We clicked on "Compact messages" in Outlook Express and 6 months of messages disappeared! Any ideas as to the why, where they could be, and how they can be recovered?

We watched in 'Deleted items' and they weren't there.  We also "restored" the bin "recycling" and even did not see them return.

Hi James,

Thanks for posting. Please, try the following.

  • Make sure that Outlook Express is not working.
  • Open the Recycle Bin on your Windows desktop .
  • Locate the files ".bak" corresponding to Outlook Express folders that you want to retrieve.
    • The '.bak' file will be named as the folder in Outlook Express.
    • To restore a folder called "Archive", look for "Archive.bak", for example.
  • Click on the file '.bak' with the right button of the mouse.
  • Select restore from the menu.
  • Locate the file in Windows Explorer and open the folder that contains.
  • Drag and drop the file ".dbx" corresponding to the Outlook Express folder, you want to get back to your Office .
  • In the Outlook Express store folder, click the '.bak' file to be retrieved using the right button of the mouse.
  • Select Rename from the menu.
  • Change the file extension ".bak" in ".dbx".
    • If the file was called "Archive.bak", for example, make sure that it is named "Archive.dbx" now.
  • Open Outlook Express.
  • If your emails have been recovered, remove the ".dbx" file you moved to the desktop .

Also, if you cannot find the files in the above location search your computer *. Bak

I hope this helps!

Compacted Outlook Express and save some of my emails.  Now, I need access to the following, but can not open them.  How to reopen these emails?

    Hi Redtiger1705,

Lost emails immediately after compact preforming?
If so, Outlook Express creates BAK files before compaction. They are copied there as a precaution, in case something goes wrong with the compaction. The following steps should help those rear:

    1) open Outlook Express and go to tools, Options, maintenance, store folder. Copy the entire path to the storage folder, and then click OK.  Close Outlook Express.

    (2) go to the basket and search for all files with the .bak extension.  Restore the most recent .bak files. That he will put in the OE store folder, but still like a BAK file.

    (3) click on start, run and paste the path that you copied in step 1 in the run box, and then press ENTER.

    4) click Tools, Folder Options. In the Folder Options window, click the view tab.
    (5) less advanced, uncheck the "Hide extensions for known file types".
    (6) you should see the two sent a Sent Items.dbx from the file as well as the Items.bak. Rename the Sent Items.DBX to Sentold.dbx and Rename Items.Bak sent to Sent Items.DBX. When you open OE, your messages sent items must be restored.
Please let me know if I can be of further assistance!

  • I'm using Outlook Express and from time to time, the box "leave a copy of messages on the server" becomes disabled automatically.

Hi, Im using Outlook Express and from time to time, box "leave a copy of messages on the server" becomes disabled automatically.

Ive checked the Task Manager, its not running after close Outlook.

    Appreciate your comments.

This can be dependent on ISP or it could just be OE spoil.  I saw this happen at any time.  You can try to backup the message store, and then delete the mail account completely (you will not lose messages).  The file to run. Folder | All compact.  Then close and reopen OE and then add the account back again.  See if things stick after that.

You did not indicate EO to leave a copy of messages on the server, so when he downloaded from the server, they have been removed from it.  Go to tools | Accounts | Mail | Properties | Advanced and check the box leave a copy on the server for the future.

Connected to Outlook Express and all my existing e-mails have disappeared.  Only those today showed.  I tried using the search of .eml files and get no results.  Can anyone help with location on the hard drive the .eml files?  Thank you.

You won't find files for Outlook Express .eml. They are stored in the format of data in the form of .dbx files.

Two reasons the most common for what you describe is disruption of the compacting process, (never touch anything until it's finished), or bloated folders. More about that below.

Why OE insists on compacting folders when I close it? :

    Why mail disappears:

    About file Corruption:
    http://www.Microsoft.com/Windows/IE/community/columns/filecorruption.mspx

    Recovery methods:

If you use XP/SP2 or SP3, and are fully patched, then you should have a backup of your dbx files in the Recycle Bin (or possibly the message store), copied as bak files.

To restore a folder bak on the message store folder, first find the location of the message store.

Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store folder will reveal the location of your Outlook Express files. Note the location and navigate on it in Explorer Windows or, copy and paste in start | Run.

In Windows XP, the .dbx files are by default marked as hidden. To view these files in the Solution Explorer, you must enable Show hidden files and folders under start | Control Panel | Folder options | View.

Close OE and in Windows Explorer, click on the dbx to the file missing or empty file, then drag it to the desktop. It can be deleted later once you have successfully restored the bak file. Minimize the message store.

