680M. The layout of the map is the same. In my view, the part number of heat sink NVIDIA to buy Dell (if you do not already) is V1K2G.

I don't have direct experience with the M17xR3/R4. I'm a M17xR2, owner of M18xR1/R2. I jumped on the mono-GPU/R4 M17xR3 because I am in favour of dual-GPU machines. The thing that I am not sure of is the heatsink from the CPU or not is strong enough to cool a 2960XM with a substantial overclock. If you run the stock CPU, heatsink of origin works perfectly, but that defeats the purpose of having an Extreme CPU largely. If you're not going to be overclocking it, there is no point to buying.

To the best of my knowledge, the M17xR3 had only one option of the CPU heat sink, unlike the M18xR1/R2, which had a better heat sink which was intended to be used with extreme CPU. Dell only part number I have for the heatsink from the CPU M17xR3 is 650RY. There could be a heat sink Extreme CPU for the R4/M17xR3, I don't know. Based on memory, I don't remember seeing Alienware sell a M17xR4 with the extreme CPU, but I think that the M17xR3 could have the CPU 2920XM or 2960XM available as an option at some point in time.

You could ask questions and perhaps to get quick answers on the heatsink to the CPU of M17xR3/R4 passionate in this thread:
