What happens if I delete the folder "windows.old"?

I upgraded my windows Vista. Now on the local drive, I can see a "windows.old" folder that does not use a lot of space. What happens if I delete this file?

Hi Alexandre Reddy.

The files that were used in your previous version windows are stored in the theWindows.old folder. Remove the Windows.old folder will not cause any problem you have taken a backup of the previous files as well as all the important files.

See the article mentioned below and follow the steps to remove the folder.

  • Deleting the folder Windows.old in Windows 7 to 8 afterupgrading

I've recently upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 8 and then again to 8.1. A copy of my old windows has been kept on the C drive as old windows, then again in the form of old windows 001. When I tried to delete the first, I made a mistake and changed the permissions of the user: Pauls PC in the folder 'properties '. But then I made a mistake again when I got bored with waiting so that he finishes and you press "Cancel". Yet once, I stuffed up - when I was warned by the pop-up that I can cause some serious trouble if I do not change the permissions back immediately, I ignored it, and now I have 15 GB hard drive that I can't access. The other windows 001 old that I got rid of listening on online forums and creating an administrator account. Can you help me with advice, or I always this hard disk space?

The built-in system cleaning app allows to safely remove the files, rather than delete directly from the file Explorer.  Here's how:

    1. Press +R to display the run box, type cleanmgr and click OK
    2. Select all types of cleanups to perform, and then click OK to clean the drive.  If you care only cleaning of the update, go to step 4 instead.
    3. When you are finished, press on +R to display the run box, type cleanmgr and click OK once more.
    4. This time, choose "clean up system files" at the bottom of the box first and then recheck all types of cleaning.  He is one who will have the opportunity to "Cleaning Windows Update". The first pass (step 2 above) won't do.

  • Is it possible to recover files deleted from your Recycle Bin, after the failure of the computer after the backup hard drive contained in the folder windows.old, including system files?

Very well. My computer is messed up awhile back and my friend saved my whole hard drive, the files system and everything, then wiped and restored, then ALL put in a folder called "windows.old" that I can access my hard drive. So since he has saved the files system and everything, I'll be able to recover my old files I had deleted before it was erased, if (hopefully) they is not replaced? If so, what filepath can I go in?

    Hi thatonehxckid,

The content in the trash is not saved in the folder windows.old during a custom installation.

  • Gateway DX4300 - how to restore the drivers to the folder window.old.

Hi, I just reformatted my PC. lost all my drivers and ask you how to restore the drivers to the folder window.old. My PC is a gateway dx4300 built in maps Ethernet and video. Unfortunately the gateway doesn't have these drivers.__Thanks.

Oh, how it would help if truly comprehensive published Gateway of material form for a machine... :(

I only am not surprised you found the driver for the modem didn't work - the only one I found was a Vista driver in proportion; Server 2 k 8 x 64 probably don't like that too much.  ;)
But, a little research on Google (and, looking at the list of Vista drivers for this machine) does not give something useful: your card network (the thing you need more) seems to be a Marvell Yukon 88E8075 (possibly 88E8071) Gigabit NIC.  These drivers are available directly from Marvell: http://www.marvell.com/support.html
Just select "88E8075" in the menu dropdown part number, then take the package Windows Server 2008 SP2 (x 64).  Install it, get the machine online, run Windows Update.  I am betting that WU will be able, at a minimum, give you work pilots 'real' (rather than the generic or non-existent drivers you have) so that you can sort.
Honestly, I'm surprised that there is no drivers for this NETWORK adapter - it's a fairly common piece.

  • What happens if I delete the files in the Temp folder in Windows 7?

What is happening in the windows--> Temp folder in windows 7, and if I delete the files there, that will be a problem?  I want to free up the disk space of 1.8 G, but can't find any info anywhere of the consequences of deleting these files, what they are for, or how they got there.  Thank you!

In general, it is safe to delete anything in the Temp folder.  Sometimes, you can get a "Cannot be deleted because the file is in use" message, but you can just ignore these files.

For safety, do your Temp directory deletion right after you restart the computer.  Sometimes a program installer will put something in the Temp directory it needs to complete the installation after a reboot.  If you restart and wait a bit so that they were, whatever left in the Temp folder should be OK to delete it.

If you want to be conservative, use the built-in Disk Cleanup tool (type of cleaning disc in the search box).  If you select "Temporary files" as one of the elements to clean (deleted), by default, that Disk Cleanup removes only the files that have not changed in 7 days.

  • What happens if I delete the contents of the my SubscriptionPlayCache folder in iTunes?

    Hello world

I'm on a MacBook Pro (El Capitan 10.11.2, 2.4 GHz/4 GB), with 121 GB of Flash storage and I'm running out of hard drive space.

I got a new time Capsule recently and more backups were transfer files to this (pictures, videos, etc.), but I just noticed the iTunes cache - specifically "SubscriptionPlayCache" has 9.1 GB of data in it. I regularly listen to music while I work, then, of course, that this has been over time.

Will be the rumble of coming world down if I delete the contents of this file, leaving the folder itself in place (to begin its inexorable March upward the Hill of filling of storage)?

    Thank you!

Music files Apple cache: http://dougscripts.com/itunes/2015/09/new-flush-apple-music-cache-files/ - ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.iTunes/SubscriptionPlayCache/ file, which is a bit like a "iTunes Media" folder for music from Apple

You might find yourself with a bunch of broken links in iTunes for tracks pointing to these files. You could always delete those that many find that painful and unsightly to have them even.

  • Can I format my C drive without deleting the folder "Windows"?

I tried to delete the files on my computer - sound which do not appear in "Programs and features", but I keep are denied access and everytime I have to go through the Security tab and change the permissions and sometimes THAT doesn't even help. I'm exhausted on space, and I'm also looking for a "clean start" If you catch my drift.

Could not delete everything on my C drive without deleting the Windows folder, including hidden user accounts and folders/directories?

    Hello

No, it is not possible to format your hard drive with a folder that is not included, a format is still a clean hard disk.

Also delete user hidden folders and more will make your corrupt Windows installation and it will no more work or it will be very unstable.

If you want to perform a clean boot, then the best idea is pure install Windows 7, you can do it from your Windows installation media and then formatting your hard drive, Windows will then reinstalled on it.

  • What happens when you disable the service "Windows Error Reporting Service" in order to avoid an annoying and misleading popup error message?

I kept getting annoying "authentication failure.  Please check your user name and password of the account '... xyz. "" error every 30 seconds. "

I tried to restore my system and antivirus running - even to reinstall my anti-virus.  I deleted the accounts in question and kept still getting the error message.  Note, receive emails has never been a problem.

I finally disabled the element of the system of "Windows Error Reporting Service" MS configuration and now the error pop ups have disappeared.  Is it correct to keep this function disabled?

    Thank you.

To check the event logs, go to start / Control Panel / administrative tools / event handler.

To achieve the reliability and performance monitor, go to start / search and type in reliability, and then double-click the program icon that appears.

I hope this helps.  You can always check these sites periodically and do not need WER to warn you of a problem (even if it is perhaps faster) - you can check manually.  WER serves a purpose and he gives notification of a problem (which is good), but not in the circumstances that you knew.  This is a "nice to have" feature - not absolutely necessary.  We can try testing again to see if we can find the problem with WER if you're at it - or you can simply leave it off and make periodic checks of manual (decision is yours).

    I hope this helps.

    Good luck!
