Vista firewall and network settings

Greetings,

Running Vista Ultimate OS and for the McAfee Security Center security system, providing the Dell system.  Security Center is a brand product (McAfee) Dell.  It includes a firewall.  It is generally not recommended to run two firewalls at the same time on the same system.  In this case, my preference is to disable the Windows Vista firewall and manage only the McAfee Security Center Firewall.

However, by doing so, effects of undesirable changes in the Windows Vista network configuration.  Specifically, disable the Vista Firewall automatically turns on the discovery network and file sharing in the network settings of Vista, which is not desired.

The question:

What is the solution to run Windows Vista with the firewall (Vista) integrated offshore, the McAfee Security Center Firewall and discovery network and settings (network) off the coast of file sharing?

By the way, my troubleshooting on this has included disable McAfee Firewall to determine if she could be causing a conflict with the firewall and Windows network settings.  Apparently not, because even with McAfee firewall off it is still not possible to disable the Windows Firewall (in this case, No firewall is running) without network discovery and sharing settings being switched automatically on files.

Again, the goal is to run the McAfee Firewall with the network discovery and parameters (network) off the coast of file sharing and Windows Vista firewall off the coast.

Thank you-

Network discovery is enabled or disabled in vista network and sharing Center by activating or deactivating vista firewall rules. You can maybe re-create these rules in the McAfee Firewall, although they will be not be enabled / disabled from the network sharing Center. The following site will show how to display vista firewall rules:
http://NPR.Freei.me
Are you sure there is no setting in McAfee to block the sharing of files and network discovery?

Note: the rules for sharing printers and files, and network discovery are clearly identified in the vista firewall.

    Hello

Thanks for posting your concern here at Microsoft Community.

If you have changed some Windows Firewall settings and you want to cancel your changes, you can restore the firewall settings to the original (default) settings.

    1. Open Windows Firewall by pressing the Windows key + X , and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, type firewall, and then click Windows Firewall.
    2. In the left pane, click restore defaults. If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
    3. In the dialog box that appears, click restore defaults. At the confirmation prompt, click Yes.

  • Windows Vista Firewall: Uncheck basic network layout would make my computer more secure on the Public network?

I use the Public network a lot.  I noticed that on my Windows Vista firewall, Core Networking is checked on by default.  Unchecking it would make my computer more secure on the Public network?  I already checked in my firewall settings, block all incoming connections.  Regarding security, I run MSE, like Spyware Blaster in the background.  Automatic updating and Malware Protection are on.  My other security settings are OK.  I do not understand why Core Networking is checked on by default.  This would make an open port, right?  Unchecking it would make my computer more secure?  Thank you.

    Hello

If you uncheck Core Networking IPv4 and IPv6 will be unreliable or blocked.

You have a router, a firewall (today, most have them) which is excellent protection

  • How can I change the network settings and air play setting up the itunes which is running on my laptop (windows 10)

A few weeks ago, I was streaming of photos to my TV using my apple TV. Now, whenever I try to play music in my laptop itunes I get the error message "the airplay APPLETV device is not available," he goes on to say "Please check your airtime... configuration and network settings. "I searched for days for these parameters.

Now the itunes on my laptop has no audio data.

The only way I can hear the track I'm playing, is to select the option at the foot of the error message that says "use this computer for now" - this gets quite annoying after awhile!

    any suggestions?

    Hello [email protected],

I understand that you encounter some problems with the sound settings on your PC after using a home since iTunes for Windows sharing.   The resources below has some basic for home sharing troubleshooting. Specifically, I would say the software updates, cycling the power to the modem/router and check the sound settings in Control Panel to do the internal speakers are of course selected.

  • Wi - Fi and network suddenly stopped... Local only (Vista).

I basically solved my problem. I'm writing this in case someone else has this problem.  (I was without any networking capability for about a month after a failure and request Windows update several uninstals due to a malfunction stopped responding - don't know if any of these are related?)  The computer couldn't even * is * on the network.

First, I eliminated material as being the cause.  My suspicion is that a firewall was still in force, even if I completely uninstalled my Antivirus and disabled the Windows Firewall already.  Then I tried to disable the Base filtering engine (the "Services"), and * voila! * all returned.  I immediately installed a temporary, caught up firewall on Windows Update and reinstalled my Antivirus.  Everything's fine now, as long as I keep the Base filtering engine.  Rebooting it stops all the networks again.  I don't know if there are risks to let off, but for now, I'm happy.

