Upgrading ESX 3.0.2 for 3.5 - best practices and tips

Hello

I am currently managing a virtual environment running on ESX 3.0.2 and VC 2.0.2. I intend to upgrade this year to ESX 3.5 and VC 2.5. Anyone know where I can find information on best practices to upgrade and / or a document of instructions that will take me through the process? I had a glance on the VMWare Web site but cannot find anything.

See you soon

G

I have attached a document with this information.

First of all you must upgrade the VC and the database, then you must upgrade from ESX.

Kind regards.

    Hello

I suggest that you try to open the same pictures using Windows photo manager and see if that helps.

Right-click on a jpeg photo and try open Manager of picture Windows or Windows live photo gallery.

    Hello

I have a virtual machine that I want to give a user access to through the VI client. However, I want to only that user to have access to this virtual machine. Is it possible to leave to installation so that when a user connects to customer VI the only virtual machine that they see is them they gave authorities too?

As always, I would appreciate help with this guy.

    See you soon,.

    Pedro.

Is this a configuration vCenter ESX Server or standalone? Whatever it is, you can define all other virtual machines to no access for this user account, then apply specific permissions of read-only, read / write, etc for the unique virtual machine that you want them to see. If you use only the ESX authentication, keep in mind that this account is performed on the ESX Server itself - one of the benefits of the use of vCenter and AD authentication is that you can simply add AD to this user account permissions on the host computer.

They connect the VI client and will only see as VM - test first with their powers.

  • Best practices for upgrading from 2.5u5 to vCenter 4.1

    Hello

We are currently running a vCenter 2.5 5 update on Windows 2003 32-bit Standard that we need to upgrade to vCenter 4. Unfortunately the latest version 4.1 needs a 64 bit OS...

What is the best practice to update our vCenter 4.1 and keep all performance data? I suppose we ought to do it in severalsteps or not?

    (1) vCenter 4.0 Update 2 update

    (2) a copy of the updated vCenter database backup

    (3) to perform a new installation of Windows 2008 64-bit

    (4) to perform a new installation of vCenter 4.0 Update 2

    (5) to restore the database

    (6) update for vCenter 4.1

Is this correct or am I missing something? Is there a more easy/better way?

    Any help appreciated.

    Hello.

KO 1022104 contains best practices, and the Upgrade Guide is also a great resource to use for this upgrade planning.  Follow the steps in the Upgrade Guide and everything should go smoothly.

This is a really difficult list of steps, confirmed by the Upgrade Guide:

01 build of new VMS 64-bit for vCenter

    02. prep new vCenter VM for connectivity / SQL dependencies

    03. backup of the existing database.

04 data backup current vCenter using Data Migration tool

05 use the data migration tool to start the setup of the vCenter server and restore the configuration of the server vCenter to the destination machine.

06 turn off from the old server vCenter.

07 restore the vCenter Server Configuration and installing vCenter Server on the new server

08 updated vCenter Server name of Plug-Ins (if the new vCenter has a different name)

    09. test cycle

    Good luck!

  • What is the best practice for the double management interfaces?

    Hello community!

I'm upgrading to a few host ESX to ESXi 4.1U1 4.0 in the coming weeks. My question is about how to configure the management networks. Obviously in ESX 4.0 Classic I have a Service Console port (on vSwitch0) group and a group of ports VMkernel (also on vSwitch0) which provides my host with SC and vmotion capabilities, as we all know. Note: my vSwitch0 has two vmnic attached to it, is pending and is active. That's just how we have our double installation of switches, so it must be active / standby.

I got to thinking (book the great from HA and DRS deepdive Duncap Epping and Frank Denneman), that I should consider carefully when my network mangement I improve these hosts to ESXi 4.1 - which of course done away with the Service Console and use the vmkernel instead.

The question is, in which best practices and account with my setup: I have two vmkernel ports? If so, how should I configure each for traffic management and vmotion vmkernel?

I think it will be a good discussion to have.

    Thank you all,

    Matt

The NIC vSwitch0 value active/active, the vswif (and future vmkernel management) team of NIC Active vmnic6 and vmnic1 ensures and leaves the vMotion vmkernel NIC team as is.

This will allow you to use two physical network interface cards at the same time while having a failover plan and keep your physically separate management and vMotion traffic.

    In the end:

    vSwitch: vmnic1 vmnic6 active, active.

VMK (Mgt): active eve of vmnic1 vmnic6.

VMK (vMotion): active standby, vmnic6 vmnic1.

  • Best practices for backup service console configuration

    Hello

When you install our ESX servers, I did what I thought was best practices and created a "backup" vswitch with a second service console. Two service consoles have IP addresses on the same subnet.

They work very well for several weeks. But today, I had a problem connecting to the consoles of the virtual machines on one of our ESX host. After much troubleshooting, I found doc below...

    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?language=en_US & externalId = 749640

In point 8, it is said to make sure that you do not have 2 consoles of service on the same network. (Either by the way once I removed the backup vswitch I could access the consoles.)

I so wanted to check this - should I not create these backup service consoles?

    TIA,

    H

You don't have to second service console, just a second link to SC.

Add a NIC to portgroup SC (it can be standby NIC), which would be enough.

Thank you if someone could help with this problem

    Hello

Try listening to a shift in focus screen with this code:

    stage.addEventListener(Event.RESIZE, onResizeHandler, false, 0, true);

You can only change the width/height of your components to the event based on the width/height of the floor.

I will guard against specifying specific sizes, if you want your code to work on devices BB10. I recommend using %'s.

    Kind regards

For landing pages, you can use a bit of HTML, CSS, and Javascript like on any other page. For example, we use the Bootstrap on a couple of our Eloqua landing pages.

Support for HTML and CSS is much more limited. It is one of the best resources I've seen for CSS support:
