What is the best solution when my external drive for Time Machine is full?

Hello

I use the latest version of Mac OS X on my iMac 27 ". I use a drive outside of 3 TB G-Tech for Time Machine backup. Due to my recently many RAW photo images, I have less 8% left storage on my external hard drive, so I'm trying to figure out next steps in what concerns the strategy of external storage and have the following questions:

  • When my external drive for Time Machine is full, it is my understanding that older backups on external hard drive will be deleted to make room for newer backups. If the oldest backups contained pictures (whose records have not changed since the time they are initially stored), then I guess that these photos will be removed from the external drive - correct?
  • If I had to replace my external drive for Time Machine with a new external drive which is as big or bigger than the one it replaces, what should I expect on the size of the initial backup on the new drive? I guess the size of the backup would be exactly equal to the current amount of storage used on my drive hard iMac - correct?
  • Would it not be possible to connect the external drive for Time Machine existing at a new Time Machine external drive so that when the original disk is full, the overflow will be automatically stored on the new external hard drive for Time Machine? (If feasible, it seems that this strategy would maximize my external storage capacity vs just replace external drives.)

I realize that my first two questions are rather basic, but I don't want to make any false assumptions. The third idea is intriguing and I would like to know if this is a viable option.

Thank you

Brian

older files are starting to get deleted because the disk fills up then Yes, they went

the backup drive should ideally be 4 times the capacity of your current drive, twice is good but has its limits. Also factor in what you store: a jpeg from the web and a raw photo file are the two images, the size of a is very different. If you work in high-resolution or large native files, or audio files (record pro, no music files) or video production twice the disk fills up very quickly. If you collect photos and JPEG and mp3 files or a handful of videos not so much is necessary.

I would keep the old drive intact if you want to replace and start over with a new drive, if that's the plan. You have the old data, you can keep it somewhere safe and have a redundant backup which you can reconnect at any time to restore from. Let the new index drive itself with new data and take if from there, in the case otherwise you can copy the backup to the new drive and set the drive as the new source of backup but personally I wouldn't copy of the data, that's my preference, it may not be yours and that's fine.

  • Independent external drive for Time Machine backup

Can I save two external hard drives independently in two separate backup drives?

2 TB DHM supported with a 2 to DHM

    and

5 to DHM supported with a to 5 DHM

The 2 TB drive holds the content inventory which changes often but never amounts to more than 300 GB.

5 TB disk holds archived folders which adds, with about 30 GB of data, once a month.

Time Machine is not really suitable for this. The only way I can see it could do would be to an installation to be excluded from the backup disk, then do the backup Time respective Machine. Then return the exclusion so the opposite road is excluded, then backup to the backup Time opposite Machine.

This should be clear would be a completely manual process, in fact you realistic would switch off the Machine in time to avoid that it auto backup on the drive bad between manual backups.

However other backup programs more sophisticated pourrait be configured to do this automatically.

  • I could install a copy of Windows (via Boot Camp) on my external drive for Time Machine without erasing my backups?

I want to use Windows 10 (for games) on my 2013 MacBook Air (13 ", 128GB flash, 1.3 GHz Intel i5, 4 GB of RAM), but I want to install it on my external hard drive because I am almost out of space SSD (34 GB remaining), and I know how large windows is. I have an external 1 TB harddrive that I use for my backups Time Machine, and I was wondering if I could transfer my copy of Windows hard disk external and implemented via Boot Camp. Is there a way to partition my drive so that my backup and Windows can both be there? And is there a way to trick Windows in race (start) from the external hard drive?

Lol as the second partition on the boot volume. None of the other partitions will be allowed thereafter.

  • Cloning of an external drive for Time Machine

If I want to create a clone of my HD bootable, can I use an existing external drive that is used for the TM? Or would I need to create a partition in the drive and the clone to this partition? Or, finally, if you clone a drive with SuperDuper! or CCC or backup Guru they will make the clone bootable for you? TX

    1. Yes, but you must use a separate drive; You can fail at any time.

    2. If you choose to use a single drive (see #1), you need to partition. The backup Time Machine will use eventually all free space on the volume, holding it.

