user-specific file associations

The file associations in Windows 7 are the same for all users, or can be specific to the user and stored in user profiles? What I could find, the HKCR subtree which seems to contain information about file associations is extracted from the HKLM\Software and HKCU\Software.  If HKCU\Software contains file associations, then maybe they can be user-specific, but if the file associations are stored only in the HKLM hive, I expect to be universal for all users.

The answer is 'yes' at the same time.  If the user doesn't have individual preferences for file association management, the setting of the local computer is used instead.

  • Weird file Association problem

I have a new and unusual file association problem.  At the start, whenever the PC is turned on, this file association window opens:

Here's the weird part: "Remy" is the name of the main user of this computer.

In recent days, before that the problem began, I had worked on some of fixing nagging problems that could be fixed now (a little too soon to be sure).  Don't know if there is a link between what I've done and this file association problem...  But here's what I did:

1 an error message for lack of file Association for an external hard drive has been corrected by the associations of fixation to the drive, folder and file from this page (see at the bottom of the box): http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/file-asso-fixes-for-windows-7/

    This problem is now fixed.

2 event ID 2 errors were corrected following the advice on this page:

    Specifically, these instructions

In another forum "richardvetman" has this solution. I have not checked yet, but that's what he said:

The circular kernel context logger takes frequent pictures of the system in a file of 100 MB of RAM (not on the disc). It is needed.

To fix the error "not start", look for the next file in the %windir%\panther\ folder:

  • Restore specific files of Time Machine on El Capitan

    Hello

I want to restore specific files from a Time Machine after then reinstalling OS.

In Time Machine that only highlight the buttons front and rear back 1 week and the sidebar, but it develops, is RED and is unclickable. I can find files by searching for them but I want to restore all of my documents and specific applications to try to remember all is not practical. The sidebar being red means it's inaccessible and if not, how can I access content on specific date, the function used to work in Yosemite and back ups I'm looking are El Capitan so don't know why I can't access it. Thank you.

Time Machine, please press the shift-command-C key combination. The windshield will show the mounted volumes. All snapshots should now be accessible. Select the one you want and search for files to restore.

If you need to restore from a backup of the hidden user library folder, first select a snapshot, and then press shift-command-G. A go to the folder dialog box opens. In this document, you enter the path to the folder. The dialog box will help you by automatically filling parts of the path when you start typing.

The path starts with the slash character ("/"). Enter that. The rest of the parts is separated by slashes.

The next part is the date and time of the current snapshot. Enter a '2', and the rest of the date should be filled in automatically. Press the right arrow key to access the end of the path. Enter a slash to start the next game.

Next is the volume name (usually "Macintosh HD" unless you assigned a different name.) Start typing, then jump to the end and enter a slash.

The next part is 'Users', followed by a slash.

Then is your short user name. It is also the name of your home folder, which is represented by an icon of the House in the sidebar of a Finder window.

Finally, enter "Library", and then press return. You should now be in the library folder. From there, you can move like in the Finder. You can also select another snapshot of the same folder.

  • File Associations Win7 and VISTA Home Prem

I'm trying to set file Association for files *.wb3 (QuatroPro 7).  I accomplished successfully when logged in as administrator, but when switching to the user Standard, the association is not in effect. If I try to reset it as a Standard user, I am going through all the movements, my PS7 exe file, click Open and then OK, QPW does NOT appear in any location on the window and the check box ["always use this program... «] is grayed out (disabled).»  This happens if I go through CntrlPnl or do a right click 'open with '.  Same problem in the two operating systems.

I also tried to open Explorer as administrator, (C:\Windows\explore.exe right click Run as admin) and even tried temporarilly affecting my user standard admin (and then again with reverse (set std/admin admin/std) of the user in order to have only admin ACCT.)  No luck in all attempts.  Anyone?

I asked this question in another thread, no no useful response.

I found a response to another thread.  In regedit, go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT > scroll down to Applications, [for example QPW.exe.]  Click here to open the drop-down list shell > open > command.  I found my QPW.exe loc was wrong.  Corrected by Edit (CHANGE) to read "" C:\QuatroPro7\QPW. "» EXE"'%1 '.

To anyone: try this if you have a similar problem.  Determine what program you want to associate, go to regedit and find it to check the adjustment control

  • A broken file associations in Windows 7 64 bit

I used to love the image viewer included with windows XP and I thought (wrongly?) that it was an integral part of explorer.exe, and so I had the unfortunate idea to this association of files with jpg files in windows 7.

Instead of doing what I wanted, when you open a jpg file now some weird recursion happens where it kept spawning multiple processes explore again and again until the machine is short of memory.

It is not letting me change it back, either.  When I choose to select to open with a specific program, the checkbox "always use selected program" is Ghost for some reason any.  It's like that with all the files!  And in Control Panel > programs > by default of the programs > set Associations "jpg" appear not at all.

So, what can be done to remedy this?  I am confident in the registry if this is what it takes, I just need to know what keys to change.

    Hi Forb

Go to the website next where you will see a box with most general file type.

Click on the type that you want to restore to download the registry file. Download the file to your desktop, unzip the file.

    Hello

You should be able to choose any folder you want to save a file download, the download in your user account folder is the default.

When the download dialog box appears, click the "Save" button.

Should then, open the Save as dialog box. You can navigate to the folder where you want to download the file and click on that folder.

If you do not see the navigation area of the files, click Browse folders down / to the left of the Save as dialog box.

After you have selected the file, click Save to begin the download.

You must select a folder in your user account for the download files.

  • Problem of Windows 8 file associations

Hi, I use Windows 8 RTM 32-bit and when I try to change any file file association it won't change and remains the unknown program. Currently I'm changing .scr file association, but it remains unknown program. I am the only account on my computer and the administrator.

I came across the same problem and SOLVED it.

    Background:

    -Migration of Windows7 Pro- x 32 to Windows 8 Pro- x 32

    Scenario:

-Win8 refuses to associate some extensions of audio and video files (specifically, flv, avi, mp3, mp4, m4v, mov, mpg, mpeg) with VideoLAN VLC media player while others (e.g. mkv) were involved.

    Solution:

    1. open regedit [I used > Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00]

    2. go to > HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts

    3. save the FileExts folder (right click > export)... just to be sure

    4. Remove extensions that refuse to associate your program (right click > delete)

    5. open: Panel > all items in the control panel > default programs > associate a file or Protocol with a program type

    6. for each extension you just deleted in the registry: select it > click: program of change... (gray button right) > choose your program

7 FACT! The files are associated immediately, without required system restart.

    Good luck!

Let me know if that solve you your problem.

  • Cannot change individual file Associations

I can't change individual file associations. The most I can do is assign an application given to 'all' the files it can open or just to 'some' of the files it can open. (And someone else chose it as 'some' is.)

    I'll give an example:

I installed QuickTime Player. When I look through the QuickTime Player file associations, I see that one of the formats that QuickTime is configurΘ for dΘmarrer is DV. I don't want QuickTime to open the DV files. I have another request for this. However, I can't remove the check mark from the DV file association. In fact, I can't remove all checkmarks of the files that QuickTime is set to open.
So my question is: How can I change the file to a unique and specific file type association?

    1. press the Windows key + X to display the system menu, and then click Control Panel.

2 select default programs. Click on a file type or Protocol with a program.

    3. wait for the window to fill and scroll down to the file type that you want to change, click the file extension. This will show the current default program associated file type.

    4. click on change program button.

    5. If the program you want is not listed in the recommended programs section, click on the Browse button.

    6. in the Browse window, navigate to the executable (.exe) file for the program you want to use and Select this file. Click the Open button. In the next window, click OK.
