Welcome to the upgrade to ESXi 4.0 to 4.1 and 4.6 of view

Hello everyone, I have a question regarding the upgrade of my esxi hosts that are running a cluster View 4.6.

Overview of my environment:

The current 4 ESXi hosts run 4.0.0 261974.  These hosts are UCS B200 M2 blade.

I need to add a 5th host for abilities and bought a new UCS B200 M3 blade.  The M3 blade only supports ESXi 4.1 U2 or more so I can't install the same version running on my 4 current hosts.

My question is, what would be the best practice to get the blade M3 installed and in my environment?

Should I install the 4.1 u2 on the M3 blade and attach it to the cluster with the 4 hosts running 4.0, and then you spend the remaining 4.0 hosts one at a time?

or

Can I upgrade the 4 hosts first run 4.0 to 4.1 u2 or u3 and then install and join the M3 host?

In addition, please include any documentation useful update, or links to, that would be great!

Thank you!

You consider right. Do an upgrade at a time. 4.0 and 4.1 also can coexist without problem, but the ideal is to upgrade.

Good luck with that.

  • the upgrade to esxi 4.1 to 5.1 and moving hosts to 5.1 VC

We always have a lot of guests esxi 4.1 running in VC 4.1

the plan is to move these hosts to 5.1 (already built) VC and upgrade hosts with her

    That I should

    a. take a host in vc 4.1, in maintenance mode,

    b. update, patch. etc...

out of the maintenance of the c mode.

    d. move vms back on

host e is disconnected. the cluster

    f. remove a host cluster and vc4.1

    g. connect host to new cluster in vc5.1

    thoughts?

You have a perfect plan. But you need to make changes in the order steps

    The correct order would be:

    disconnect the cluster host

remove the cluster host and vc4.1

connect the host to the new cluster in vc5.1

Take the host in vc 5.1, in maintenance mode,

    Update, patch. etc...

    exit maintenance mode

    move virtual machines on it

You can manage guests 4.1 to 5.1 VC. If all the guests move there first and then upgrade one at a time

  • The upgrade to ESXi 4.1 with storage iSCSI software to ESXi 5.5

I intend to upgrade ESXi 4.1 with which I have attached to ESXi 5.5 iSCSI software storage

I've updated all my guests who were on the SAN storage with no problems.

I would like to know that if it there's nothing I should take care before I update the host connected iSCSI to ESXi 5.5, as for the hosts with SAN attached storage I made to remove the cables of SAN before upgrading the host.

Also, if all known problems, you will be informed during the upgrade to ESXi 4.1 to ESXi 5.5 with iSCSI Software storage, please let me know?

If there is no different process to upgrade coz in ESXi 4.1 I do not see this link ports of iSCSI vmkernel ports software iSCSI but I know in ESXi5.5 we have to or I just launch a procedure of standard upgrade via the Update Manager and everything will be taken care?

    Thanks in advance

With ESXi prior to version 5, linking ports had to be done via command line. However, if it has been configured correctly, you should be able to upgrade to ESXi 5.5 (assuming that the host has not been previously updated since version 3). BTW. the last time that I disconnected the host of storage for an upgrade has been with ESX 3.0.

  • After the upgrade of Camera Raw 9.1 all cases and objectives profiles have disappeared.  How to make a comeback?

After the upgrade of Camera Raw 9.1 all cases and objectives profiles have disappeared.  How to make a comeback?  My camera and lens where in there before and worked fine.

You can see a screenshot of the area of optical Correction to ACR, the list of the brand expanded?

The ACR and DNG Converter store their profiles in the same folder.  If you have recently uninstalled the DNG Converter, maybe he deleted all of the profiles?  You could put them back by reinstalling the DNG Converter 9.1, which is available on the Adobe updates page:

  • The upgrade to ESXi 4.1 to 6.0

We have a PowerEdge T300 server that is about 6 years old. It is running the free version of ESXi 4.1 out of a 4 GB flash drive that plugs directly on the motherboard. Virtual machines are stored on a RAID array (storage directly associated with).

Is it possible to go from 4.1 to 6.0 or will I need to do a fresh install of 6.0 on my USB key? If I install 6.0 it will automatically recognize my repository of storage on DAS (RAID 5 array).

In addition, 6.0 works even on this old of a server or should I be looking at something like 5.0?

    Thank you

    You have two problems:

1: your hardware is not compatible with vSphere 6, according the latest version supported with VMware HCL is the vSphere, ESXi 5.1 U3:

2nd: impossible to update directly from version 4.1 to version 6, take a look here on the upgrade: VMware product interoperability Matrices

  • the upgrade to esxi 4.1 and 5.1

    Hello

I'll be in place upgrade of a host of 4.1 to 5.1 group

I intend to use using kickstart

    updated - firstdisk = local

I think the installation is on local disks, but there a lot of LUN fc attached

question is going to be be sure to use

updated - firstdisk = local and this installation script?

should I disconnect all the fc LUNS before installing?

We do not want to make too many san team

    Thank you

Since I am the SAN guys too... I always unplug the network storage ESXi when you perform an upgrade because this speed up installation and reduce to the minimum the risk of selecting a wrong option.

But William posted some present ideas here: http://www.virtuallyghetto.com/2012/04/disable-lun-during-esxi-installation.html

  • The upgrade to ESXi host that hosts vCenter comments

Recently, we moved our vCenter Server in a virtual machine rather than running on a dedicated machine.

A question I have for those running in this type of configuration are how do you for the upgrade of the host as comments from vCenter runs (for example ESXi 5.0 > 5.1)? We usually use Update Manager to perform the upgrade, so I was wondering if there is just more to use the old method of mode start since the level of the server installation CD or if there is another special way Im unaware of.

    Thanks in advance!

If you have shared storage, you can connect to the host where you vCenter VM is registered, it off, remove the inventory, disconnect from the host, log in another host, browse the data store, add the vCenter VM inventory on the other host, turn on the vCenter VM and then you can remidate the other host using the virtual machine.

  • With the help of vicfg-cfgbackup during the upgrade to ESXi

    Hi all

We are working on the upgrade to ESX 4.1 to 5.1 ESXi.  We do this in a scalable fashion.  Take us a host ESX 4.1 since the cluster, rebuild it from scratch with ESXi 5.1 and then place it in a cluster.  Is it possible or advisable to back up the configuration of ESX 4.1 with vicfg-cfgbackup and then restore this configuration it is upgraded to 5.1 ESXi?  We do not have Enterprise Plus license so profiles host is not an option (or at least that's my understanding).

Thanks for your help and advice!

I don't know that there is an 'official' answer on that, but check out http://communities.vmware.com/thread/392759 for more information.

  • Question about the upgrade to ESXi 4.1 and USB keys

Right now I'm under ESXi 4.1 from a USB key (ie. a very small USB key).

If I want to "start over" and use a newer USB for ESXi 5 but keep my intact, is guest operating systems - this possible?  (For example, if I install ESXi on a Virgin USB 5.0, will I be able to import my existing operating system vmx ESXi 4.1 images, etc.?)

In addition, what's the downside of ESXi 5 running from a USB?  I spin this in a laboratory at the House and have read that ESXi basically load into memory if you really start player ESXi itself is useless and a USB key is perfectly fine.  Is this true?

If you do not want re - configure ESXi 5.0, you can proceed as follows:

    1. Use free software, called "USB Image Tool 1.57" make a picture of your USB 4.1 - software available here http://www.alexpage.de/usb-image-tool/ .  This way you can restore it to any USB in the future.
    2. After making a backup of your USB 4.1 image, upgrade installation 4.1 to 5.0.
    3. Make a backup of your configuration of ESXi using the CLI vMA tool / vSphere in Windows with the following command: vicfg-cfgbackup-next - server
    4. The new installation of ESXi 5.0 on new USB
    5. VMA or vSphere CLI tool use in Windows with the following command to restore the backup from step 3 config: vicfg-cfgbackup-load - server
    6. You should now have ESXi 5.0 works on a new USB without any necessary configuration

Alternatively, you can restore the image USB created in step 1 on your old USB in order to have a 4.1 installation handy...

I recommend that make you a picture of your USB 5.0 USB as well just in case in the future USB fails.

  • The upgrade to ESXi 3.5

I have an ESXi 3.5.0 Server and I am considering upgrading to VMware vSphere Hypervisor 4.1.

    -Is the good upgrade?

-I can upgerade in place, leaving the VM on the server?

Is there a document describing how to upgrade right?

-As some of the VMS are business critical, how to eliminate or mitigate the risks of problems prossible during the upgrade process?

    Concerning

    Mario

You can follow the upgrade guide:

    http://www.VMware.com/PDF/vSphere4/R41/vsp_41_upgrade_guide.PDF

You can keep existing VMs, but a backup is suggested.

A suggested path could be the first upgrade to 4.0 and 4.1:

  • The upgrade to ESXi 4.0.261974 to ESXi 4.1.0 errors with "upgrade package validation failed"

    Hello

I'm trying to upgrade a host 4, 0.x ESXi 4.1 using the vSphere host update utility WSXi. First, it downloads the patches as expected, I select the host, and select "Upgrade of home", and then I select the file "upgrade - ESXi4.0 - to-ESXi4.1.xxxxxx.zip" I downloaded. After a while, I get the message "upgrade package validation failure (not to read the metadata of upgrade file that is located in a folder temporary users where it was unzipped to)" and the update will fail. I tried with the client installed on an XP and a box of Windows 7 with the same question, and I tried a new download without any positive result. What I am doing wrong?

    Thanks for your help.

    See if that helps

  • The upgrade to ESXi 3.5 Update 2 to update 4

    Hello

I currently update 2 on a server and was wondering can I go directly to the update 4.

Or should I first upgraded to update then update 3 to 4?

    Thank you

    Welcome to the forums,

You can go directly to U4! Keep in mind that when you perform an update via CD, it is advisable to remove the SAN connection before making the upgrade...

  • How to maintain the availability of the data store after the upgrade to ESXi 5.1 with the new IP address and the naming convention?

How can we maintain access to the presented LUNS and VMFS data store after we improve the ESX in ESXi with the new naming convention and the new model of IP addressing?

My back-end SAN EMC Clariion is VNX

    Thanks in advance.

How are the hosts connected to storage systems. With FC HBA for example, there is basically nothing you need to do since the WWN will remain the same and so LUN presentation of the zoning on the switch and storage system does not need to be reconfigured.

If you have access to the material, you can fiber optic cables.  We do not usually have on the correction just because you're not the formatting of the readers as you would for and install.  However, it won't hurt anything to pull the cables if you can.
