VDR 1 or 2?

The vdr unit 2 which came out with version 5 is listed in the compatibility matrix does not work with esxi 4.1.

http://PartnerWeb.VMware.com/comp_guide2/SIM/interop_matrix.php

But I saw a video on vdr 2 how running on 4.1 by Eric Sloof (smart enough guy) http://youtu.be/f4pq5vPa6zw

I may not like many things. someone will clafify can it work on 4.1

Ty brand

It should run on the following versions, so that means below esx versions will be supported for VDR 2.0. It is best to go in the supported way.

VMware Data Recovery 2.0 can be used with:

  • VMware vSphere 5.0
  • VMware vSphere 4.1 update 1
  • VMware vSphere 4.0 Update 3

It will be useful.

  • Question about backup with VDR 2.0.2

    Hello

Excuse me for very low knowledge on this argument.

I have a very simple question. If I made a backup of a motor home on Windows Server virtual machine and I create a folder on this machine between the time where VDR create the snapshot and the time of the end of the copy, when VDR remove the snapshot, the folder will remain on the server? All the changes I made on a virtual machine in the VDR copy will be lost or before to remove the snapshot, the changes will be merged with the original disc?

    Thank you very much.

    Hello

the disks will be merged. If your changes are not lost.

The backup however of course only will contain data up to the point when the snapshot was created.

  • What card v2 VDR uses to move the data?

    Hi all

We use VDR version 2 and I was wondering that NIC should be used to extract data from the snapshot? My guess is all what stays on the NIC for iSCSI traffic since he shoots the VMDK file info and the camera VDR has a direct access to the vmfs iSCSI volumes that it's back up.

    Thank you

If the ESX where resides the VDR unit have access to the current virtual machine to backup, it's using the iSCSI network (if your SAN iSCSI). If this is not the case, the ESX management network is used.

  • VDR 2.0.1 / dev/sdb /-physical disk not rise, destinations

    Hi all

I have a problem with my VDR 2.0.1 last backup has been the failure due to power and after that problems on VDR destinations where I had destination normally one network, stay another one, physical disk no rise/dev/sdb /. I can not remove from vClient cause it says "destination is in use", but there is not any visible running task. This physical disk is exactly the same size as one of my VM who began with backup when possible failure has occurred. Also, under the VDR icon in vClient I see the same VM hard file.

That's happened? How can I mage it?

    Concerning

    Kris

Remove the disc from VDR-VM-mixer under 'Edit Settings' with Remove.

That make a snapshot of the virtual machine affected and after that delete all the snapshots of this virtual machine.

Normally this will solve these problems, if VDR was interrupted during backups.

  • VDR Virtual Machine protection

    Hello

We use the Vmware data recovery software to make backups of Virtual Machines. I have the following queries

    (1) I want the files called VM starting from backups. How?

    (2) If a virtual machine is corrupted or deleted, I can restore from backups. Are there methods are there to protect the Virtual Machine of VDR (like all the backup information and schedule backups are stored here) disaster.

    Hello

    In response to your questions

    (i) good article about the unique restoration of files/folders

    http://www.ballblog.NET/2011/08/restoring-individual-file-using-VMware.html

(II) can download a 2nd camera VDR and point to the same destination share - separate host if you have one would be better of course.

  • VDR, VDP, VCB - demystifying the Backup Options

    Hello world

I am currently evaluate the backup options for our field of VMware, and delve into the options causes some headaches.

Little background information - about 10 hosts ESX 4.1, VCenter Server 4.1, 100 + VM, Fibre Channel SAN storage.

    I found the following:

VMware Data Recovery - as far as I know, this was replaced by the VMware Data Protection?

VMware data protection - similar to VMWare Data Recovery in terms of technology and operation.

VMware Consolidated backup - after reading several contradictory articles, I'm fighting to see where it is. Some people say it VCB don't * actually * save anything.

So, I think that the base on my environment and the version of vCenter and ESX, my first choice will be:

    VMware data protection

    Veeam

Can someone give a brief summary of the differences with the three designated products and how they fit into a backup strategy virtualized it please?

    Thank you

    David

VCB is an ancient technology of the pre-vsphere 4.0 era, now replaced by vStorage API. Essentially, each backup, including the VDR, POS or Veeam software, rely on this technology.

