When I try to install KB971029 I get the error code 80070490 next

I tried to download separately without success.

Tried to "rehabilitate" using the original installation diskettes - but the 'upgrade' button is grayed out, so it is not possible to get a fix of this way or the other...

Thanks TaurArian for this posting.

I admit, though, it seems that the messages have been written As. Many sentences do not make sence. And it seems that it is copy from many different problems, which results in the same error.

Could I ask you to explain to me about this?

0 X 80070490 - ERROR_NOT_FOUND
Corrupted system file; You will need to perform an upgrade on the spot or reinstalling the operating system.

The error you receive occurs if there is corruption in the manifest of component maintenance base.

your system is unstable and an inplace upgrade or reinstall may be necessary. An inplace upgrade is a repair installation while a relocation means a clean install.

"Explains the SFC / Scannow.

A repair install is the usual solution of SFC/scannow does not work. Not a repair install is not enough if the problem was caused by a virus/malware. Generally a clean installation is required in this case.

This explains an option that may or may not work as "System File Checker". The link above shows you how to make a SFC.

On the other hand if the SFC does not work then you are to repair, install or reinstall.

Note that a repair install is not sufficient if the problems is caused by a virus/malware and a clean install is recommended.