    3 Yes, unless otherwise stated.

  • Restore the data in the external drive using Time Machine

    Hi y ' All!

I store my photos in my external hard drive because there is not enough space in memory is internal. This is actually my second drive external hard than my first (Adata HE720) is not the beginning of last year. Unfortunately, my WD Elements has stopped working and I can't restore data using Time Machine, as the drive is not found in Time Machine under devices, and I'm sure that I restored my photo library and many other files from my old external drive using Time Machine.

Can someone tell me how to recover my old files? I have many other important data here including my photos and I don't want to lose them. I'm fairly positive that Time Machine allows me to get the data as is the point of it.

    Thank you in advance!

P.S. If you guys have any recommendation on a reliable external drive, please do tell me!

Hey guys, I found the problem.

It turns out that I'm never giving time Machine to deselect my external drive to backup; Therefore, there is absolutely no copy done during execution Time machine. I really don't understand why Apple made this the default behavior, but it is what it is.

So, people, don't forget to go to Time Machine preferences and make sure that you remove the external hard drive that you want to backup under options. Once you do, you can enter the time Machine and your drive will appear under devices.

    See you soon.

  • What is the best solution for this idea...

I have a task I'm trying to test and understand what would be the best solution for this, any recommendations would be appreciated.

    Devices at your fingertips:

    -2 ESXi hosts

-1 iSCSI SAN OpenFiler (new just installed the app)

2 ESXi hosts run a small amount of virtual machines that are all in the same domain.  I want to have a file server (or a repository somewhere) that houses a folder with easily accessible software (OS, Office, etc.) on the field.

According to me, that if I made a virtual machine with a large hard drive and share the software, this would not be the best way because it would be dependent on the OS.  Someone has talked about doing a separte VMDK for it and then install it on the operating system on the virtual machine. This way I could always remove the and mount it somewhere else.

It seems a bit weird to me that the software within this "shared folder" will also be sitting on the data store (if I create a virtual machine and need to use the OS/etc).  Not that doubles the space for the same software (in the comments, then the data store)?

What is the best approach to make this action which can be accessed at the prompt (mostly windows) in the field?

What is the best way to stay away the software doubles in action and on the data store?

Please forgive me if I put interpereted your question.

The problem you seem to face is that you must mount the ISOs of VMS software and physical systems that are on the field.

(please, correct me if I'm wrong on this)

If this is the case, then the best way to do would be to create sharing NFS on the openfiler, if you use openfiler to main databases also then he would be better for sharing this was separated to prevent the other help to be able to tamper with the VMDK and VMX files for your virtual machines.

This could then be mounted in ESX to access the ISOs. While being easy to install on Linux and Windows machines to access the ISOs.

If you have questions about NFS mounting in windows, so, this link may help

    http://sagehacks.WordPress.com/2009/01/21/HOWTO-mount-NFS-shares-under-Windows-7

If you are needing to access the VMs software and it is mainly the downloading ISOs then th ISO directly to the data store is possible.

This allows you to use ESX to mount the ISO on the virtual machine.

On the point that the software will use double disk space when you install the software on a machine virtual car will be on the network share and the VMDK virtual machines in the data store. That's right, and that's by design.

Each virtual machine under ESXI is 'independent' (http://www.vmware.com/virtualization/virtual-machine.html)

This means that each virtual computer must have its own copy of the application.

This perspective reflection of each virtual machine as a separate system of 'physical '. They interact with each other as if they were physical systems.

Each VMDK resembles a physical hard disk. Being accessible (in most configurations) 1 VM at a time.

So if you had a set of physical systems connected to a domain and I wanted to install an application on each one, then each would have its own local copy of the application. It's the same thing with virtual machines.