    ******************************************************************

Sorry if it's verbose.  I was no longer able to use networks of any type for about 3 weeks on my laptop Vista Home Basic.  Are wired and wireless down (I use different routers to a cable and Wi - Fi), while my Office XP continues work as a champion using a router.

Everything had been working fine for a year or more until what all of a sudden stop.

I also can't connect to the network wirelessly at my school more (it is a laptop).

(Note that I am not currently under any additional firewall beyond the Windows Firewall).

Three concurrent problems occurred at the time of the failure which could be related.

    (1) I tried an uninstall of the interface software LegoMindstorms NXT after a school project.  Uninstalling shifted on for about an hour and has stopped responding.  I did a system restore and repeated the uninstall.

    (2) I noticed the 'auto-protect active"icon of Symantec AV was changed to"disabled", even if I was not disabled it and my license is up to date.  In the settings menu, I unchecked and recontroler the auto-protect of selection, but it didn't fix it.  I tried to uninstall it, and it stopped responding as well.  I did a restore and another attempt to uninstall succeeded.  Windows Firewall and defender will have to do for now.  (I'll be reinstalling my AV soon and will get updates when I am able to connect again).

    (3) I reviewed my recent Windows updates installed and found the last (KB982536) has a status marked "failed".  I uninstalled that before that failed just to see if she had caused the next update not working, but it does not solve the problem.

    * I tried several system restores, but none have set.

    I also did the following:

    tried another ethernet cable
    * removed wired and wireless cards from the Device Manager, rebooted and (allowed them to reinstall)
    * updated to the latest version of the NETWORK adapter driver by using my other computer (XP) and the copy of the USB

(An upgrade to Windows 7 can solve the problem, but this isn't an option I will consider for now.)

Your settings do not look correct to me.  There is no default gateway (which alone explains why you can't connect).  Good number of other entries look right either (they are different, that I'm used to seeing).

I suggest you remove all your network connections (remove them all) and start from scratch.  Configuration of the LAN connection, and when you get this work then set up the internet connection and get this to work.  Do not re - install connections, you do not need more (it seems that you have a good number of people).  You have tried to repair these connections and there may be something wrong with them which cannot be repaired (they can be corrupted or some type of conflict or other).  Starting with a network connection fees registration with nothing (not wired or wireless) and do everything as if it was a new machine can solve the problem.  Make sure you know the correct settings before deleting the current connections (and make sure that they are correct even if you need to contact your ISP for confirmation).

    I hope this helps.

    Good luck!

  • How can I get unidentified network settings stick, private and change its name?

I use Windows Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) on my computer at home, because my Internet is wireless usb (AT & T Quicksilver) device that can be plugged directly into my router (Linksys WRT110).  Given that the router accepts only as an internet connection ethernet cables, instead I use my desktop computer as the connection (ICS) and using the router only as a hub, essentially.

Everything is working well at the moment.  The Office will connect to the internet and other computers and devices connected to the router (wired and wireless) are all works well and can share the internet connection.

But whenever I restart the desktop computer, the default network is "unidentified network" and as a type of 'Public' without discovery service.  So every time I go to network settings and make it private.  It works fine until the next reboot.  In addition, I am not able to change the network name.  The field seems open for entry, but selecting and typing does nothing.

I don't know if it's relevant, but other devices to connect to the network are laptops (of various working groups, need to be since they are mainly used to work) and a DirecTV DVR, using Mediashare (via Windows Media Server).  Yet once, they all work, after doing the private network, but this is lost at every restart of the desktop computer.

I wish I could have it be a private network that is identified by a name and keep these parameters at each reboot.  But I have yet to find an online solution that worked for me.

    Matt,

Thank you very much.  It worked like a charm.  I was pulling my hair out on this one for a few months.  Once again, a big thank you!

For anyone else trying to solve the same problem, here is the summary of the solution.

I have already had no default gateway specified.  As advised by Matt, I right click on the Local network connection (in network and sharing Center / manage network connections) and went in the IPV4 properties and put in the address of a default gateway (equal to the IP address of my router/hub).  I left the ICS settings and all the way IP addresses which I had them before (with zero in the third byte of the IP address of all and ICS turned on).  I have no registry changes.  The only change is the default gateway.  After this change, a wizard appears to allow me to set up the network properly.  And I could rename and define the private network.  And the changes were intact after several reboots.  Perfect.
