What's going on here and how can I solve this problem?

I created a logo with a custom 'C' character and the whole logo became a single compound path.

It looks like this:

Problem is when I apply a graphic style to the track, the C becomes very awkward on me.

It looks like this:

It doesn't seem to matter what graphic style I apply.  I tried several and get the same result every time.  I've isolated the C and makes sure there are no stray points.  I ran on it simplification.  Always get this awkward result.

Can someone explain to me what is happening here and how I can fix this problem?

Here's what the path looks like:

THIS IS HOW I FIXED IT:

Because the document in list 2 Information Panel in the C CMYK objects, I thought I would try to Merge under Pathfinder make one.
Instead, for some reason, what happened was as published Illustrator the compound path in individual trajectories.  From there, I made an another merger and...
As if by magic, the problem disappeared.  I am now able to apply graphic styles to the compound path and everything works as it should.

Still don't know what created the original problem, however.

Thank you guys for the suggestions.
