Windows Vista updates keeps giving me the same updates

This problem may occur because of corrupted content of the Software Distribution folder.

Rename the software file Distribution try to access the Windows Update site again.

How to rename the software D folder in Vista - distribution agent version

    1. stop the Windows Update service (make sure that you are logged on as administrator)

Start button | Control Panel | System and Maintenance | Administration tools
    Double-click on Services
(Provide the administrator password or a confirmation if prompted to do so.)
Right-click the Windows Update service and click on stop.

    2. Click Start, type %windir%\System32 in the search box and press ENTER.

Find and rename the folder C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution.

    3. start the Windows Update service

Start button | Control Panel | System and Maintenance | Administration tools
    Double-click on Services

Right-click the Windows Update service and click Start.

This procedure will erase your history on the Windows Update Site. Not important.

Reboot - without having to restart, the new folder could not be created successfully.

My windows Vista (sp2) contains updates it refuses to install!

    (1) Microsoft .NET Framework 4 on Windows (KB2468871)
    (2) update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4 (KB2533523)
    and
    (3) update for Microsoft Silverlight (KB2617986) this update of Silverlight includes the fixes described in KBs 2604930 and 2617986.
When I tried to get help via the MS support, I was told that my install Silverlight could be the problem and uninstall all previous versions and install a new one.
The current version on my machine is 3. something or other (Google Chrome me briefly earlier, but I can't seem to tell me yet again!) He also pointed out that the current version is 5. something or other.  However, I don't know--according to the functionality of uninstall in Control Panel - my version was installed on 21/01/2010 - about 7 months after I got the satellite (a Toshiba). It occurs to me - as it has been ongoing for awhile I fought first to make this thing work and then ignore it (neither of which, it seems, I am able of!)-update Windows is trying to apply can be updated too!
According to the update of Windows, all three of these updates have downloaded - but I am not sure where...   When I tried to uninstall the old version of Silverlight, Windows Uninstall (via Control Panel) tells me that I need the Silverlight installation disc to go ahead. I've never had one! What can I do? Why these upgrades do not work? It has been for months!  Help, please.
