When I put a CD - R to my hard drive it says "Windows couldn't complete the format".

I have Windows Vista.  The CD - R is a memorex that probably, I bought 6 years ago.  I tried several CD - Rs and get the same answer.  I just want to put the information on the CD, and I don't understand why I'm having this problem.
