  According to the manual (HP Envy 5540 all in a manual series) on page 22, it goes into powersave mode after 5 minutes of inactivity. You can change this time in the control panel if you wish.

  After 2 hours of inactivity, the printer will automatically turn off, and you have to press the power button to restart. This auto off function is not active if the printer has wireless or WiFi Direct features turned on. Or if she has a fax, Ethernet, or USB connection. This info can be found on page 23 of the manual linked to the previous paragraph.

  I try the functions on my new 5540 ENVY. Everything is set up and working correctly so far. I just printed a document from my iPad using the WIFI Direct function on the printer successfully. However, the default password on the printer for the WIFI Direct is simply "12345678". Surely, it should be replaced by a more secure password. My friend something printed its iPad - so obviously, this password is not exclusive to me, anyone can print stuff on my printer just for fun and I have a lot of students around me, the problem could become expensive for me and very boring. WIFI Direct signal covers a distance. I contacted HP telephone support, but the process is time consuming and I had to hang up because I had to work. Maybe someone here could give me instructions, and I can change the password when I have free time. I use wifi for internet (cable ethernet only) and the printer connected via USB to the computer.   I just bought a 5540 envy and it's a nightmare, trying to get it to scan using computer scanning (TBS). Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. He worked earlier ebven today while STC has not been activated and utility HP reported that nothing could communicate with the printer.

  I tried to download the update of the firmware that has been issued on the 18.10.2016, but it wont load because its telling me the printer is in error.

  Please help because my patience is running thin, and after more than 25 years of use HP stuff this thing becomes very close to be thrown in a dumpster and replaced by a Canon...

  Are you able to scan from the Mac on the network?

  I would like to know what software you tried.

  If this is not the case, try a USB connection. Let me know if it worked.

  1. Uninstall the software.
  2. Start the computer in minimum mode.

  5. Create a new user account.

  My Envy 5540 printer will not retain the setting "use photo trays. I get a message that there is some kind of conflict. Pressing AutoCorrect returns the statement in the main tray.  I downloaded the latest software of the printer. I read the answers to similar questions on the forum, but I still don't know how to print a photo 4 x 6.

  In the search for a solution, I found a shortcut to print to print borderless prints.  That showed me that there is a choice of 4 x 6 paper.  It is rather hidden because it is labeled 10x15cm/4x6in.  I had to change the shortcut to change the main paper in the photo tray. When I used this choice of paper with the other settings you suggested, I could get a 4 x 6 print.

  Just bought and installed an HP Envy 5540 printer all-in-one. Everything I try print the fate of the right color.   Looks like you have already performed the steps in troubleshooting in the paper here.  At this point, he seems to have a faulty cartridge and will need to contact HP for a replacement.  You can remove the cartridge and gently pat dry the nozzles on a wet tissue.  A good cartridge will have a strong task of cyan, magenta and yellow.  If your cartridge cyan is missing it would confirm the cartridge as the question.

  I think that you don't need to leave the pritner on permanently.

  In fact, when printer is turned on and connected to your home network, whenever it prints, the printer will count pages to the subscription type.

  If you do not have instant ink service after the trial, don't forget to terminate service scared you get charged for the subscription!

  NB., we have been able to print using this printer, Wi - Fi, easily, since the purchase and installation on 28/08/16. No problem. In addition, using the * Apple * settings, by selecting 'Printers and Scanners' and going through the routine of "Scan", I can acquire a successful analysis (placed in "jpg" format in the 'Images' folder).

  I'm so concerned - very disappointed - as to why I can't activate and use the "Scan to computer" utility from HP. It does not work from the laptop computer side or from the printer control panel.

  If you have HP scanning or a previous version of HP Easy Scan in the Applications folder or HP subfolder, delete it by moving it to the trash, and then empty the trash.
  
  Install the latest HP Easy Scan below, it will be installed in the Applications folder:

  If you experience additional problems, ensure that the latest version of the software is installed by following HP Easy Start below:
