What does uninstall a program actually do?

Obviously, it removes the program folder and its content, and I believe that it also clears the values of registry created by the program, but other than that, what is the uninstall of a program do? I understand programs may come with their own uninstall programs, but what are some of the key points for a typical uninstallation?

Drew

In my view, it also erases the registry created by the program values

What needs to happen, but not all programs uninstall cleanly remove all registry entries. However, the registry entries left rarely slow down the system, they simply leave evil kept references to the program that you see from time to time. What you should NOT do is use an automatic registry cleaner to remove the registry entries. When you do this you will immediately introduce in your system a real risk to damage your system and create errors which cannot be solved by reinstalling Windows.

There is only a point uninstall key.  Select Start, Control Panel, programs and features, place the cursor on the program to delete, right click and select uninstall. Restart your computer.

In the case of anti-virus software, you can uninstall the same way, but it may be better to use a removal tool. You must always remove the existing anti-virus software before installing a replacement. Do not follow this procedure may lead to the current software damaging software being installed.

Some users rely Revo Uninstaller to remove the software. According to them, only the resulting cleaner absorption. I've never been inclined to use Revo.

I have an old system with Windows 98 on it.  I get an "error loading program.exe. -You must reinstall Windows' message every time I try to sign.  I don't have the original disc. How can I fix?

    Hello Michielle,

To answer your question, program.exe loading error means that the program is not installed on your system.
Andrew is correct, that the support for Windows 98 was arrested in 2006.

Since Windows 98, we have 4 new operating system commercialized by Microsoft. Most of the new computers would not yet go Windows 98 as there are no available drivers for the new hardware.

It would be better to upgrade.

  • When you try to install my new Embird program I get the message "this link must be opened with an application, select application. What does that mean?

Help, I hope that I've not messed up, too bad!

Help, I have a small embroidery business and have used a program called Embird.  Yesterday, I downloaded an upgrade for this program. It said to uninstall the old program before installing the new, so I did.  Now when I try to install the new one it says this link must be opened with an application, select application.  I have no idea what it means that someone can help me?  I tried to restore the computer to a date prior to just start all over hoping he would restore the old Embird, it says that the file may be damaged and will not work.

If you were able to 'merge', you have unzipped the file somehow.  What was all the messages when you did the merger?

    Follow these steps:

1 information about the particular file in question

Right-click on the downloaded file, and select Properties.  What does say for 'File Type' and what is the 3-letter file extension (after the point)?

If there is no file extension, find the file using Windows Explorer, and then click Tools > Folder Options > view.  Uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types" and click OK.  Now, look at the file again for the file extension.

    2. test of exe files

Click Start > run, then type notepad in the "open" box, then click OK
Didn't open a Notepad window?  If not, what error message do you have?

Click Start > run, and then type the following in the "Open" box and click OK
    %SystemRoot%\system32\
Find notepad.exe (or just Notepad if file extensions are not displayed), and then double-click it.  What is going on?

I can still print from this computer, but cannot access the HP Director (a function to scan, print, clean & align print head, etc.), which is what started this process of trying to uninstall/reinstall the program.

Windows XP Pro w/SP-3 (version 2002)

    Of photo TakerYN...

This message can be considered "solved!" I was finally able to remove the program with the HP disk. I tried to reinstall (overwrite) the program, but I received a message that the installer has detected that the program is already installed. I wanted to try it manually, so I 'opened' the disc, you click on "setup" and received the same message. At this point, I was ready to try anything and noticed the "Launcher" icon and thought, what the heck, can't hurt to try at this stage, so I clicked it. I wasn't expecting the screen, I had, who said that it would be to uninstall the program. I thought it was too good to be true and easy way (after all), but after that it's over, I checked my Add/Remove programs and my 'problem' program was gone.

Thought I would post this so anyone who might encounter the same problem can try this.
