  Based on these latest incarnations of Windows Live e-mail it's probably a scam. If you read the email carefully, you probably will find that English is not as good as it should consider that it is supposed to come from a multinational company like Microsoft.

  In the past few days I've gotten two calls from Indian, with names like Jeremy, who claim to be 'Windows' and informing me in a first step, as in many similar messages, that my computer had somehow contacted and all sorts of 'problems' that they would fix it by going into my computer.  Management to a guy, I opened the event viewer which is fukll of a large number of beautiful incrutable "events".  I quickly realized that it was all a fraud, beginning with the question of why Microsoft would call me in the first place.  Today, the scam is even funnier!  An Indian lady whose English approached the indecipherable called for my deceased father-in-law for a long time to report the "usual" problems with his computer.  I giggled a little and her press for more details.  She herself identified as the Manager of sales Windows (LOL) and referred me to "Jeremy," an Indian with notably better English with "Microsoft" office is supposed to be at 1290 Avenue of the Americas.  I mentioned that myi called ID showed area code of the caller like "123", which is not a NY area code.  "Oh, no problem," he said, "we called usuing an internet Dialer!

  "Let me get this straight," I have it says, "you called my father-in-law because its compuyter have reported problems, but instead of picking up the phone and call to him, you used an internet dialer?"  I could not follow the answer.  I did not mention that my late father-in-law never had a computer.  But I said dad would be computer had not been rturned on recently.  Well, Jeremy replied, it is 'one of the computers in your House.'  I was directed to www.alpemix.com and asked to click on 'download '.  I asked far too many questions, like how people who thought Microsoft Web site was actually a company (Teknopars) based in Istanbul.  It seems that Teknopars is inivolved is a kind of service that allows people to take over the computers for technical support or assistance.  Soon the original Indian girl was back on others.  Finally, she said that I was wasting his time.  The first time I got one of these calls, I was referred to another site, but I don't remember the name.

  I don't know exactly what the purpose of the scam really was - or should I say, is.  Is - it actually programmed my computer for malicious purposes, for example, to get the bank account and other sensitive information?  Or is it an elaborate hoax wanted to sell a useless software intended to solve a problem that these guys there fake by changing the way the computer things poster so that you think that is really a problem.

  This forum is filled with similar reports.  Unfortunately, I see no similar reference to this or other scams on the windows support page.  Maybe it's buried somewhere.