Open OE and, if the folder is missing, create a folder with the * exact * same name as the bak file you want to restore but without the .bak. For example: If the file is Saved.bak, the new folder should be named saved. Open the new folder, and then close OE. If the folder is there, but just empty, continue to the next step.

First of all, check if there is a bak file already in the message. If there is, and you have removed the dbx file, go ahead and rename it in dbx.

If it is not already in the message, open the trash and do a right-click on the file bak for the folder in question and click on restore. Open the message store up and replace the .bak by .dbx file extension. Close the message store and open OE. Messages must be in the folder.

If messages are restored successfully, you can go ahead and delete the old dbx file that you moved to the desktop.

If you have not then bak copies of your dbx files in the Recycle Bin:

DBXpress run in extract disc Mode is the best chance to recover messages:
    http://www.oehelp.com/DBXpress/default.aspx

    And see:
    http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#4

A general warning to help avoid this in the future:

Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They finally are damaged. Create your own folders defined by the user for mail storage and move your mail to them. Empty the deleted items folder regularly. Keep user created folders under 300 MB, and also empty as is possible to default folders.

Disable analysis in your e-mail anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer of protection that devours the CPUs, slows down sending and receiving and causes a multitude of problems such as time-outs, account setting changes and has even been responsible for the loss of messages. Your up-to-date A / V program will continue to protect you sufficiently. For more information, see:

    Please help it is urgent.
    Thanks in advance.
    Kind regards
    Vaibhav

Follow these steps only if no one else is using this Outlook Express identity.

1: in OE: tools | Accounts | Delete the account.

2: delete all messages in the OE files and empty the deleted items folder.

3: remove all the dbx files in the message of store with OE closed. When it is open, new, and create empty dbx files.

Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store folder will reveal the location of your Outlook Express files. Note the location and navigate on it in Explorer Windows or, copy and paste in start | Run.

In Windows XP, the files of user OE (DBX and WAB) are by default marked as hidden. To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must enable Show hidden files and folders under start | Control Panel | Folder Options icon | Opinion, or in Windows Explorer. Tools | Folder options | View.

Close OE store folder and open Outlook Express. Select all the dbx files and delete them.

  • With the help of old Windows CD to install the optional component deleted Outlook Express and I need to get it back!

We have received a Windows XP laptop from a friend and use Outlook Express for e-mail. We had a number of other things such as pilots with the laptop but not the Windows CD.  Then we wanted to reduce the size of a jpg image and I wanted to use MS Photo Editor to do what I then read on the Microsoft site that I could get by installing from any Windows CD.  Therefore, I used an old Windows XP CD from another PC, choose to install an optional component and chose as accessories to the next screen, ensure that all other options were struck down, assuming that so they would simply not be installed.  One of them was Outlook Express and Internet Explorer.  Instead of THIS the wizard DELETED Outlook Express and Internet Explorer.  When I tried to get him back by checking these options, asked me for the 2nd day of the original installation CD - which of course, I did not!  I have managed to re - download IE8 from Microsoft Download site, but of course do that for Outlook Express - and we don't have Office on this computer: (.)  Help!  (a) is it possible to reverse this process to remove/uninstall Outlook Express? (b) we now lost all our emails? (c) I already tried to go back to a previous good configuration, but that has not worked.

Thank you in advance for advice, answers or help.

First, make sure that OE has actually disappeared.  Go to start | Run and paste this and see if OE starts:

    "c:\program files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe".

Including the quotes and see if OE starts.  Very often "withdrawal" OE removes just the shortcut to it.

If this does not work, you can try reinstalling XP SP3 (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/help/learn-how-to-install-windows-xp-service-pack-3-sp3), but you should probably uninstall IE8 first and then reinstall it later.

You can also go to the c:\windows\inf directory and locate the msoe5.inf file and right-click on it and choose Install and see if that fixes things.

    See if that works.

It looks like a new OE has been created? File | Identities. Y at - it a list?

If this is not the case, look for your message store folder. While following the path, when you get to the identities, see if there is a second appearing, and if this identity has for folders dbx files you are missing.

  • set up outlook express and change the ip address on windows xp

I would like to set up outlook express and to change my ip address on windows xp home

Outlook Express is built into Windows XP.  To run it, click Start > all programs > Outlook Express .  To configure an e-mail account, click Tools > accounts > Add > Mail .

    To change your IP address:

    1. go in Control Panel > Classic view > network connections .
2 right click on your network connection.
    3. click on Properties .
    4. double-click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) .

However, you probably cannot change your IP address if it is assigned by your Internet service provider.  How to get your computer IP address, and why would you change?

Yes, you will need to reinstall Office 2000. When you installed Office 2010 trial, he removed Office 2000. Once you get the cd, reinstall Office and should be back up and running.

I can't offer any assistance with address number address Outlook Express however.