Another thing to keep in mind: you have a 4.1 cluster, you cannot use POS, if you do not upgrade to vSphere 5.1. 4.1, you can only use the VDR.

About Veeam, is 3rd party product shopping, it is not included in the beams of VMware. Apart from this, in my view, there still many advantages even on the POS again. To name a few:

    -no backup repository size limit

    -orchestration between compiling deployment

    -recovery instant vm

    -surebackup

You can take a look at what these features to the site Web of Veeam.

VDP is the latest version of the VDR, isn't it?

It is the successor/replacement of VDR rather than a later version. POS is a new application. For more information, see http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/techpaper/Introduction-to-Data-Protection.pdf

    Dear team,

We have ESX 4.1.0 / 3.5 in our environment, and we plan to implement VDR 2.0.1 I just want to know, we can take VM backup with vdr2.0.1 with any problem.

    concerning

    Mr. VMware

Well, it's time to upgrade/patch. vDR has been added to the Standard with ESXi 4.1 Update 1 license. In the GA release (260247) you are running has not been included. See http://blogs.vmware.com/vsphere/2011/02/vmware-data-recovery-is-now-included-in-standard.html

  • Limitation of 1 TB VDR

    Hi friends,

I heard that there is a limitation of backup destination VDR 1 TB. What does that mean? is that mean that total backups of all virtual machines should not be exceeded 1 to or VMDK to a single machine virtual 1 TB file size? I'm confused. Help, please

    Thank you

    http://pubs.VMware.com/vSphere-50/index.jsp?topic=%2Fcom.VMware.DataRecovery.admin.doc_20%2FGUID-748CAB0C-934D-49C9-BE97-875CEF3367C6.html

    http://www.VMware.com/products/Datacenter-Virtualization/data-recovery/FAQ.html

    Q. What are the maximum number of deduplication destinations and size of each destination?

Device a. each VMware Data Recovery may have to not more than two destinations of deduplication. It is recommended that each dedupe destination be not more than 1 TB in size when using virtual disks. When a destination disk is a CIFS share, it is recommended that each dedupe destination be not more than 500 GB in size.

In summary, total backups should should not increase more than 1 TB for a store, it's that you can have two stores 1 TB which is 2 TB of total space you can use for VDR to store backups.

VDR is not a complete solution for virtual computer backups, you can use veeam backup or symantec.

  • 2 VDR "impossible to create the snapshot for < system >, error-3960 (cannot suspend virtual machine).

We test VDR on our ESXi 4.1.0 cluster 381591 and we have a few backups to a test Windows 2003 server and a Linux server and they backed up fine. We have a backup of a Windows 7 computer virtual test and we had a bunch of these errors...

Failed to create the snapshot for systemname, error-3960 (can not suspend virtual machine)

Which is strange because I can go in vSphere client and manually create a snapshot and remove without problem. Any ideas on why this is happening?

    Thank you

You can try to set the 'disk. EnableUUID' to 'false '.

  • Several stores data by the backup task backup VDR 2.0

I have install a camera VDR 2.0 with 2 - 1 TB data warehouses. One thing I wonder is if I create just backup 1 task it will use two data warehouses. Which means it will fill the 1 data store and then when it is complete, use the 2nd data store?

Or I have to create two separate backup jobs for each data store? I looked and can't seem to find an answer to this question.

    Thank you!

You need 2 backup jobs, if you want to use 2 data warehouses.

  • VDR Upgrade... but not?

Hi - I want to spend 2 VDR VDR 1.2.

I read how to upgrade your existing backups into your new environment of VDR 2 but what I'd rather do is install VDR 2 as a new install and start backups new but at the same time still have my old backups archived in case I need it.

So in other words, I usually add the hardrive existing 1.2 VDR VDR new, 2 for the moment, but let in 6 months, I need to recover a file from the old backup set that I can then simply add the old hardrive VDR 1.2 to the current environment of VDR 2 and from there?

    Thank you

If you want to do this, I would recommend not to remove the old vdr and close.

Install the new vdr and point to the new directory to backup.

If you need to recover an old vm. to turn on the old vdr. Or just stop the old backup vdr´s schedule.
