Volume control icon disappeared

My office is running vista and a few days ago the icon in the notification area white volume control has disappeared. When I go into the properties of the taskbar to show once again, the volume option is grayed out. Can anyone suggest a way to recover the icon? (I tried to reboot several times)

Original title: missing Volume control on the speaker/icon

My volume control icon disappeared from my office. On my notification area icons > system icons, the volume icon is set to 'off' and grayed out so I can't change it. I did NOT choose this option. It just happened when I turned on my computer this morning and had no sound and no "speaker" icon appearing in my bar tasks, like she normally does.  In addition, my notifications area icons is set to DISPLAY the volume control on the taskbar, but it does not show.  Restarting my computer did not help.  What can I do to get this to redisplay the taskbar? Fortunately, I can always manually volume by going to control panel, sounds, speakers, level and make it work, but it's too long. I need to be able to turn the volume on and off quickly.  I have Windows 7 Home Premium. Thanks for any help that can be given.

Thank you very much for your answer!

The answers to your three questions are No, Yes, and No. miraculously, when I turned on my computer this morning, the icon is back!  I'm sorry that you have to spend so much time explaining what to do, but at least I'll have your answer to see if it never happens again, and maybe it can help someone else.  I doubt I'm the only person never to happen.  Once again, thank you!

    1. what security software is installed?

System Restore takes a "snapshot" critical system files and some program files and registry settings, and then it stores this information as restore points. If your computer is not working properly, you can use these points to return Windows XP to a previous state when your computer was working properly restore.

A few days ago, I turned on my pc and found the volume control icon that is normally displayed on the taskbar background, had dissappeared?  I explored all the options (icons hidden etc.), but the icon does not exist anywhere.  Can you help me?

Click on the link below. Enter your number of product as that indicated on the Service tag on the bottom of the laptop (can be under the battery). You can also get the product number by pressing Fn + ESC key. After you enter the PN, click Next, then choose the software & Drivers. On the next page use the menu drop down to select your (probably Windows 7 64-bit) operating system. A list will fill with the drivers. Download & Intall the latest Audio driver. Reboot the laptop and check the results.

  • IM using windows 7. my volume control icon is missing, how do I get it back? __

I don't know what went wrong, but after using my laptop last night and start using it now, I think not my volume control icon, I'm pretty sure that I saw him last night because I tried to change my volume settings while playing downloaded from music.  Also, I downloaded Nero 9 last night it would be the cause? Please help me...

I'll wait for the answer, any help would be much appreciated... :-)

    Step 2:

.. .restart computer and check again.

That's exactly what I did!... when restarting didn't work the 1st and the 2nd time, I restarted again!
I have a PC HP Compaq on Vista.
I installed the new HP D2660 printer yesterday,
    restart the computer.
Each icon is a shortcut to a page of browser Firefox Web is empty, is not going anywhere.
The volume control is missing from the system tray.
No sound on YouTube videos for example.
I have double checked everything connected ok.
I downloaded an audio driver of HP/Compaq's Web site (which I can't do):
"Realtek High Definition Audio Driver Update for Vista
    "Compaq Presario SR5152NX 2008-03-01, Version: 6.0.1.5548, 12.34 M
Restart the computer by following the instructions.
Panel, sound, speakers, Realtek HD Audio shows: work
Taskbar and Start Menu, right-click on the taskbar system tray, properties, Notification area... Volume icon is gray.
I now have in my taskbar icon of HP for RealtekHD Audio Manager but no Volume icon.
Sound now works well for example on a video YouTube online, but missing still Volume icon from the system tray.
    Restarted the computer.
At hp.com, customer service for my computer model, instructions for the Volume icon on the taskbar:
Notification area of the taskbar, properties, right-click... Volume now shows black :/ Checked the box 'apply '.
"If the icon appears in the area of Notificatioin' you're ok... He did not show.
    Restarted the computer.

Came here for Microsoft (it would have been easier if I had come here in the first place :/
Right-click on the taskbar, Notif.Area, clicked on 'Volume' once again, clicked OK... volume icon now present in Notif.Area AND on the taskbar. Yay
I consider myself lucky... I didn't have to do the 15 steps the registry editor or delete registry Explorer keys and shouldn't have, thank God.
    Thank you

    Hello Hassan.

Thank you for using the Microsoft answers Forum

Start by making a right click on the taskbar, and then select Properties. Select the tab, Notification area and choose Volume under the icons in the system. That should put back your icon on the status bar at the bottom right of your screen. If she does not please repost here and let us know.