    However

If you configure a set of physical machines so that you run the software from a network share. It is possible to do the same thing using virtual machines using the exactly the same configuration. However, the chiefs more associated to this are important in both cases.

  • What is the best solution of virtual machine to run El Capitan in Mountain Lion?

Looking for the best solution run El Capitan in a mac Mountain Lion. I just need to use El Capitan to run xcode.

There are 3 main reasons that I improve my main system at El Capitan:

1 apps that I always trust that are only optimized to work up until the 10,8

    2. I want the convenience of not having to restart my computer to use 1 program.

    3. don't like projector or the interface of the user interface in general of 10.11

Knowing that, what solution recommend you so I can use El Capitan in the environment of mountain lion.

I know only vmware and parallels. Other options I'm missing? What would you recommend?

    Thank you

I would recommend "don't bother." You don't like El Capitan then why do you want what it? If you know how to partition a disk, then install El Capitan on a new disk partition.

  • What is the best intermediate codec should I use for editing in Premiere Pro CS6

I am a photographer at video edting and unfamiliar with codecs. I work with video Time lapse 1920x1080p generated by Lightroom 4 through LRTimelapse, which uses the H.264 mp4 codec.  My video clip features movements of a camera bump that has stabilized through Warp, but there also slowed a little need to reach a specific length. String and time remapping can be done on the same sequence, so I think I need to export the clip stabilized string in an intermediate file, re - import in to the body and then slow down the clip. I tried MXF OP1a: class AVC-Intra 100 1080. Video re-imported mxf blurs when previewing, but is strong when the clip is stopped.

    1. What is the best intermediate codec for further editing?

    2. is it important what order are stabilizing Warp and time remapping?

3 or is there a better way to stabilize AND slow down a clip?

    System

    iMac 27 i7 2.8 GHz quadruple-heart, Os X 10.8.2

You don't need to export to an intermediate file.

Add timeremapping, right-click on the clip and the nest, and then adds the string.

  • What is the best way to create a bookmark for a user to return?

Hello to all... hello again Steve... I'm back with another question - what is the best way to set up a bookmark system so return users can pick up where they left off in a lesson of AW? I tried the usual internet research, always do, but a few samples and answers I found were AW5, not a lot of help...

I have a dozen or so cards attached to my frame, I would like a user to return to the last card that he read before the close. (My AW communicates very well with database Access, so if passing a variable to access and back to AW when begins the lesson is on track, let me know...) If the answer here is too complicated, perhaps pushing me in the right direction and I'll me dive in.

Thanks in advance to all those who have some tips, I really appreciate it!

    Terry

Try this overview, see if it helps...

Enter a reference to the map as you enter, then save to the database when you exit.

You want something that will give you the equivalent of a page number - if you have 7 cards hung the setting, and the user is in the 6th plan when it stops, you want to save the number 6.

There are dozens of ways to do it, but probably the easiest way is just to attach a calc to each card that has this code

(I do not have Authorwar very convenient to check the syntax, then you should check out!)

    BookMarkPage = ChildIDtoNum (IconParent (IconID), IconID)<-- tells="" authorware="" to="" return="" the="" "page="" number"="" of="" the="" current="">

Save BookMarkPage in your Access database to the exit.

In return, read the bookmark in BookMarkPage, ask the user if he wants to go back to the bookmark. If so, use a calculated navigation that uses

ChildNumToID (@the of your frame name or its ID, BookMarkPage)

Note that you could argue something similar by recording the your card, the IconTitle or IconID but these two can break if never update you your file by adding or removing pages, renaming etc. With this method, all you need is a simple page County check that makes sure you don't try to nav for a page number that does not exist (use IconNumChildren).

I want to add a 2nd raid 0. Hoping for RT more with the 2nd most recent raid without changing the MB or CPU.

Rather than investing in drives of 2 TB, register and upgrade your whole system. A Q9650 is about 6-8 times slower than a fast system and it your main bottleneck using AVCHD.
