I try to RDP to it and it fails, but I CAN PING the server with a response. When I go in the Console, the screen is all green, no connection invites nothing. I need to stop the machine (closed hard) and power it upward. Fortunately, this isn't a DC primary DNS, just a GC, but I can't understand what is the cause.   If it has been a success with other virtual and physical domain controllers, I would say you should be fine with this strategy.  Its VSS or suspension of comments that causes the most problems with backups of DC VM guests.
